Why I bought this Bust Half (coin #4)

I think I need to stop buying coins for awhile, lest I go broke. But I couldn't resist this one. This is just to remind myself that I said I would post the reasons for my buying the 'next 10 coins' for my collection. Well, I'm up to coin #4 with #5 soon to follow. If this bores you, fine, I'd be bored too, if it wasn't for the fact that I really believe, really really believe, that the more questions you ask about a given coin and the more positive answers you can come up with, the greater the l

RE: E-bay, Lessons Learned

Your Not Alone Don't feel bad-there are plenty of us out there doing the same exact thing. I have come to look at Ebay similar to flea market vendors, collector shops, catalog ads, etc. Buyer Beware. I have a tendency to trust everyone until they give me reason not to. Buying and selling on Ebay makes that a tough policy to follow. Unless it is a seller I am familiar with, I look at everything detail of the ad closely when considering raw coins. Lately I have been only purchasing graded

E-bay , Lessons learned

But fail again and again I like many other people have inherited coins and have chosen to sell, or become a collector. I am somewhere in between. I have sold early, and now wish I would not have, and kept many items. I also have bought many items, mainly on E-bay and have come to the conclusion that maybe collecting is being killed by E-bay. Big words I know but I do have examples. I bought three coins in December. I sent four coins in to be graded by NGC, one being from my inherited coins

Why not allow ANACS-graded coins into the Registry

I don't see anything wrong with it I own probably 10 coins that were graded by ANACS, and find no instance at all where I thought the coins weren't graded accurately to a level of standards that both NGC and PCGS would respect. I personally think that the only area where ANACS has an issue is the perception in the coin collecting community that they're grading standards are inferior to NGC or PCGS, and I feel that is exactly that; a perception. ANACS may of course be helping to feed that by th

70 = PERFECT Dont knock scrutiny

To me, a 70 should not be a common grade. I truly do not believe that PCGS is biased against grading coins 70. If anything, they just look harder for imperfections than others might. Where another company might let a miniscule imperfection go, PCGS is more likely not to. I will always side with the company grades hard than one who is too lose with their high grades.

20th Anniversary SAEs and one happy camper.

Sometimes you just expect the norm to occur. It is nice when something surprises you. I submitted my 20th anniversary SAE set to PCGS a couple weeks ago with no real expectations for the grades. I assumed they wouls probably grade 69s as they are taken care of alot better than normal releases. Even at 69, these coins are really nice and doing well at auction. I received an email yesterday from PCGS advising me that my grades had been finalized. I was very pleasantly surprised to see tha

TPG as it relates to Proof Coins

1936-1942 My Experiences It has been my experience that other TPGs are not "up-to-snuff" with NGC and PCGS in the grading of proof coins, specifically the early issues from 1936-1942. I have purchased several of these proof coins in what I call "rogue" holders and there are some bargains out there for the astute collector. I have yet to find an ANACS, PCI, CCGS, UNC (I have not purchased any ICG) holdered coins that have crossed into the same grade and/or designation as NGC. It is my exper

TPG's ANACS and ICG ~ SHOULD THEY BE ALLOWED?

MORE REASONS PRO AND NAY~ RESULT.... I have no objection to allowing ICG and ANACS into registry. I think it saves money, less cross-submissions. It also allows that money to be spent on more coins. This is a great thing, and surely NGC will not miss the income too much. Other reasons in support of this are that ANACS taught us to grade, their coins are generally graded accurately. ICG is too conservative, that cannot hurt the registry, either. So, I find several attractions to the idea.

REGISTRY POLL REVISITED

ANACS & ICG??NO WAY! I vote B on leaving ANACS & ICG out. Mainly because the quality of coin is not there. Out of all the ICG coins I have had, only 1 do I thank would cross over to the same MS70 grade. Are we just interested in a holder with a grade or a coin that matches the grade?????If I pay for a coin that is graded an MS70 then I should expect nothing less than a MS70 coin. If I was just after points then I would take my 69"s and break them out of NGC holders and send them in

inventory control

My coins, are nothing auto parts. Auto parts have numbers, thus it is easy to control inventory. I have been looking a software program to help me contol my coin collection. Just the other day I went through just one of the red 9" single row storage boxes that hold a majority of my Morgans. I was suprised to find 16 1884-O in unc condition. Is there software programs out there that can help me. I'm almost afraid to look in another of my boxes. I don't need 16 unc 1884-O MSD's. I have atleast

EAGLE 20th ANNIVERSARY

SILVER DOLLAR SET I now have nine 2006-W Silver Eagles after receiving my lastest one on March 5, 2007. The best being MS-70 (Only one) and the rest MS-69! How many do you need you ask? Being a Collector and Coin Collector I say you can never have too many! Looking at this coin, can you honestly not say that NGC has the best presentation? 2006MVC-17

THANKS NGC!

LISA GETS A PF70 FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! I recently had a couple of problems with some coins which were at NGC for grading. One group seemed to have gotten "lost" in quality control, and the other group got "mishandled" by the recieving department and came back to me with a fingerprint or two. Lisa in customer service got involved and got my coins back to me in really quick order and NGC took care of me on the fingerprint issue. I am very pleased with the professional service she gave me and

Where to send my Yellowstones?

As I said in an earlier post, PCGS sometimes won't grade a MS70. Look at the pop reports for the 20th anniversary ASE's by the way I voted not to let the other graders in. does that make it a shrinking controversy? so now there are 5 votes or 9 votes casted. On to my dilemma...I just acquired a 1999 Yellowstone proof and bus strike collection. my impression is they are perfect. i have used both NGC and PCGS. PCGS has better turnaround (by far) and they tend to sell for more (not imp to m

Junk the Holder? Buy the coin?

A heads up to what's up. It's interesting that we have as a topic of conversation, the issue of TPG coins in holders vs. buying the coin for the intrinsic value of the coin (eye appeal, quality). This website is devoted to those who collect coins that are graded and encapsulated. We can have it both ways. I have purchased many coins, without TPG assistance in determining "value". Beauty, as they say is in the eyes of the beholder. Likewise I have purchased numerous coins graded by TPG'

New Pestilence Dollars

I bought my smooth edge already... The number of varieties of errors already surfacing indicates there are some real problems in the production process. Unless the mint intends to put out a shoddy product (which given some of its other offerings, may be true), it will have to seriously revamp the $1 process. this would have the theoretical consequence of reducing the number of errors. as for what errors i would pick up, and how aggressively, here is my two cents, well, actually, my two buc

Whats with all the errors already? Does anyone have an opinion on the errors on the new Washington coin? I have seen missing letters from e pluribus unum, upside down rims and smooth (no lettering) rims. Should these be collected aggressively? I'd be interested in your opinions.

Yes... Buy the COIN.....

SELL the holder!!! How many times have you been on the bourse floor and spied a coin that looked totally AWESOME... only to discover that it resided in a holder from NTC or MCCS or any of the "lesser" TPG slabs?? I would venture to say that has happened to most all of us. A great looking coin but in the wrong slab, so you let it slip through your fingers. Literally!! Why not buy that gem for a fraction and put it in a REAL slab?? I have done this. Dealers will give you a substantial break

Re: TPG's

PNG's relationships with NGC and PCGS only confirm the TPG survey results that the coin dealers prefer NGC and PCGS. But that?s not a conflict of interest.   I think Michael D. may misunderstand what a conflict of interest is. In simple terms, a conflict of interest is when somebody?s relationship with one person could be harmful to another person he also has a relationship with. So a conflict of interest requires three people: person #1, and the two people (#2 and #3) person #1 has confli
