RE: President George "Raging Bull" Washington

NOW THAT'S A CLASSIC! Hat's off to you! Best journal thus far of the year. I agree he fared better with the British. It's a shame what happened; the mint could have made these coins so nice. Just picture the the presidential proofs in a bi-metal, similar to the 2000 library of congress, except with a gold outer circle and a silver center. The business strike coins in circulation could have had a copper circle with a nickle center. George would have been ready to step out on the town.

Re: NGC vs PCGS - The Facts of the Stats.

Statistics don't lie, but exactly what they're telling you is a whole other matter. Unless you submit the same coins to both services, population data isn't a reliable basis for comparing grading standards. If you (TradingSlabs) interpret the population figures you mentioned to mean that PCGS is grading more generously than NGC, wouldn't it be foolish not to submit all your coins to PCGS? PCGS-graded modern coins typically sell for more than the same NGC-graded coins, so if PCGS will grade

Why I bought THIS Bust Half (#2) edited

I'm continuing my self promise to layout the thinking which goes behind my next 10 purchases...no matter what. In fact, even if I've made a dumb mistake ... No, this is not one of my mistakes. This is about the curled base 2, 1827 Bust Half I just bought off ebay. Raw. Pretty chancy eh? 1. I was looking for an 1827 curled base 2. I've been avidly looking for an 1827 curled base 2 for months now, actually, maybe even a year. They just don't show up. Period. On screen the coin 'looke

NGC PCGS and Other Grading Services

And the TV Coin Shops I have been collecting for a number of years and have learned to trust the NGC and PCGS grading service. I am not really concerned with population reports and percentages because I feel that most submitters are submitting only their best coins to either of the two services. I have purchased many other coins graded by other services and found the MS PF 70 isn't. I can tell just by looking at them with the naked eye when I receive them. Many have scratches and other very no

NCG, PCGS, and ICG Grading Reponses

Numbers are numbers! I would like to thank all of you for the interesting comments. All seem valid, some more than others. I guess the bottom line all comes down to acceptability and price. And I think all would agree with that statement. I would like to pass on a word of caution to the nay sayers who say they will only purchase NGC or PCGS. I have lived long enough to see many changes. For example, I remember back in the mid-1960's when Japanese cars were considered "". American cars we

NGC vs PCGS - The Facts of the Stats.

This may be hard to swallow, but you are 10X more likely to get a MS69 on a North Dakota P mint marked Statehood quarter at PCGS than you are at NGC. In fact here are the ratio's for the REST OF THE statehood Quarters: Philly Nevada 2X more MS69's Nebraska 4X more MS69's Colorado 7X more MS69's N. Dakota 10X more MS69's S. Re: Grading Services

Pop reports tell you nothing unless both services graded equal numbers of identicle coins. It could be that NGC has graded a huge submission of early minted coins from one of the TV marketers, and none of the coins PCGS has received would grade 70 at NGC. Or not. There are at least two useful indicators of relative grading standards, the coin marketplace and your eyes. The marketplace says that very high-grade modern PCGS coins are worth more than the same NGC coins. If your eyes tell y

RE: NGC, PCGS, and ICG

Would you spend real dollars for a coin in a slab of a TPG that has/had a lesser reputation? IMO, once a reputation is low, it is exceedingly hard to raise up too far. I for one, would not spend much for a coin in ICG holders (or any other holders than NGC/PCGS). Melt value, perhaps, but I wouldn't spend much more than that. It's difficult enough, without having to worry about the reputation of the TPG, to do well. Also, resale is a concern. I have heard of long waits to sell ICG graded coi

Grading Services

POP Reports If the POP reports show any one grading service is better than any other then PCGS should be the best because their POP's are lower than any other service. It has been said that ICG is not as Conservative as NGC. The current NGC POP reports show that NGC has grading 70 sets of ASE's at MS-70 and PCGS's current reports show they have not yet graded a set of ASE's at MS-70. According to the numbers it appears NGC is not as Conservative as PCGS. Does that mean we should no buy NGC gra

RE: NGC, PCGS, and ICG

What you're looking at is not an accuracy rating, per se. The table on the front page of every Coin Dealer Newsletter (CDN or Grey Sheet) shows the percentage of full Grey Sheet Bid prices paid on a sight-unseen basis for a selected list of coins graded by each of the grading services. Here's how it's supposed to work: The CDN puts out another publication called the Certified Coin Dealer Newsletter (CCDN or Blue Sheet), which lists only prices paid sight unseen for certified coins, and it

2 Diamonds in the Rough

Makes me think about collecting the Kennedy?s now. Ok, so I am out on eBay before late last year and I find this auction for 10 coins. It was marked as all silver, some modern. 9.99 was the buy it now price. I figured why not it is only 10 bucks with free shipping. Did the buy now button and 4 days I get my 10 coins. When I got the box, not all of the coins were silver. They were silver looking though. Here is what was in it and what NGC graded the 10 coins at: 2001 Eagle ? AU58 (Wish

RE: NGC, PCGS, and ICG

How can they have an accuracy rating? Grading is largely subjective In order for these numbers to be valid, you would have to conclude that the Grey Sheet has graders who are far more experienced at grading than the grading companies. How else would they be qualified to determine how accurate the grades are. I cant see how you could put stock in those numbers. http://NumisGuard.com - Protecting Collectors One Coin at a Time

NGC, PCGS, and ICG

Is the Grey Book wrong? Well according to COIN DEALER NEWS, ICG IS AS ACCURATE AS NGC OR PCGS, IF NOT MORE. AS OF JANUARY 5, 2007 ICG HAS AN OVERALL ACCURACY RATING OF 80.24%, NGC IS 79.13%, PCGS IS 84.71% and ANACS IS 56.83%, if I am reading correctly. ICG is second only to PCGS. CDN Greysheet has repeatedly shown that ICG has a higher grading average than NGC. Can anyone explain why then ICG does not have the reputation amoung the hobby as NGC or PCGS. Would love to hear some opinions.

My First Grades

All Perfect!! Never graded my coins before. Thought I would pull my ASE proofs (40) and selected 8 I thought worthy of grading. I did not know what to look for so I laid out all the coins and picked out the ones I thought looked the nicest. If you look at a large number of proofs together there is a visual difference. Submitted 6 and all came back PF70.

Re: Interesting Predicament

Have had this problem numerous times. I am a newbie to this sport of numismatics (just started collecting about a year or so back with the state quarters and some Eisenhower dollars). As an avid surfer of the web, I ran across the Collection Society pages from NGC, and decided to enroll my new collection (just for fun). As I have purchased a majority of my graded coins from dealers and EBay, I have ran across about 5 or 6 times now, where someone else has it in their collection already. The f

Interesting predicament

re: Dual Ownership? It's happened to me before but mine was accidental. I had slabbed a bunch of 2005 Clad JFKs and had sold 1 or 2 on ebay. While adding one of them, I typoed the last digit and submitted. Turned out that the number I'd accidentally entered was the same one I sold on ebay... What I think has happened in your case is that the person may have removed it from his set but has not unregistered it yet...

Interesting predicament

Dual ownership? I recently purchased a certified NGC coin and when I went to enter it into my registry set, I received a message that the coin was still in another member's set and that they would contact this person immediately. Well I have to coin in my possession so whomever the previous owner is, please remove it. Has this happened to anyone else? 1941 PF68

Presidential Coins early Release

Maybe it isn't directly related to the Mint I've been reading about the early release of the Presidential coins, primarily on the TV sites. I think that there is a simple reason behind this. I worked for an armored car company for about 10 years. In that time I saw the introduction of the SAC $1 and state quarters. In the case of the quarters, they came to the local Fed banks in bulk, unrolled. They were then sent to the larger local armored car companies to be rolled and distributed to the

Coin Collecting, The hobby of Kings. This post includes a list of the 128 coins the mint will (most likely) release this year. All these new rolls are comming out, but is it worth looking through rolls when all the really high grade coins are going to be in the mint sets? I know the BS coins from the 60's are worth plenty now compared to the High Grade SMS coins of that day, but I think those SMS coins are WAY easier to tell apart from the Business strikes than todays SMS coins are.
