Competitiveness vs. Common Sense

When is it the right time to throw in the towel? How do I get myself into situations like this? And how am I able to come out of them in such good shape? I've been a casual coin collector for most of my life...about 30 years now. However, its only been in the past couple of years that I've become a serious collector. Actually I consider myself more of a collector/investor now. After all, someday my coins will be liquidated for some reason and I'd hate to learn (or my family to learn) t

Added My 1885-CC MS-64 to my Registry

A dozen new Pictures added plus new coin. Had some time to add more pictures to my Morgan set and added my 1885-CC, Also in Ray's Bull is my new Early Release 2007 Eagle NGC MS69. On another subject only one out of nine coins from 20th Anniversary set made 70, which was a Reverse Proof. All the rest came back 69s. Wont complain. I just cant wait to get them in the mail so that I can add them to my registry.Happy collecting to all and to all a good night. 1885-CC Ob

How Many Collect Stamps?

Or an informal survey. After I posted my previous journal article, I got to thinking and wondering. I'm curious about how many Collector's Society members also collect stamps, besides me? If you do, drop me a line, maybe if there is enough interest, it might move NGC to try some new things. I'm posting a picture showing 3 of my Wild West topical stamps. 3WestStamp

What I Wish For Christmas...

...and it's not my two front teeth. Or, a multi-dimensional Wild West Signature Set. This journal entry will have several thoughts about my Wild West Signature Set. Where it's been, where I want it to go, and pleas to the NGC people who oversee the registries. The main thought I've been having has been germinating since late summer, and auctions from ANR (now Stacks since they've merged) have been the impetus. Several auctions late last summer and fall, as well as their current auction has had n

AAAhhh My Dad

1 for 9 vs. 5 for 9 My father and I both submitted three Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary sets each. For me, all 69's except one PF70 Ultra Cameo. For Dad, one MS70, three Reverse Proof PF70's, and one PF70 Ultra Cameo. Five out of nine in 70 state. I can't believe it, he was three for three with the Reverse Proofs in PF70. Way to go Dad!

The Presidential $1 Coin Program

Will "IN GOD WE TRUST" be Hidden in the slab The new Presidential Dollars are going to be out pretty soon and I'm wondering if the top two grading companies are coming up with a new slab design for this new dollar coin program Because we all know by now that the USMINT's design for this 2007 dollar program has the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" minted around the edge of the coin. I hope the two top grading companies are figuring out away to display this special and important feature.

Yep finally started entering my coins in the registry this evening, makes me realize how many I'm missing and how many I have and need to send in for grading and some for crossover. My Precious Coins

20th Anniversay Silver Dollar Set I ordered two sets of the 20th Anniversary Silver Dollar Sets from the U.S. Mint. My order went to backorder, "great" does that mean I won't get them? A few days later, my wife received an advisement from the Mint about the 20th Anniversay sets, she ordered two sets and they went on backorder! The months went by and I was able to read and hear about NGC's instructions on how to submit Anniversay sets for certification. (What?, I can't open the boxes f

Years Best & Worst ~ and a note about submissions

First Years experience Well, the keyword for this year was education. Although I have been collecting for about 30 years, it was just last year I "made the jump" and started slabbing some coins, and have to admit took a while to get a focus area (now Nickels 38-64)--thats still a work in progress...which was the first lesson, You can't get it all ! The next and probably most important lesson was the difference between "Market" grading, and what I had been doing for years, or "Technical" gradin

update

TIC TOC TIC TOC......update I was shocked to here from some other collectors here. I am new (less then 1 year) collecting. But have acquired a few coins. I have been interested in silver dollars and kennedy half. My Killer Kennedy's is getting closer to being done. Just a quick note about the update. I just looked and they are saying 19 business days for turn around times. So if they received on 1/8/07 that shoud put us at Feb. 1 2007 to ship out. They are receiving alot of coins from deale

Estimating turnaround times

If you login and go to COINS > My order status, all the info is there. Look at the estimated times but more important the current estimated times. Also note the situation that a coin can sit in one stage for a substantial time while there are a lot of coins being graded - it depends mainly on tier I believe. All is explained, just read !

THE U.S. MINT

Z6F a.k.a. as the W uncirculated silver eagle If my info is correct a mintage of 209 thousand, how many people opened there boxes on the 20TH anniversary collection? know the coin can only be graded as a uncirculated W silver eagle, this makes the mintage what 259 thousand at least? leave grading services out of the picture for a moment and add in the 250 thousand 20TH anniversary sets and the mintage jumps to 500 thousand or more, plus 20 thousand in the gold and silver set and your up arou

Turnaround times

To tell the truth "Modern" 12 Working days - 16 Working days, know to tell the truth my last submision was sent in and received 12/29/06 at N.G.C. 5 Sets of 20Th Anniversary Eagles arrived back at my door on 01/23/07 care of our payment to fed-ex. The overnight and insurance cost $35.00 but it was definatly the fastest part of the process, so best of luck if your waiting. Makes you wonder how the big tv shows can sell thousands of early release coins, AND deliver them, within 4 days of thier r

Granite Lady

Well the San Fransciso Earthquake could not distroy this landmark!!! Does anyone know why there is no population report on the the San Francisco gold and silver coins that were issued at the end of last year? We seem to have population reports on the 2007 Jamestown which is barely in its infancy, but none on coins issued months ago. Maybe it should be renamed the "FORGOTTEN LADY".

20th Anniversary in Mint Sealed Boxes

That poor sucker As an American Eagle lover, I find, with great disdain, the policy that in order for the Eagles to be the 20th Anniversary "variety" they must be shipped straight to the grading company without the ability to even look to see if they are worth sending in for grading. As a dutiful Mint slave, I mean subscriber, I order darn near everything that comes up and is somewhat relevant to coin collecting. I picked up a few of the Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary sets and one of the Gol

Mr. Thompson

Mr. Thompson

First Strike is now Early Release, 20th Anniversary can only be determined if it comes in the mint sealed box.

When did the Box the mint uses to send you your coin, become so valuable? I mean, I can kinda see it when they certify the case with the coin like they do with some morgans and Ikes, not really, I am just trying not to offend the people who claim to see the emperors clothes :0 I know this is a hobby, and as such we, and the companies that promote our hobby, can assign any value they want to anything they want. Afterall, why else would a d mintmark on a 1916 Mercury dime make it worth so much

But it won't be one of my registry sets this month... Monthly Coin show this month Coincides with my birthday and I will be going to the parsipany coin show to fill some holes in my Dansco Buffalo collection. I have one of the two pages filled (except for the 37 3 legger) and only need about 2/3's of the D and S on the first page to finish it off. I have tried to keep my set filled with coins that have complete and full dates and rims. Many are AU and several are BU. I sent in one of the 193
