RE: SGS

I wonder if this might have some Collector's Value? Not.... I have a rather nice, not perfect, but very nice 2003-S Missouri Quarter, that wss graded PF70 by SGS. The grade isn't what I found interesting. What I found really found most fascinating about the coin is the holder says it is a Maine Quarter. I'd say that it might have some additional value as a curiosity, if it weren't for the fact that the holder is held together by a couple of pieces of gold tape... :-)

Do we really need other grading services......

PCGS and NGC that is it! Or not....... When you go buy a slabbed coin you always want it to be in NGC or PCGS holder. What people don't under is that if we only had two grading services then they would become backed up and over whelmed with coins, not that the process takes long enough because they want to give the coin the ride grade which is fine. But imagine how long it would take to to get your coins back. People always want only the top two, but what about the people that can't afford the

Really lame but...

I just started collecting and all that OK, I've been doing this only a few months, and have a decent grade on my Silver Eagles and such for the time I've been doing this. BUT I've also been collecting pocket change just as long and filling out those Littleton Coin Folders. Just filled out my first one! Yeah! The 1988 to 1998 Quarters I've got a few blank ones filled with Bicentaniel quarters, but that does not really count. Not bad, considering I've only been using pocket change,

Bought lottery tickets lately? I know all of you wanted to know so I found out for you. I purchased 15 SGS MS70 graded coins on Ebay, carefully took them out of their slabs, and submitted to NGC for grading. My thought was, that even if only one of these 1990's Silver Eagles came in at a 70 grade it would be worth it, right? The results are: of 15 coins graded SGS MS70, 10 came back NGC grade of MS69, 4 came back NGC grade MS68, and one came back in a body bag for "improper cleaning".

FATHER MAY NOT ALWAYS KNOW BEST!!

U.S. Savings Bonds vs. Morgan Dollars. I didn't collect coins as a kid. In fact, I didn't start collecting until my mid-20's. However, I can recall, in my grade school years, having an old brass still bank with arabic scenes engraved on the sides- camels, pyramids, date trees, etc. And, it was filled with, what I now know, were Morgan Dollars. To this day, I have no idea as to where they came from. But, I can remember, from time to time, Dad would bring out the bank; and I would dump out

Time to start shopping again...

Seller screwed me out of the coin. I've hated this week. A week of trying to get a seller to send me a coin I won at a nice price 3 weeks ago. I had to use PayPal today to force them to give me a refund. Now I get to start over trying to get another 2001 Silver American Eagle in a NGC holder graded MS 69. 3 Weeks of waiting and no coin! Oh well, I'll be able to buy another one within another day or two... Since some others have been discussing coin alterations, I offer the following penny. I

I fell off the wagon...

More coins to NGC for grading... We REALLY need a 12 step program here. Well... after watching my position rank fall 10 spots in one day... now down to 585, I decided to boost my score a bit and sent off 11 coins under the cross-over tier. 6 of the 11 are MS, as I think they will fare better in points than the proofs, as all of the coins are modern. Modern proofs have to reach that ultimate grade in order to receive points worth mentioning, whereas MS modern coins will fare better point-wise

re: Federal Crime

I could be wrong but... ... I think it's only a crime to deface US coinage and currency and then try to spend it. Otherwise, selling colorized Silver Eagles or Kennedy Halves would be illegal (and they advertise it on TV). Then again, I'm no expert in that field so don't take my word for it :-)

Federal Crime

Defacing U.S. Currency & Coin This federal law actually came about in 1883, when a deaf mute named Joshua Tatum hired a jeweler to gold plate a number of 'V' nickels to pass off as $5.00 gold pieces. He would never make a purchase for more than a nickel, but many people gave him change for a $5.00 coin. Once the federal Government discovered Tatums' little scheme, they halted mintage of 'V' nickels, and added the word 'cents' to the remaining coins to avoid any confusion in the future. Tha

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands' "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar

The United States Mint wants to alert consumers and the public about a new product being marketed by a private firm -- the National Collector's Mint, Inc. The National Collector's Mint, Inc. advertises this product as a "Freedom Tower Silver Dollar" originating from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and claims that it is a "legally authorized government issue" coin. On October 13, 2004, the New York Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order against the National Collecto

Hot from the United States Mint!! Fraudulent Presidential $1 Error Coins Being Sold

The United States Mint has recently learned that some individuals are grinding the rims of Presidential $1 Coins to remove the edge-incused inscriptions and then marketing these altered items as error coins. This practice not only exploits unwary consumers and collectors, but also is a Federal crime. The United States Mint recently announced that an undetermined number of George Washington Presidential $1 Coins were minted and issued without the required edge-incused inscriptions, "E Pluribus

ANACS & ICG

To allow or not allow, that is the question I think that ANACS is reputable enough to add, but hesitate at ICG. But then I am very picky when I invest in certified coins. For display purposes in here, I think to add additional grading services to the mix may confuse things for a while, but would be generally accepted. Maybe give the owners of coins slabbed by other graders a chance to display and compete for points. I wonder if they could have a seperate category for ALL slabbed coins, and the

More Photos

...I keep learning. I had said a couple of journals ago that I had a series of 3 journal entries to write. This is the third, but now I've decide to make it four. I'm still working on taking pictures of my coins. I'm finding out what needs to be done on different series of coins. For example, I'm learning that my Franklin FBL halves and Morgan dollars need a different approach than say a satin finished coin. But I keep listening, learning and experimenting, and hopefully when it's all said

That Feeling

The feeling you get when you finally... I have been collecting for about 4 years. By many standards that is still very new. There are several feeling that I get that make it so enjoyable. The feeling of finding a rare variety, the feeling of adding a needed coin or medal to the collection, or getting a bargin on a long awaited coin. Recently I obtained a coin that I have been eyeing several month. I finally found one that was at the price I would pay for it. It arrived today and I got one of t

SGS

I never got a response I was going to bid on a set of coins 'graded' (huh) by SGS. I sent them a question through EBay to the seller. I asked them how long they had been around, if they were registered with or affiliated with any reputable grading service or numanistic establishment. I wanted to check what kind of records they had of their grades. Sent the same e-mail to 4 different sellers. No reply from any. Sent again, still no reply. I mean do not get me wrong, they look nice in the holder

re: ICG and ANACS

Consistency is the key?? If consistency is your benchmark, then the most consistent TPG in the industry would have to be SGS, right? I mean, doesn't matter what you send them -- they ALWAYS come out either PF-69 or PF-70!! They're absolutely worthless PF-70's but they're consistent... :-D

re: Is it worth slabbing?

Depends I personally would slab uncommon/rare/valuable coins either to protect them from the elements or if I would want to sell them later. For instance, I would slab a 1979-S Type 2 (Clear S) Anthony Dollar but not a circulated 1960 Franklin dollar (unless I had a good reason to). I slab most, if not all, proofs and bullion.

ICG & Anacs

My nickels worth. Used to be two cents worth, but with the price of gas nowadays, it costs more just to give your opinion. I have mixed feelings about adding other TPG's to the registry. I completely agree with Bammer on allowing Anacs and ICG into the Signature Series. Bammer's argument and logic was well formed. Many oppose the addition of other TPG's for two main reasons. One being a lack of census and second being consistancy in grading. Census could be easily cured by both Anacs and IC

Reply to 'is it worth slabbing'?

Sometimes I think that unless your investing in your coins to sell in the far away future, they will be ok un-certified. I have alot of proof sets I am getting certified, but those are investments for the future. Even if I lose money now on the grading fee's, I win in the long run. The key coins in the 3 Merc Dime sets I have are certified, and even though I bought them as an investment, I love those sets, and will eventually have 3 certified sets, right down to the common 1945-P. It is only w
