Mint to stop selling American Eagles

Check todays Wall Street journal article Losing a Mint: Curb on Coin Sales Angers Collectors U.S. Begins Rationing Popular 'Silver Eagles'; How $1 Fetches $19 By IANTHE JEANNE DUGAN May 23, 2008; Page A1 The government rationed food during World War II and gasoline in the 1970s. Now, it's imposing quotas on another precious commodity: 2008 dollar coins known as silver eagles.   The coins, each containing about an ounce of silver, have become so popular among investors se

COIN COLLECTING JOY

It ain't a sin to make a buck while you have fun is it? You know, I have been collecting coins for 50 years or so and I really love this hobby. I have coins in my collection from the 1800's that were collected and passed down by my grandparents and those are the most prized pieces I own, despite their relative poor condition and some poorly done cleaning done by an inexperienced novice in the '50's (me). That having been said, IF I had been around in 1909, I would have loved to have found a

2008 w Silver Eagle/ reverse of 07

It's Economics and it's that simple! I agree that this coin will end up being that "once in a lifetime" investment opportunity for coin collectors. It will not even compare to the 2006 anniversary sets (which sold out VERY QUICKLY by the way- not two months). The 2008 is a different variety, and if it sees 25000 I would be surprised. This coin will end up being at least 10 times rarer than the 2006 sets, and probably 10 times the value. With the sets, you could always find 15-20 pages of i

2008 w Silver Eagle/ reverse of 07

Why do we let them do this to us! I am personally in the camp who believes that this coin will be a real winner- appreciation wise. My problem is comparing something with this coins mintage to the 2006 W "Blue Lable" which is absolutely no different than a 2006 w anniversary silver eagle, or any of the other 2006 W silver eagles (around 500,000 total mintage)- except for the piece of colored paper inserted into the holder! We get talked into these "first strikes" which are not first strikes,

Just so you know .......

Beware of going back to the well one too many times! I ordered several 2008 W silver eagles from the mint and got lucky with the entire order being the 2008 W with reverse of the 2007. I immediately went back and bought some more from the mint, only to find that all the blue boxes had been previously opened- either by another customer who returned them, or by a mint employee. I think, at this point, that all of the 2008's with the 2007 reverse have been found and that is it! I also wouldn't

2008 W/ rev of 2007

ERROR OR MARKETING PLOY? I just was wondering if there were any thoughts on possibly the mint producing this "error" on purpose? You have to wonder why subtle changes were made to the reverse of this coin anyway- too subtle for even casual notice. The mint has become an expert marketer, knowing exactly what we "get into" and what will get us all excited. I suppose it is a mute point anyway- it is what it is and we can all enjoy the result. I was fortunate in that all of my mint orders came

AN OPEN QUESTION FOR MEMBERS?

Are prices on coins going down the tubes? I've been collecting and selling for over 40 years but I'm new to internet selling/buying. It would appear that prices of coins are taking a hit (-25-30% on Modern issues) as of late and I was wondering if this is a seasonal drop? After reading the previous post where JimL4004 got the deals (or steals) on his Peace Dollars, it would seem that something is going on. Any thoughts on this from some of you more vetern internet sellers?

Re: Gold Buffalo's

Rumor has it! I've actually heard that this may be the last year for the Gold Buffalo, and that the mint may be making this coin in different version, ie, perhaps a knockoff of the Morgan Dollar or perhaps Indian Head cent. Only the mint knows for sure, but what better way to start folks buying than to change them every couple of years!

SGS

Bought lottery tickets lately? I know all of you wanted to know so I found out for you. I purchased 15 SGS MS70 graded coins on Ebay, carefully took them out of their slabs, and submitted to NGC for grading. My thought was, that even if only one of these 1990's Silver Eagles came in at a 70 grade it would be worth it, right? The results are: of 15 coins graded SGS MS70, 10 came back NGC grade of MS69, 4 came back NGC grade MS68, and one came back in a body bag for "improper cleaning".

2007 SAC ERRORS

What in the world is going on at NGC? OK, I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had run across an error on the reverse of 2007 Sac Dollars from the Philladelphia Mint and had sent them off (5) to be graded. I listed them as "errors" with a lengthy discussion about where on the coin to find the "error" (over the "E" in "E Pluribus Unum"). I have two whole rolls of these- and have not found any more- so I know that the error is, in fact, an error. It gets better- today they posted the images and

2007 P Sac Error coins

Anybody Else Finding These? I have a couple of rolls of 2007 P Sac Dollars which I thought would grade out great but upon inspection found what appears to be a "burnished" area right above the "E" in e pluribus unum on the back side of the coins. Upon inspection the mark is a series of concave marks which appear to be faint wing impressions. In addition, some of the coins have a shaddow effect which runs from the lettering to the outside rim of the coin on the back- the fronts are all great.

LIKE LAMBS TO THE SLAUGHTER!

What price pedigree? As coin collectors someone fill me in- a 2006 W MS70 silver eagle trades from anywhere between $285 in the ZF6 mode, about $425 in the black label anniversary mode, and as high as $1000 in the blue label anniversay mode.....these are the exact same coins are they not folks? Someone educate me please, but except for the NGC or PCGS label( a slip of blue/beige/black paper)- which had to be sent to them in sealed boxes (because the grading companies knew THEY couldn't tell t

THANKS NGC!

LISA GETS A PF70 FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! I recently had a couple of problems with some coins which were at NGC for grading. One group seemed to have gotten "lost" in quality control, and the other group got "mishandled" by the recieving department and came back to me with a fingerprint or two. Lisa in customer service got involved and got my coins back to me in really quick order and NGC took care of me on the fingerprint issue. I am very pleased with the professional service she gave me and

PASS ON THE PRESIDENTS!

I think I can find something better to do with $3000! The whole program stinks! I don't like that they eliminated Liberty! I don't like that they relegated "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum" (not to mention mint marks and dates) to the sidelines! I don't like the way the mint released to the TV shows all these coins before their own announced release date! I don't like the way NGC is handling these "First Day of Issue's" which, you can buy from Armchair TV network prior to the offici

Re: What's Wrong!

Plastic slabs with no quality = Buba's grading service My "mechanical error" was a MS70 Franklin Statesman put into an MS69 Franklin Scientist holder.....and it sat inside "quality control" for a week or 10 days for that??? It cost me shipping and insurance down there and back and back to them again- quality control is the ONLY thing we are paying for (grading is a matter of quality too) and if we don't get that all we have to show for it is a nice plastic holder! Here again, my personal opi
