My Fabulous New Coin

superb new edition to my set All this talk of TPG's got me thinking recently- and thinking is not always one of my strong suits. Some may consider me insane, especially since NOBODY collects anymore..only buying for the investment value-but I rely heavily on NGC, PCGS, and ANACS for my coins--the ones I crack out of their slabs and place in my album sets. I can always count on a top-quality coin being within a point either direction, of accurate grading. They are the best coins PERIOD to crack

I Would Like to Thank the Academy

An Award to Remember Did you watch the Oscar Awards last week? I watched bits and pieces of it. Did you see the woman who won an award and thanked her WIFE!!?? Did you see our former Vice President win an award for his re-election campaign movie?ah?I mean global warming movie. Did you see the guy win the supporting actor award for his movie part as a foul-mouthed dirty old man? Isn?t Hollywood great!!?? No wonder I don?t go to the movies any more. Even if you watched the whole thing, it

Disagree. Do not buy the coin...

read this to see why....... I would say that a disagreement is in order...nobody collects coins as a hobby anymore...the key word is INVESTMENT...MONEY...the only reason to buy a coin is for it's future value. and for that reason alone you must buy the TPG with the most recognized reputation and the most potential for an increase in the almighty dollar. Don't attempt to grade yourself...the TPG's have guarentees...and when it comes time to sell and make the bucks...that will have a major fac

Agreed!! Buy THE Coin!

But if you are not expert at grading coins, I would still be more wary of the other TPG's. Yes, by all means, always buy the coin not the holder. But I still feel safer in buying NGC/PCGS than any other grading company. But it is partly my inability to see the "bad" in a raw coin that makes me stick exclusively with the 2 majors and the percieved security of these 2 TPG's. It is my money and this is what I will spend it on. If I ever feel I am capable of picking a coin and knowing the pro

The cost of principal

I have heard the words honor and ethical bandied about on the chat boards now and again.   These words mean more to some than others, and different things to different people.I have heard it said that history is written by the victors. The british might agree, if they had to sit through our history classes and listen to us go on and on about men they consider traitors against the crown. The fact is, had the war of independence gone the other way, that is EXACTLY how we would be reading and thin

TPG's

Survey   Hi, In response to Dennis Edwards post about the ANA and the PNG's survey that ranks TPG's. NGC is the official grading service for the ANA and the PNG. PCGS was the official service for the PNG until recently and PCGS had to remove PNG from there label. IMO that is a conflict of interest. Maybe someone more "neutral" should do a survey.

ICG & ANACS? Oh, please....

Nice try with your "survey." I like how it came out to nice, even numbers. That suggests to me that either: 1) Only 4 people voted, including the pollster, or 2) Its totally made up. Why don't you start a poll in the forums and we'll see what the real vote is? I suspect it will come out much different. If it was up to me, NGC would be even more restriced than it is today, requiring at least 50% of the coins to be NGC-holdered in order to participate. That would eliminate all the P

my thaughts on regestry

i for 1 would love to see only ngc slabs in the regestry. pcgs has its own site for there regestry why do they need to be here. is ngc making money by having them allowed here. i think that if i owned a company and there was another like it competing with me i wouldnt want there product in my area. lots of ppl collect just to collect and others do it as a compatition.comptition ruins things sometimes.thats why i only collect to collect,my sets r not and probobly never will be top.and i don

re: Registry Poll

NGC registry I would like to add my ?? to the discussion on the inclusion of other TPGs? slabbed coins into the NGC registry. I am very much against it. Why? Just read the post by Dennis Edwards. The 3 point he made are right on the money. That was a pretty good post Dennis.

COIN REGISTRY

To Be or Not To Be! When I was young, dumb and had ICG coins, I also wanted NGC to include ICG. Writing and listening to no avail, I solved this problem by getting rid of my ICG's. The PROBLEM is you want to register your coins! Don't complain to NGC, go to ICG and tell them to start a REGISTRY! That will give you a place to put your coins. Have you seen more than ONE TV show that sells ICG's? Most that I've watched usually stay with the top two (with ANACS on a couple), Turn your TV of

Re: Not a growing conflict

Are you kidding? I disagree. In my opinion, adding both ICG and ANACS will not destroy the NGC Registry. In fact I think it will improve it. I have found that both ICG and ANACS offer excellent quality, sometime better then PCGS & NGC. Calling them ?second tier? is both unfair and disingenuous. We all have coins that are graded by ICG and ANACS and unfortunately we are left with two options when it comes to our Collectors Society registry; have them graded by NGC or PCGS at added expe

NOT a Growing Conflict

Adding ICG and ANACS would destroy the NGC Registry I believe there is no "growing conflict" about adding ICG and ANACS coins to the NGC Registry. I don't believe that any collector invested in top tier TPG graded coins would want this. IMHO it would cheapen the Registry. I sent Eaton Coin Man Jr. an email, asking for number of votes he tallied in his poll and there was no response. The statistics claimed are not scientific in any way and should be discounted. Bottom-line: I would probably

No Census = No Registry

If they don't even keep track of what they graded, they don't deserve to be in the registry. ANY grading company that doesn't maintain a census, either through subscription or free to the public, shouldn't be in the registry. Include other companies, and you lose the ability to track finest certified, or pops, or any of the other good things that a registry provides. Keep the scoring relative to the known population/grade. Adding other TPGs will skew individual collection scores upward, u

Re: Registry Poll

NGC would be foolish to allow ANACS and ICG coins into its registry sets. I don't think they are foolish, so I doubt it will happen. Forget about the Coin Dealer Newsletter ratings that put ICG above NGC. NGC is more respected than ICG (and ANACS), and NGC coins sell for more money. In fact, here's a summary of the most recent, 2006 PNG/ICTA Survey of Third Party Graders, copied from the PNG website (PNG = the Professional Numismatic Guild, the organization of professional coin dealers):

Population of TOP POP coins

I've got a great example of why we need to use both NGC & PCGS population census numbers to assign values and Registry set scores. I have a 1963 Half Dollar that is currently residing in a PCGS holder, and is graded by that company at MS66. The PCGS population at that grade level is 14 with none higher. However, the NGC population at that grade level is 64 with none higher. There are obviously more NGC coins than there are PCGS coins in this particular instance. I would think that the

How come NGC's Population Census is used for PCGS coins?

Have you ever noticed that if you have a PCGS coin in your NGC Registry Set, the Census numbers shown are for NGC coins in that catagory? I wonder what it would take for NGC to show the current PCGS Population Census numbers for PCGS coins. They already have to link up with PCGS to verify certificate numbers, so it seems to me that they could work out some agreement with PCGS to include the census numbers too. It may be a little bit more complicated than I make it out to sound, but I sure wo

My desk is littered with BU coins that I would grade BU and sell for $14.95

I read an ad that had the 2007 ASE'S for sale. Graded BU and slabbed by NGC for $21.95! The copy said the grading and slabbing by NGC was a $5 value! We all know what's happening. there is no grading. Obviously every ASE is BU. They dont make an ASE for circulation. Any coin directly from the mint and never entered into circulation is BU. NGC is getting $5 for a slab that costs $1. They have a minimum wage worker stuffing and sealing them for the huge coin wholesalers. The people who
