We dont need the coin police...

We need to educate... Regarding the world of third party graders, we need to educate. We need to educate ourselves first. We need to have as much information (without sensory overload) possible to make our own decisions about TPG's. We should have some experience with TPG's ourself, combined with the experiences of others. Some data on current pricing as related to specific coins and coins graded by specific TPG's. All this and more in order to make our own informed decision. After making t

TPG's I agree with Jackson's view about our hobby. And if I may add my 2 cents worth. I think the ANA should stand up and police our hobby, That is what they were founded for. They can set rules and regulations and set minimum standers for TPG's and if the TPG does not meet the standers they do not get ANA endorsement. Thanks

I try to confine myself also, unless I need to vent. I also agree with Jackson, I really try to be mellow and confine myself to my trials and high points with my Wild West set. But sometimes I do feel the need to speak out on other topics, and I do want to thank everyone for letting us all have our own point of views. In case everyone hasn't noticed, sometimes I read a journal article, feel the need to respond, and then go on to the next article, that's what's happening today. Another pictur

Replying to Silver Dollar's Journal Entry

Re: Sparks & Slabs, and I've had experience with the sports card industy. I must state right up front that my ideas run contrary to what looks like the majority opinion here. I agree with Silver Dollar, as I too am getting tired of people wanting me to practically give them the coin when I'm trying to sell it. It's the same way in the sports card industry now, if a card lists for $20, most "collectors" want to pay maybe $2 or $3. Now I'm all for getting a bargain, but not a steal of a deal

if you think there's any good I usually restrict myself to only using the journal as a place to record my experiences and thoughts as a Numismatist. There are plenty of coin chat boards for discussions on various issues. Having said that-I'm breaking the rules!! The preponderance of self-slabbing by anyone who wants to buy some slabs and a label maker can in no way help the hobby. That few dollars one might get a decent deal on is going to be off-set in the long run by the de-valuation of

re:time for discounts

i for 1 have held off on giving them the extra money to get coins faster. if i(being the buyer)cant get recognized as the most important person in the sales game i figure why keep giving my money to the people not giving me the recognition. i believe that it is not the sales people but the people buying there product that count the most.and when we get a raw coin that we believe should be in there holder we r giving them the popularity they need to continue there sales. where would pcgs and

Re: Whats Wrong

MS69 OR MS70 would be an interesting test I also wonder how accurate the grades are. An interesting test would be to give a grader 20 coins he already graded - half 69's half 70's. have the grader re-grade them and see how much overlap there was. another cool test would be to buy a ms70 from a big tv site customer and send it in raw to be graded again. anyone besides me think the big dogs might get the benefit of the ms 69/70 doubt? I guess i'm just venting because NGC has had my coins

Time for Discounts

It is close to time. It is now close to time that we start talking about discounts. We have the high powered TV shows with their coins being graded at walkthrough speed while the us little guys are paying full price for a 16 day service that now takes 22 days. Out in the real world, during your busy season you increase your staff to accomidate the needs of your customers. I for one do not really care how fast the TV shows coins are graded, as long as it does not make it longer for mine. We

Re: What's Wrong!

Plastic slabs with no quality = Buba's grading service My "mechanical error" was a MS70 Franklin Statesman put into an MS69 Franklin Scientist holder.....and it sat inside "quality control" for a week or 10 days for that??? It cost me shipping and insurance down there and back and back to them again- quality control is the ONLY thing we are paying for (grading is a matter of quality too) and if we don't get that all we have to show for it is a nice plastic holder! Here again, my personal opi

I.K. That's a gimme!

Exhausting.... After some intense research and multitude hours of...alright I checked Ebay and it's supposed to be marked as a dollar, not 50c So now, am I to assume that this will end up on said auction site?

Re: What's Wrong

Yes..A + for whom ever said it is a Dollar For you that guesed, yes it is a Dollar coin and not a 50 cents as the holder stated, NGC made a big Boooo boooo on this one... Will see, I might just keep it around or maybe PCGS will pay lots of money for it to show how competition grade coins... this makes me wonder abouth the rest of coins that I submitted and came back as 69 or should have they been a perfect 70, I am goin to give this a thought....

Re: What's wrong...

Besides the picture being turned on its side and the Statue of Freedom is losing her brains on top of the Capitol Dome.... This coin is a silver dollar, not the 50c that is noted on the holder. I love really old dated coins...this is dated 1507, 500 years old today!! Lets all sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY... sorry, got carried away... Parsippany Coin Show

Nice crowd for a SuperBowl Weekend! As usual, it was shoulder to shoulder at 9AM when I showed up. There were a few "missing" vendors and a few that I had not seen for a month or two. A nice selection of raw and slabbed coins. I had forgotton the bag with the coins I wanted to trade and only had $140 to spend. I spent an hour or two looking at raw 'semi-modern" coins in the hope of finding something I might want to send in for my birthyear mint sets. This was not to be on this trip. I did ho

What's in a Pedigree

2006 First Strike Box 1-20 MS-69 I just acquired a Silver Eagle set from one of those T.V. Networks. I think the set is great don't get me wrong. But I put them in as my Signature set and I was verifing them I noticed that NGC lumped them all in as 2006 Silver Eagle 1st Strike. with a total of over 59,500 coins graded. When I put #1547670-098 thinking there would only be a max. of 500 coins because NGC pedigree it as comming from BOX #1. same thing with BOX#2 ect. ect. ect. all the way to BOX

20th Anniversary Eagle Set

It's a long gestation period! I ordered 10 sets of 20th Anniversary Eagle Sets from the mint back in September. After two consecutive back orders (October and early December), the coins finally arrived at my door 12/24 Christmas Eve. I promply packed the unopened box and sent the 10 sets to NGC for grading 12/27. The box arrived at NGC on 1/5/07 as per their site; however, I have confirmation from the post office via the registered mail reciept that they really arrived on 1/3/07. After 21 bus

Parsipany Coin Show this weekend

Huge monthly coin show I have a few new coin friends, and I will be looking out for special coins that they might be interested in. I do like to trade coins, if you hadn't guessed. My main focus this month will be on my raw buffalo collection. But I will be bringing a couple of PF70 reverse silver proofs and a few other coins to sell. My birthday was the other day and my wedding anniversary is about the same time ( hope I remembered the right day this year ), do ya think my wife would appr

FIRST STRIKES

Another coin. Today I received my newest NGC FIRST STRIKES silver eagle! I know SOME people say so what. Well I'm a COLLECTOR and can't be satisifed with what everyone else has! I think it's great that people are able to focus on one goal at a time, I can't. I have seven complete sets of the Silver Eagles with one being the NGC 20th Anniversary set, one complete PCGS (except the Millenium coin). Working on having a compete set of NGC FIRST STRIKES. Today's coin is a 1999 MS-69, NGC FIRS

HE WHO HESITATES...

of all the times to curb my impulse buying.. OK, I do a lot of impulse coin buying, that is probably why I have dozens of coins that don't fit any particular"set" but they caught my eye at the time. Well this time I should have jumped. I was perusing ebay yesterday, using their advanced search option to check out coins that fill holes in my albums or that elusive 1 I need to finish the main set I'm working on. My buffalo nickel album is just 3 coins shy of completion {criteria is full rims
