Jamestown 400th Anniversary

Know your history??? For my forth journal entry, I?d thought that I touch on something a little close to home, Jamestown. Yes I live in the wonderful state of Virginia and we are celebrating the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, which I?m sure most of you know. Now the U.S. mint released the Jamestown Commemorative silver and gold coins earlier this year to also celebrate this event. I personally do not collect commemorative coins but being a Virginian I felt as if I needed to buy this one. So I

Sorry about your Morgans

Beauty is in the eye Sorry that your Morgans didnt do as well as you wanted. I have the feeling maybe I am getting ready for the same kind of scenerio with my mint sets. I have a 1946PDS Uncirculated mint set collection also, but I wanted to see how the 1947's came back first. With each passing day, I am beginning to wonder if maybe the coins looked better to me than they really are. ---- NOT!! I truly believe that as much time as most of us spend learning how to grade, and recognize the feat

It's a learning experience

My submission did not go as well as I would have hoped I recently (well, back in the beginning of April) submitted 7 Morgans. I have not gotten the final notification from NGC that they have shipped, but I did receive an e-mail last night containing the images that I paid for. Unfortunately, I only got images for 3 coins, which implies quite strongly that NGC rejected the other 4. Even the ones that I did get images for did not grade as high as I would have hoped. The highest grade that I got

Ernie Di Megs Coin Collection

"WHAT IS A TEASER?" I started coin collecting when I was ten years old. But I stopped when I was 13 years old. I went back to coin collecting in 1973. I started buying Mint sets, Proof sets, from the U.S. Mint. My first full collection was the Franklin Half Dollars set, which I bought at a dealer in the Gimbels and Macys Department stores, I spent $200.00 on this set. In 1986 I sold this set for $550.00, this set had about 6 or 7 Full Bell Lines coins. In late 1973, I went to the bank t

Diversify into Platinum?

Is platinum at a viable entry point? As time for evaluation of holdings is here, thoughts of buying more gold coins as I have in the past cross my mind. Should I consider silver? Should I consider proof silver and copper? The answer seems to be platinum. I am buying small platinum coins, hoping to build a respectable collection in time. A half ounce of platinum is roughly equal to one ounce of gold, currently. I can transfer a bit of gold out, and platinum in for low cost. This diversi

What kind of error?

A 1942/41? Or a yet to be discovered error? I just received this error coin I purchased on EBay. I paid about $7.50 for it. It has gone to NGC, but since it will be a while before I get it back, maybe someone out there knows if it is a version of 1942 over 41 error, or Everyone has been very helpful in the past, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who knows more about this coin. Even if you just have a guess at what it might be, let me hear from ya. I will try to post a pic of both side

coin certification

I have two 20th anniversary silver sets Unfortuornately I'm new to the hobby, and had not joined the collectors society. Only after the purchase of and opening my first anniversary set did I learn that the only way NGC would certify the set was for it to be unopened.

They Are A Movin' My 1947 PDS Uncirculated Mint Sets are now in Quality Control. My guess is that they should move pretty quick now. If the lady luck of numanistics is smiling on me, they will all come back MS70. (I know, probably wishful thinking.) I will try to post a pic of the coins' obverse, but the picture may be too big to post in here. I will definitly post pics of the graded versions when they come in. The pic posted, what do you all think? At least MS66? Let me know what you think. I

KOE Didn't get it completely right

There are no old farts here... King of Eagles, in a very well-written recent posting, described himself as an "Old Fart". How can he be? How can any of us be? We're all engaging in a hobby that occasionally takes us back in time to when were kids collecting coins, cats-eye marbles, or lizards, even. (I confess to the latter, yes, but please don't tell my wife) I'm willing to bet that this hobby, for most of us, anyway, is something that we dabbled in when we were young, and that we get the p

Worlds Largest Gold Coin, 220 pounds, WOW!

but can you afford it? The worlds largest gold coin is 220 pounds, 20 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick and is made in Canada. The Royal Canadian made the coin for bragging rights for the worlds largest coin and is worth over $1 million dollars. It was unveiled on May 3, 2007. Is Now The Time For Gold ???

Just Something to Consider............ I collect and enjoy coins as much as anyone who is a part of the NGC Registry, but as an "Old Fart" I just wanted to impart a little life experience and wisdom. Now may be the time for those that have never owned a certified gold coin to add one or two to there sets. Out of all the coins I have bought over the last 5 years of collecting I have had more appreciation on some of my nicer gold coins than anything else I have collected. Just a thought. King of

Certified Coin Auctions II

Why pay more? In rely to Tomt102516 journal entry, I too watch a lot of online auctions and can?t believe what some people are paying for some of these coins. I also have a few online dealers that I check before bidding and as he does, bid according to the prices I would pay if I were to buy it from the dealer, now after doing that I almost always get out bid. Why pay more? I thought the auctions where a way to save a dollar or two, guess not. Now think about these poor people that buy from th

Certified Coin Auctions

What an eye opening experience. Last Sunday, I had placed bids on six coins at a very popular on-line auction. I had bided to win these coins, but did not bid more than I could have bought them for at an on-line store I use frequently. There was nothing special about the coins, they were not toned and are considered very common. When the auction ended at 10:00pm that night, I had been outbid on all six of them. I was outbid big time. These coins sold for way more than they should have and I co

20th Anniversary sets graded!

Not what I hoped, but grateful... My first submission of 2 20th Anniv. Silver sets got to NGC on the 18th of April, went to "Scheduled" on the 25th, then to "Quality Control" on the 27th. Got the grades yesterday, all 69's except one PF-70 Ultra Cameo. Like everyone, hoping for all 70's, and my balloon was deflated for the last 24 hours. I told my wife at first, I should have kept them in the sealed boxes, at least in my mind they were still 70's, but now with the pictures NGC made of them,

Sending proofs to NGC

Funny you should mention it It is funny that Bruce brought up the thought of sending his silver proof sets in to be graded. I will be sending in my clad proof sets, 1998 through 2006 a couple sets at a time. In my opinion, it is a shame to break open proof sets, but I believe it would improve the value more often than not. If the complete set came back PR70, then that seems like the best possible scenerio. The worst would be that they came back less than PR65. I had another thought also. What

Royal Canadian Mint

~~TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY!!~~ The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a welcome addition to any piggy bank on Thursday -- a monster gold coin with a face value of $1 million that it says is the world's biggest, purest and highest denomination coin. The coin weighs 220.5 pounds, WOOOOW!!! The coin is 21 inches in diameter. 220.5 pounds x 683.30 ounce = $2410682.40 just in gold!! I just thought I would share the photo with everyone. Re: Imperfect Art of Grading

Grading is definitely an imperfect art. Sometimes I wonder how much of an artist that I am. I've gone back and forth with my successes and failures. Sometimes I do very well and sometimes I feel like I couldn't get a coin to grade if my life depended on it. I've submitted quite a few coins for crossovers from several grading companies with only two successes. One was an ANACS coin that didn't upgrade but it did cross. The other wasn't even a crossover--it was a designation review for a full

Statehood Quarters Silver Proof Sets

Should I, or shouldn't I? Decision time. I've got Silver Proof sets 1999-2006, and should I submit them for grading? I don't know. If I do, then they're not "sets" any more, are they? Not that having them graded wouldn't possibly enhance the value of at least a few of the quarters, but then you lose that asthetic (sic) of having the coins physically within a set, plus the cost of grading 40 coins. In addition, why not do the other parts of the sets as well? That makes it paying for another 40+

My coins are moving, too

The tension builds.... :-) I currently have two submissions in. One was received 4/3, the other on 4/10. I should've done them both at once, but the truth of the matter is, I ran out of flips, and I wanted to get the ball rolling, so I sent as many coins as I had flips for in the first batch. Anyway, my 4/3 batch didn't leave Received state until Tuesday, and has already made it to Quality Control state. But what's more exciting is that my 4/10 batch went into Scheduled For Grading state tod

Scheduled for grading Well, my 1947 P.D.S Uncirculated Mint sets are finally scheduled for grading. I hope the process moves a little quicker from this point. My hope is that the wait will be rewarded with MS66 or better. I have been excited about this set since I first laid eyes on it. I will be sending in two 1921P and two 1921D Mercury Dimes in a day or so. I have three almost complete sets of Merc Dimes. One set is complete except for the 1942/42D overdate. One set is complete except for 1
