NGC Journals

No Photo finish this trip.....

The last time I submitted coins to NGC I kept a journal of days and estimates posted online. This trip I did not start a journal of my coins race through the many laps(e)at NGC and chart the finishing times from receive to grade to QA to final imaging. Perhaps I should have. I currently have 14 coins at NGC of which 3 were for a multi-holder. Currently I have the 3 multi-coins in QA and the other 11 somewhere in a place called receiving. Sounds like someone is still trying to add gas to th

Photo Experimentation Is Over

...finally figured out the tint and more. At last, I feel like I'm getting there in regards to my pictures. The big thing I learned was: the green tint was not coming from my ceiling, but from the light source, and how I was positioning the coin. I tried the different white balance settings on my cam, and found the automatic was probably the best for my light source and how I position the coin. At least for right now anyway. Silver coins are still picking up a little more, but I'm confident

Submission received

Got my coins back - very pleased. Sent my coins in on 4/2 received most back on 4/27. Excellent packaging and a completely was surprised as to some of the grading, assumes some to be 68-69 and they were 70 . Only waiting on some older coins - some of which I am certain are in very poor condition. But I await their grading nonetheless. Will send more in when I get the chance.

Still waiting on NGC

1947 Uncirculated P.D.S set My first coins sent to NGC were received on April 6. Current turnaround on my tier is currently 12 days. I guess they are running a little late. Maybe all those 2007 sets ready to flood them has something to do with it, or alot of submissions are going for the 'in & out' 24 hour tier, and bumping my post position. I am pretty patient though, so I guess I will quit my whining, and just wait. This is what the set looked like before coming out of the holder. [att

TEN COINS BACK FROM NGC

this set just keeps growing... I finally got enough time to go by the post office and pick up some packages..among them were my submissions to NGC. A great turnaround-exactly 10 days, just as listed for the tier on World Coin submissions. Just a fabulous group I sent this time-with coins from Andorra, San Marino, Iceland, Congo, Ghana, Somalia etc etc..since I purchased the Krause catalog I have found dozens of coins that fit my signature set of sailing ship themed coins. Now comes another

I Have "8 Tail Feather Fever"

This is a New Disease That I have recently "Acquired" I'm Addicted and I know the "First Step" is admitting that I have a problem. As you may be able to tell from my teaser comment I just acquired the 8 TF Morgan that has taken my set to first place in the Registry. This coin is the only one currently in NGC 64 DPL. I hope all of you enjoy the opportunity to be a part of my intervention. I know I need to be taken to Rehab to help with this cruel disease that robs me of cash from my wallet. I s

My first submission.....

20th Anniversary sets and now the wait begins Last fall when I first ordered a 20th Anniversary set from the mint, I couldn't wait to see it! Within a week I ordered another, and like alot of others was placed on back-order status. Listening & reading, began to wonder if I would get them at all? Not long before I recieved them I learned not to open the boxes so that was good, but really hard! My wife has laughed at me several times the last 3 month, because I had these special sets, that

2007 P Sac Error coins

Anybody Else Finding These? I have a couple of rolls of 2007 P Sac Dollars which I thought would grade out great but upon inspection found what appears to be a "burnished" area right above the "E" in e pluribus unum on the back side of the coins. Upon inspection the mark is a series of concave marks which appear to be faint wing impressions. In addition, some of the coins have a shaddow effect which runs from the lettering to the outside rim of the coin on the back- the fronts are all great.

Is it THRILLING?

My apologies for not following up with write ups on the past few coins I've acquired, but I haven't been able to do much typing because of a neurologic problem I have. But I thought I'd type this one in because it's short. If its not THRILLING, it's worth selling. I re-examined the photos of all of my coins, and I can honestly say that only a fraction of them are THRILLING (to me). Why not keep those, and sell the rest? So step 2 is to re-examine these coins in hand and then make the

Beginnings

After collecting 'garbage' grade coins for years, I carefully delve into the 'graded' arena. When I was a child of around 8 years old, my grandfather gave me a small box of silver dimes. At the time, I was immediately captivated by the seemingly innocent discs of silver. The struck me as being simultaneously strange and beautiful. Thus a 'coin collector' was born! For the next 10 years I gradually expanded my collection of general circulation and obsolete coins by whatever means presented th

Proof Buffalo MS 70?

Error or typo I'm looking for some assistance on this one. I recently had a proof Buffalo come back as a MS 70. Very nice grade for the coin except that it is a proof. My question is, since NGC graded the coin by three individuals and went through quality control for accuracy, do I have a special coin(error)worth keeping as graded or is it strictly a typo? Any thougts would greatly be appreciated. signed puzzled

One More Experiment...

...the next journal article will share my final decision, plus a few general thoughts about the photos. First, I want to thank everyone who has responded to my pictures. I truly appreciate all the comments and suggestions. What really is touching to me, is all of you taking the time to look, make suggestions and offer comments. I do thank all of you. Tonight I'm carrying out my final experiment. Mike Cooper had shared some suggestions on lighting with me yesterday, so I went out to the hardw

Taking Pictures - NGC vs PCGS problems

I think I've worked out my pictures problems with NGC coins, but not PCGS. While I've worked most of my problems with NGC certified coins, my pictures of PCGS coins are still problematic and tend to have a blueish tint. However, one picture that I am particularly proud of is in my set of Walking Liberty 50C coins. Take a look at my 1941S coin. I think I got the beautiful toning just right. To see this coin you will need to look at my set (Augman's Walking Liberty Half Dollars) as I ca

Pictures

I think your picture is very good, nice detail, super clear, in focus. About the blue tint though, I like the pictures to reflect the actual color of the coin. I too am still trying to get it right. Experiment! Experiment! here's my latest effort. Not as clear as yours

Wondering about Mercury Dime sets

IS THERE A LIST AVAILABLE? Is there a list available somewhere of prices and/or values of complete Mercury dime sets? Just for the record, I consider a true complete set to contain the Micro S and the overdates. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Thanx.

Digital Photography Revisited

Or more trials & tribulations... ...or maybe it's not as simple as it looks. I'm still working with my digital cam, trying to get pictures to show my coins to their best advantage. In a previous journal entry, I wrote I thought I was getting the green tint on my photos from the ceiling boards here in my basement where collecting central is located. Earlier this afternoon, my brother came in to help me put some white contact paper on the ceiling boards. Well, guess what, yes, I'm still gett
