Learning how to use my new Digital SLR

If you read my previous entry on this subject, then you have been duly warned... I finally got what might pass as a D+ in a Digital Photography class, but I'm working on it. The subject is not a particularly nice coin, but it was out and available. If anybody has any suggestions on how I can make improvements to the picture quality, then please let me know. There are some seriously talented photographers out here, and I'm sure that I could learn a lot from them. [attachment=:name]

Why I bought this Bust Half (Coin #5)

I promised I'd review the things that charge me up when it comes to choosing a coin and saying YES!, for the next ten coins I purchased. Here's #5, sorry, I'm falling behind. I'm going to cut and paste from my registry set entry and then make a summary commentary: 1810 50C Overton 102 R.2 The coins I'm most recently acquiring I've searched high and low for. The optimal 1810 would be one that is well struck. This one is characteristically poorly struck centrally, in fact, the left wing of t

Parting with My Collection

have been doing some thinking... Ok, first of all, I'm not parting with anything for a long while. I have just been thinking about that day in the future.... I have been re-hashing some thoughts recently after reading the journal entry by AEAGLE01...who is selling his #2 ranked Buffalo Nickel set at Heritage this month. As much as I enjoy numismatics-and it truly is a hobby foremost to me-the objects of our collecting endeavors have VALUE. When I see a fabulous set of buffalos like AEAGLE0

Now I'm a Panda fan too...

Clay, you sold me... :-) The pictures of those Panda coins have got me hooked. I have a small collection of odd and assorted non-US coins, mostly from states/entities that no longer exist, such as Rhodesia and The Straits Settlements. However, who could say no to such works of art. I just had to get myself one (two, actually), and I'm sure that I'll be getting more in the future. Thank you for introducing me to such beautiful coins... [attachment=:name]

Ready For More Trivia?

This is pretty fun The winner of this session will receive a small collection of Lincoln Cents. All 9 coins are from the Denver Mint. You will receive the 1973D through 1981D. They will be in 2x2 plastic flips. And as you all should know, 1981 was the last year copper was used in U.S. Pennies. O.K, now for the question, which has two parts. You must get both parts right. What was the smallest monetary unit issued by the United States? And from which date, to which date were they issued?

Reply to Bruce Willmore & picture

...the manual's can have small type can't they??? After reading Bruce's journal article, made me want to write another article myself. I can sympathize with him, as the manual to my digital camera has very small print also. And my 53 year old eyes can't see as well anymore either. But I picked up a tip out of mine the other day, on how to use the white balance control better. As proof to this, I submit the following pic of the Uncirculated San Francisco Mint commemorative I received today th

RE: Taking pictures of coins

Some people really do have great pictures! SOME DAY I'm going to get serious and set up a place to take amazing pictures of my pecious coins. Heck, most days I'm lucky to remember to get dressed before I go anywhere! Today, I received another Panada for my collection! I just think they are beautiful coins! [attachment=:name]

Taking pictures of coins

This is going to take some time... I just bought a Digital SLR camera for the purpose of being able to take decent photographs of my coins. It came with a manual about an inch and half thick, and is in print so small that I have problems reading it, even with my glasses on. And since I know absolutely nothing about photography, beyond pointing the camera and pressing the shutter, this will be quite a challenge. However, I have two things working in my favor. 1) I have a lot of batteries

AND THE WINNER IS

100%- EVERYONE GOT IT RIGHT! Out of all the correct entries, I chose one at random, and that winner is cho10. If you send me a physical address, or P.O. box, I will mail your coin. Thanks to everyone who responded, and I also learned some more about Colonel Edward Howland Robinson Green. He also owned all the inverted bi-plane 'Jenny' stamps.

TRIVIA A fellow member has a good idea, and I will get on board with it, being the adventurous type guy that I am. The winner will be drawn at random from winning entries. The winner will receive a 1900 V Nickel. I will notify winner Sunday Evening. OK, the question is: 5 1913 Liberty Head Nickels were owned by the son of Hetty Green, aka 'The Witch of Wall Street'. Can you name this gentleman? Have fun, and lets see who gets it.

In the absence of our trivia question from PMG...

I will, once again post a trivia question. Somebody needs to talk to the powers that be... we really want that free stuff...er... we really want to have interesting trivia! This question combines my two favorite areas, Star Trek and coins. The actor who portrayed Star Trek's Commodore Matt Decker had a great-grandfather that became Secretary of the Treasury and was subsequently portrayed on US currency. Who was that Secretary of the Treasury and what bill did he appear on? Winner will be se

Gold Type Set - In Progress!

My gold type set is coming along nicely! I longed for the day that I would purchase a gold coin. My first was a small 1/10 oz American Eagle. I graduated from that and bought a proof version. Now, check out my gold type set! Never did I dream that I would be able to obtain these coins, not in a million years. Much less a set of them! The one coin that I have that currently doesn't show up is a 1926 MS63 Saint graded by ANACS, that was purchased at the ANA show in Charlotte this year. My newe

7 coins back from NGC, 3 more off to NGC and 10 to NCS

I didn't do too bad on the one's that I got back.....Definitely not what I expected. Two were no-grades. The other five graded and didn't have any problems. This is what is surprising to me. One of the ones that didn't make it I thought for sure that it would grade and two of the ones that did grade I thought would be body bagged without question. This just reinforces that I am not as adept in the "Art" of grading that I would like to be. The ones that did grade were an 1894-S Morgan that grad

Capped Bust Quarter

What I Found I looked in the Red Book, and there is an example of what you have with a 1822 date. The pic of that coin looks similar to yours. It is a '.25c' over '.50c'. It looks like those errors are not exclusive to 1819. 1819 has 2 varieties; small 9, and large 9. Both list in redbook for $35.00 AG3, $85.00 G-4. Hope that helps a little.

Tryin something new --> Selling at a Flea Market

I have sold a coin or two on Ebay but I would not consider myself a "coin dealer" by any means... but I figured I would try setting up a table at the St Nicholas Flea Market in Latham, NY on Saturday May 19th (right next to Guptill's). The flea market usually has at least a hundred tables selling everything from World War II memorabilia to general garage sale type items. In the years that I have attended this event, I have only come across someone carrying coins one time. SO this is a bit

Does anyone know much about Bust Quarters?

I went to the coin shop a few days ago. I got there shortly after he purchased some items from a "walk in" and I went to the coin shop a few days ago. I got there shortly after he purchased some items from a "walk in" and as he usually does he pulled out some of the more interesting coins that he had recently acquired. Among them was this Bust Quarter. It is dated 1819 and appears to have a distinctly repunched denomination on the reverse. Early American/Bust coins are not my forte and I don

Finalized & Shipping

I am confused I just checked my coins, and two sets are finalized. Confused though. It may be a typo, but they have 2 1947D .50c in my list, and I am missing my 1947D nickel on the list. .05, .50 typo?? And my 1947D dime is listed as a 1946D dime. Another typo? Do typo's happen frequently? And if these are typos, will this information be on the slabs? Very interesting to find out. Anyway, what they listed was a bit disappointing. It is as follows: The only MS66's I got was the 1947P dime, an

2007 SAC ERRORS

What in the world is going on at NGC? OK, I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had run across an error on the reverse of 2007 Sac Dollars from the Philladelphia Mint and had sent them off (5) to be graded. I listed them as "errors" with a lengthy discussion about where on the coin to find the "error" (over the "E" in "E Pluribus Unum"). I have two whole rolls of these- and have not found any more- so I know that the error is, in fact, an error. It gets better- today they posted the images and

RE: Finalized & Shipping

I feel your pain. When I have this problem, I check to see if I had done everything NGC has asked when submitting an order. My next step is to contact NGC and tell them the problem. They get THOUSANDS of orders and will make mistakes, but give them a chance to correct it. They always have for me! This is my lastest PANDA! [attachment=:name]
