California is Progressive but Not So on the Presidential Dollars

Presidential Dollars a HUGE HIT in California! I called so many banks in the weeks leading up to the release of these dollars so I could send some in to NGC for grading with the special First Day of Release Designation but NONE of the banks I contacted (and I contacted a lot) had ordered any and most had not even heard about them. One of the banks I do business with said they and ordered some but they would be arriving on the 20th (today) and that's when they got there, today, to late for me

Record time... but mixed results!!

1 upgrade, 1 even, 8 down.... but hey... They are all in NGC slabs now. I recently sent in 10 coins that had already been blabbed by ICG. They are all very nice coins. The only problem for me was that they were in the wrong slab. BTW, I bought them in ICG slabs. Nine of the coins were graded by ICG as MS/PF70 and one was MS69. As mentioned in an earlier post, these were processed in record time and I very much appreciate that level of service. Here are the results. 2001W ASE ICG PF70 NGC

Eye Maid A Miststeak!

Platinum Eagles On 8 February 2007 eye received my NGC MS-70 Platinum Eagle, $10 Early Releases. While enjoying my newest addition, and thinking it will soon be going into a box and black hole. Eye said to myself, self you have maid a miststeak! Eye have EXCELLENT HINDSIGHT, but my FORESIGHT is lacking, poor, not very good, etc; Eye realize that when eye started collecting coins in 2004, from an investment point of view my "pot of gold" should have went into PLATINUM! BUT, Eye'm a COLLE

Wow, I finally get to see what my 20th anniversary eagles look like!

As a wrap to my continuing saga of "Days of our Coins Lives" my 20th eagles (delivered Dec 27) have finally been shipped! Sooner or later they had to grade and ship them. I must admit I'm surprised at the results. I've heard that the proofs were grading lots of 70's, mine were all 69's. On the other hand, I heard the MS70'S were tough to come by. I got 2 out of 3 MS70'S. Better than my PCGS results. all 7 sets were ms69's across the board. Guess I can't complain (except about how long i

Bigger is Not always Better

too large for slabbing Since the start of the signature sets here at Collectors Society my ship-themed coin collecting has gone overboard. I collected coins with ships before the signature sets started but I kept most of them raw and was planning on building some sort of presentation case for them..now I get them slabbed to include in my High Seas Signature Set. Sometimes the cost of slabbing is greater than the value of the coin, but I want it as part of my collection because of its uniquenes

NGC census information

Way behind!!! Why can we not add our coins to the NGC census and save them time (and money) when we recive our coins we could put the numbers in and they would just have to verify it and you would get up to date information.. I am still waiting for some of my Forign coins form well over a year ago to come on. And i cannot tell if my USA ones are on there. WHAT DO YOU THINK ? whats wron

Computer grading coins?

ICGS have 40 feedback, 5 bids, and who knows how many already out there ready to send back. I did a search on item 150089887842 I'm almost for the computer grading idea. They say, when we submit our coins to NGC, they go through three graders. Frankly, I don't see how three people can come to the same grade all the time. How many entries on this board have said they had a great MS65, not a scratch on it, good strike, and it comes back as a MS63 or less? (that's also why I only play poker

PCGS mistake slab - will they ever take it back ?

Wrongly slabbed coin, what to do ? I have in my signature set, a wrongly slabbed coin - Sovereign slabbed by PCGS as 1879 XF45 Worse than that, its slabbed upside down, and even has a ROYAL MINT and British flag colour label in the holder.. Its clearly a M mint coin, worth 230 pounds less if you take Spink 2006 figures (300 pounds less 70 pounds) Should I just give up ? PCGS do not reply to emails. Being in Australia, I figure the best thing to do is sell it to a persistent enough person

Presidential $1 Varieties Up/down

The mint is going to make a killing on these dollars, or I am simply too obsessive... Okay, I picked up a Washington dollar coin, and it looks decent enough. I like teh reverse, although dear George looks a bit grumpy--maybe it's because on mine his face is down for me to read the mottos and date on the edge. This would seem to suggest that there are up/down varieties, that for each date and mint and pres, there is a motto heads up, and a motto tails up. Do we dare collect both, do we petit

computer based coin grading...is it possible?

Just saw an ebay ad for coin grading services. this company looks like they are going to give NGC a run for their money.....ahhhh maybe not! Item number: 150089887842 on ebay is for up to 5 free coin gradings from ICGS not ICG, icgs stands for integrity coin grading service (would be great to find a TPG wih integrity though i doubt they have much of it) the come on is that the coins will be evaluated by a computer program analyzing the coins from a high rez pic and comparing it to a perfect

Not All Bad and A Lot of Work

Madison, WI area had good issues.. NGC will certify I left work at 5:15 pm (2/15/07) to go hunt for a few $1 G.W.'s. The first bank I went to indicated they didn't have the coin, however, a local bank with a vault for sure had them. It was about 5:47 p.m. and the other bank was going to close at 6 pm. Rushing out of the bank, I hastily, and legally, made my way over to the other bank. Realizing I had no cash or direct account access, ran into the ATM, got cash, got back into the car. The

agree with trading slabs...it was the coins

I was all excited, I got some of the Pres's the first day and I'm sending them in..........not have to agree with trading slabs...I was all set to send in at least 20 of the new Pres's for labeling as first day issue...then I got home and looked at em...there was not one that would have made MS-66 and maybe only 1 that would have made MS-65...this is not something that I want in my collection, nor could I in good conscience sell these poor examples to other colletors...so now I wait for the mi

It wasn't the deadline that stopped me!

It was the coins! After looking at 20 rolls of Washington P dollars from the new mint release, and listening to others that had opened another 60 to 70 rolls I came to the conclusion that it was not worth the bother to slab a bunch of weakly struck, banged up coins. I will continue to look for a quality coin, but now I expect to be looking for a much longer time. Having a little blurb on the label that says this coin was a first release, should have meant the best struck and nicest coins the

There is a lot of blame to go around

Ultimately the US Mint is responsible... Ultimately the US Mint is responsible for the quality of coins delivered to the public. The Mint has shown that an interest in encouraging people to collect US coins as well as tp provide the currency for commerce. It seems to me that the Mint did not understand the significance of a premier roll out for the new multicoin Presidential program. Lots of smoke and no fire. I have been bombarded by the US Mint with emails and promotional literature about th
