My 2015 Summary

Started a couple new sets this year I added close to 40 coins to my collection this year. Once gold got way down, I picked up several ounces worth in old gold. So I filled some gold type slots. Then I started a set of 'Silver Commemoratives 1892-1954' and bought 20 of the 50 in the set. I also started a 'Carson City Type Set'. As well as buying the coins for the only Modern sets I collect, Silver Eagle MS and PR. Harvey Claus bought me a Nikon D5300 DSLR so I will be slowly working to update

Took Sister and Friend Sightseeing To the Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite

Located on Lookout Mt, Colorado   There is One Coin in the Museum, a Morgan Silver DollarThis is, a not too good, photo of the only coin in the Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain, Colorado. Both Buffalo Bill and his wife are buried at the site west of Denver, overlooking the Denver Metro area. This Morgan, has a hard to read date, was shot thru by Buffalo Bill Cody. This is the best of the several shots I took of it as it was on a rotating display that allowed views of all angles of the co

Platinum is Now Higher Priced Than Gold

It has been upside down for a historic time period! Platinum historically costs more than gold. But for the last 2 years or so, this has not been the case. Gold during that period cost as much as a couple hundred dollars more than platinum. Today, platinum's price has exceeded the price of gold. Will it hold or fall back? New Metals for Coins?

An article in today's Denver Post says........ it is being researched. A link to the story: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/u-s-world/us-mint-testing-new-metals-to-make-coins-cheaper To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

What I miss on the "Total Coin Registry Points" page

The Total Coin Registry Points list used to show..... in the right most column of the grid, the date of last change in the users collection. It was interesting to see if the collectors around me, point-wise, were actively adding coins to their sets or not actively collecting and holding the coins or liquidating the collections. Maybe someone at NGC will read this and add it back in to the grid. The image is of my 2012 Alderney 5BP 100th Titanic Anniversary coin from the Royal Mint. Only 3

My 75th Anniversary set finally arrived!

It was shipped via USPS None of the tracking numbers seemed to work on either UPS or USPS sites. So I didn't know where the coins were. They were in transit for more than a week (at least it was longer than a week since I was notified of shipping) before showing up in my mail box. The shipping email failed to mention which carrier the shipping was thru. In the past, I have had either UPS delivery (sitting unprotected on my step) or via USPS and delivered into my mailbox (protected). Now th

Will my 75th Anniversary ASE Set ship today?

It shows my order as backordered until July 27 which is today! I hope to get an email stating that shipping happened today. Turns out NO! What are the chances of that? Very low! I hope to come home next week to find my set waiting for me on the step. I did receive an email on July 29 confirming shipment of my set. Today is July 31 and perhaps it will show up today but not likely. None of the tracking numbers seems to work at UPS so I can't follow it thru the system. To see old comments

If LJ Rambo is Right, My Prediction from a Couple Months Ago is Fullfilled

On 12/7/2011 I posted a S mint marked coin prediction for 2012! I saw this coming. We were being test marketed with this Struck in SF designated coin. The Mint was doing some market research and decided they could sell more Silver Eagles by issuing more varieties. I would not buy a (S) Struck in (no MM) knowing a S mint marked is coming unless NGC makes it a requirement for the set. This is the obverse of my 2012 ASE. MS69

As the 25th Anniversary Set Disappointment Fades..........

Only 2 Unique Coins! I am a Silver Eagle collector again! As the disappointment of not getting the set from the mint passes, set changes shown (1 coin per SE set) and grading costs (shipping costs especially) is all calculated, I have decided that buying the 2 unique coins to keep the full Silver Eagle proofs and mint state sets complete (MS69) for about $700 isn't too bad and will have won the final of the 2 (RP) this evening. Over time I may or may not pick off the individual other 25th

2012 Prediction

A 2012 S Mint Marked ASE! I believe the Mint was doing market research for the viability of another yearly Silver Eagle issue. I predict that the US Mint will issue a Business Strike (non-Proof) Silver Eagle with an S mint mark. Probably on burnished planchets much like the W Collectors Silver Eagle. You heard it here first if it happens, and is only MHO. Pictured is my MS62 $1 from 1856.

30th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set!

7 coin set- 75,000 to be minted This is a snarky post. Well, I guess right now I'm looking forward to the 30th Anniversary Set. My guess is a 7 coin set since the 20th was 3 coins and the 25th, 5 coins. I can only guess they will make it impossible for regular collectors to buy them so they'll just make 75,000 sets. I'll have to be more vigilant for this anniversary! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Will I still be a Silver Eagle Collector?

Probably depends on if my 25th Anniversary Set comes or not. I agree with the sentiments about the ordering process. IMO, the Mint should sell a set to each order from a different address, once they are all filled, then the multiples can be shipped. But I expect if I don't get my set from the Mint that I'll be done collecting graded Silver Eagles. I don't think I will be interested in paying the already graded prices. I ordered a single set probably 10 minutes later than the expected cut o

How I Use Points

It is just a part of my decision to buy or not. I use the points assigned to a coin and grade as a guide to rarity (I collect old coins mostly at this time). Along with populations graded by both NGC and PCGS, it helps me decide if what I am thinking of buying makes sense. It just a part of the collage of data I use. I will post a coin picture when I get home and have access to my images.

That's why I sold my Gold bullion!

Offered melt prices at a coin show! In reply to Sellers Beware- 2 summers ago I took my $5 PCGS graded Gold Buffalos (70's) to a coin show in Colorado Springs. I was offered $150 for each of the 1/10's. I laughed at them! I went home and listed them on eBay and sold them for $700+ in days.   Then I re-invested and bought graded old gold coins! I had $10, and $25 versions too, which also sold for a hefty profit. I claim my sales with the IRS every years too! You were being fed a meal o

Newest Acquisiton- An 1857 Quarter Eagle

AU-58 but it may be due for a crack out! I just bought and received the below NGC AU58 Liberty Quarter Eagle. Can you believe such a nice coin gets only 631 points? I think this one may actually have a chance at a higher grade.

My 1890 Liberty Half Eagle has landed!

It's in an OGH, but accurately graded! Here she is. Miss Liberty from 1890 on a half eagle! XF45 Again, only 4,240 minted of this little sweety! I appreciate the opportunity given to me to acquire this coin. So Lionel, here's to you! Not the best image I've taken but not too bad either.

NGC Has Been Very Responsive to the Issues with the Upgraded Site

I posted a couple of issues here and within 2 hours was contacted by NGC. Ironically, I am a software tester by trade (at this time in my career). So after I posted my comments Dena contacted me. She asked a few specific questions and then a few hous later I heard from her again. That some of the issues have been fixed or are being looked into on. I later reported a few more issues and they are working to resolve them too. So instead of person_without_enough_empathying about the change,

Site Update Doesn't Allow Scroll Right

Cant see all of the columns in Competitive Sets. No rt/lt scroll bar. I don't know where to send my problem but the new Competitive Sets area has an up/down scroll bar but not one to go left right. So far, I don't like this change. All of my sets were viewable at one time, now I have to scroll. IMHO, this is a step backward. Then when I saved this Journal, an error was thrown but the Journal posted anyway.

My Next Purchase, a Low Mintage Coin Will Be Tomorrow

I recently received an email from a Registry member offering me the coin! Recently, I received an email from a Registry member asking if I would be interested in an 1890 Half Eagle graded XF45 by PCGS as he was upgrading to a better grade. At first I was a bit wary of the offer, but as I conversed with the member, I became comfortable with the idea of the deal. So with my auctions closed on eBay and the hammer prices of my sales exceeds the $$ value of the 1890, tomorrow the deal will be com

Another Coin for My 1856 Mint Set

Also fits my Liberty Half Eagle set I recently purchased this 1856 AU55 NGC Liberty Half Eagle for less than half of the value of an AU58 version of the coin. So I decided it was worth the buy. Overall, a decent coin given its age and that it has circulated. Larger images are in the sets.

What should I do? UPDATED!

1868 S XF 45 NGC, IMO, obviously over-graded, should I keep it? Look at theses images of the coin. Tell me that this is a XF45! I think it is VF35! I paid XF money for it. I wonder how many times it has been sold and returned? I wonder if the seller is part of this community!? Take a look at the pics. Let me know what you think. XF or VF, keep it or send it back. Thanks. UPDATE: So after careful consideration, I decided to keep the coin. Thanks to all who gave me their advice!

Newest acquisition- 1856 Eagle

NGC Graded AU58 I recently purchased the below pictured 1856 Liberty Eagle $10 Gold piece. Graded AU58 by NGC. 60,490 were minted. Overall a very nice coin. I think it could come back MS if cracked out and resubmitted. AS always, a bigger version of the images are available in my sets. Both 1856 Mint Set and Gold Type Set.
