Auction Advice for what it's worth

Here's my auction advice. As others have previously stated, you must do your research. I would suggest that you check out Teletrade. You can sign up for free and watch the bidding on current auctions and you can also easily check out past auction prices. I have noticed a few trends. 1) Currently, on many coins PCGS prices tend to be about twice that of NGC. 2) The "value" of a coin is about one-half the Numismedia wholesale price for NGC graded coins. NGC Graded Proofs Presidents

My Proof Presidents came back from NGC. I sent 20 Proof Presidents (4 of each) to NGC for grading. I got 4 PF 70 (1 each of Washington, Adams, Jefferson & Madison) the rest were PF 69. To me the grading ration of PF70 to PF69 seems fair. I also sent some Presidents to the folks across the street and I am still waiting to see their verdict.

Collection now in top 100

The Presidents pushed me into the top 100. With the addition of the Presidents to my sets my rank jumped to 97. I am focusing on 20th and 21 Century coins only. I know there are a lot area and specific coins missing, but I will continue to improve the collection as funds permit.

RE: Pricing for PF70 Presidential Dollars

I believe a coin's worth is primarily based on what you are willing to pay for it. But, I personally think the ebay bids you mentioned are way too high. I would wait at least a couple of months to see if the prices stabilize and for more PF70's to get out onto the market. Also, you may want to check out some of the auction sites, such as Teletrade or Heritage, to see what these coins are selling for.

Census Population

You can get a NGC Census population by clicking going to a particular coin set then clicking the coin description in "Slot Description" column. For example, go to your Presidential $1 Coins, Proof set - then on the coin descriptor, i.e. " 2007 S $1 George Washington", you will be taken to NGC Census report.

NGC vs PCGS grading

Here's a recent example of NGC and PCGS grading. Just some food for thought: I purchased 20 Little Rock Proof Silver dollars from the mint recently. I randomly selected 10 coins to be graded by NGC and 10 by PCGS. Well I got the results back from both: NGC = 10 PF70 UC // PCGS 10 = PR69 DCAM. Is this proof that either NGC is grading too high or PCGS too low? While I like the NGC grade of course, I think a better mix of grades might have made me happier.

First Spouse Coins

First Spouse Coins over subscribed. The US Mint announced within a couple of hours of the First Spouse coins going sale that they were over subscribed. Well, I did place my order before the announcement was made. Hopefully, I'll be one of the lucky ones this time around. Today the mint's page shows these coins as being unavailable. If I am lucky to receive my First Spouses it won't be until after July 4. More to come later.

You have to laugh

You have to laugh at some of the prices people will pay for some coins. I purchase a great many of my coins via Teletrade auctions. I generally believe that the auction market is a good judge of the value of a coin. However, one has to laugh at some of the prices being bidded. For example, I've noticed recently that PF70 G$25 Eagles are fetching upwards of $1200 for each coin. For the life of me I can't understand why people belive these coins are worth nearly 3 times its original pric

Taking Pictures - NGC vs PCGS problems

I think I've worked out my pictures problems with NGC coins, but not PCGS. While I've worked most of my problems with NGC certified coins, my pictures of PCGS coins are still problematic and tend to have a blueish tint. However, one picture that I am particularly proud of is in my set of Walking Liberty 50C coins. Take a look at my 1941S coin. I think I got the beautiful toning just right. Let's Compare Customer Service

I think NGC has the best customer service. Compared to PCGS and Hertiage, NGC wins hands down. When I have had to contact NGC for any reason I have usually received a response in less than 24 hrs, often within hours. However, with Heritage responses often take a few days. With PCGS, well I'm still waiting. In September I sent a email concerning verifying a PCGS slabbed coin. No response. Sent the email again, and again (4 times in all) ... Still no response. Happy with NGC

Right on time and great grades. Just received one of my invoices this morning and it was right on schedule. Also, of the 25 statehood (2006) quarters submitted, 18 came back as PF 70 and the rest PF 69. I submitted these coins under the Economy and according to NGC's schedule estimated time was 14 days. It took exactly 14 days for this submission. Great work NGC.

More on Buying the Holder

Is there a real difference between a NGC and PCGS holder? I buying a lot of my coins using Teletrade Auction and I only buy NGC or PCGS certified coins. (I know for some this may be a bad practice, but so far I have been very satisfied with my results.) Anyway, I have noticed that a particular coin of the same grade will generally sell for about twice as much if it is in a PCGS holder than a NGC holder. Can anyone out there give me a good reason why PCGS should command such a premium? I
