I remember the first one... A must read

What a memory! I remember my very first coin when I was 5 years old. I arrived to the coin show and was nervous about it. But, everyone was very nice to me for the most part. I went to the tables with twenty dollars my dad gave me and didn't see anything that caught my eye yet. I earn my own money now for coins but when I was young my dad funded me. When went to about the tenth table I saw a standing liberty quarter(1930) in EF condition. I asked the guy how much and he said," for you little g

To certify?

Well, lets see....... You like the coin, it holds a sentimental value, as the mintage year is the year of your birth, (nice coin by the way), and it is a nice looking coin. May grade MS65 or better. All three of my 1947 Lincoln cents graded MS65 RED, and they didnt seem to have as much detail as your coin. Anyway, I would certify it. The only raw coins I have are 3 Merc dime sets, and the key coins are all certified. And the entire 3 sets will eventually be 100% certified one of these days, ev

A birth year error

My pretty Error Penny I got this coin over the internet. I bought because its a 1985 penny error. 1985 is my birth year, so i figured I buy it. Now I wanted to know does anyone think I should have it certified??

Re: Gold Buffalo's

Rumor has it! I've actually heard that this may be the last year for the Gold Buffalo, and that the mint may be making this coin in different version, ie, perhaps a knockoff of the Morgan Dollar or perhaps Indian Head cent. Only the mint knows for sure, but what better way to start folks buying than to change them every couple of years!

NEW FOCUS

Canada Aviation Series Commemoratives Now that I've completed the Canada Transportion Series, I'm looking to complete the Aviation Series and Canada Proof Commemorative Dollar sets. I have enjoyed learning more about our cousins to the north, their history is very much like ours! While the Transportation Series had just a mintage of 15,000 for each coin, the Aviation Series has up to 50,000 each. So it should be easy to finish!

Re: $50 Buffalo Gold Coins

I don't think they're going away completely. You're probably right to think that the gold buffalos will take a pretty good part of the Gold AEs market share but I kinda doubt that the Gold AEs will go away completely. There are quite a few people that like the gold eagles that will either stick with the eagle or collect both. Also, the gold buffalos are just that, gold. I'm not aware of any program to expand them into silver or platinum and until that happens the silver and platinum eagles wil

$50 Buffalo Gold Coins- Is going to take the American Eagles Spot!

What a nice coin. This coin is really nice and I think the coin will take over the spot of the American Eagles. People are getting tired of the Eagles and want something new. Why not bring back an old time favorite design. In 2006 it was just one coin. In 2007 the mint will make a 4 coin set. Orders will be pouring in at the mint and most orders probably won't be filled like in 2006. May be they will be smart enough and make a lot of them.

SET COMPLETED!

Another Great Job by NGC! This set is complete today with the addition of the 2003 HMCS BRAS D'OR coin added to my Canada Transportation Series#1. There are only 15,000 coins each in this series, this coin has only been graded by NGC 13 times with all PF-69 UC to date. NGC has been doing a great job for me, thanks!

The Presidental Dollars are Starting to get pathetic.... Part 2

Now the Adams dollar is getting ridiculous. The Adams dollar started off with only one "error" in the first three weeks. Now there are several and growing. When are people going to learn that these coins won't be worth anything in a couple of years and no body is going to care about them. When there are to may "errors" people won't know which ones to buy or which ones are rare. I fthe presidental dollars are going to be like this for every coin the fact of the matter is the mint won't have to

Re: Why do we put bad guys on coins?

Lack of options I think one flaw in your arguement is that you're assuming that the people of these countries decided to put them on the money. In the cases which I think you're refering to, the person in question wasn't a 'bad person' or even a leader, they were a ruling dictator. While alive a dictator gets what they want whether the people like it or not. 2nd, I would point out that our standard of a bad leader does not necessarily coincide with other peoples' definitions of a bad person,

To Grade or not to grade...Part 2!

These are the world famous "spy" coins. Seems our government thought the Canadians were using these coins to spy on us using nano technology embeded in these quarters. Turned out it was just a mesh used to prevent the red from rubbing off. No wonder we can't find Osama..too busy checking out our neighbors to the North!. I can't find a way to Value these. There is no website like PCGS price guide to see what high grade canadian Quarters sell for. Any thoughts on how I can find out the valu

To Grade or not to grade...That is the Question!

This has nothing to do with suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune....but everything to do with spending a fortune grading coins I shouldn't grade! I have gotten quite good at picking out some coins for grading...but the state quarters still elude me! My process for selecting coins to grade is a good one, with 1 exception. It requires my judgement! I'm posting a pic to ask for advice. does the area at the bottom of George's neck say "don't grade this it will be a MS63? OR I

RE: Why do we put bad guys on coins

Interesting theory, but can it be supported? This is an interesting theory, and if there are examples of countries that actually do this once these "bad people" are no longer in, or connected to, power, I'd love to know them. I think that'd be really fascinating knowledge for a dinner discussion. However, and simply speaking "off the cuff" without hard facts to back me up, I wouldn't think this to be the case. Does Uganda have a 2007 Idi Amin commemorative? I think not. Or, will there be a

Why do we put bad guys on coins?

Why do foriegn countries do it. The United States doesn't put bad and corrupt leaders on coins but Europeon and Asian countries do. Why would you do that? I think that the people are so afraid of these corrupt, bad people that they feel honor towards them. The bad guys might threaten to kill rebels so the people pretend to like him and after a while I think they start to like him. For the people to keep on the bad guys good side they put him on coins and paper money. I am sure there are alot

Re: Follow up on the 1907 High Relief St. Gaudens

Guy sold it but for... The guy saw the guy that he offered it to again and the guy asked how he did on selling the High Relief with all its problems. The guy said he sold it for melt. Another unwise move. The guy could have sold it to someone that doesn't have the means to go buy a good one and dramatically lower the price. Part of me feels bad for him because he probably needed the money and blew a shot at some money even if the coin was ruined I feel bad for the guy but maybe he should have

Why would you ruin a 1907 High Relief St. Gaudens if you knew what it was?

Someone put it in a claspe... A guy was at a coin show looking at coins when someone (a guy looking on the floor like him) offered him a 1907 High Relief St. Gaudens. But it was in a claspe and cleaned. The claspe made huge marks on the coin when the coin was removed from the claspe. The guy said he knew it was worth a lot of money but he wanted to make it look a little bit nicer so he cleaned it. Of course, my dad passed. People sometimes baffle me because of the stupid things they do. The gu

Re: Talk about embarassing

Patience and restraint prevents embarrassment. Websites can't think. I think that it is unfair to say that the site tries to think for you. While the site never says this explicitly (Though it probably should), by entering in the cert# for the coin you are making the statement that you own that coin, that you have it in your possession. I guess the assumption was made that you wouldn't know the cert# and coin type unless you owned the coin. They probably just didn't factor in that people would

I like albums as well!

Nearly 50 year old albums finally has coins in them. A couple of years ago I purchased an old Buffalo Nickel and Standing Liberty Quarter "Library of Coins" albums. The albums were made in the late 50's and 60's and were never used. It has been fun filling up the holes with VF to Unc. coins. I have received a lot of pleasure smashing PCGS, NGC, and ANACS, slabs to add the coins to the albums!!!

Re: Talk about embarassing

Looks freaky the first time... Entering a certificate number and finding it owned by someone else may seem strange a first. But it's happened to me before. Could usually be that someone sells the coin on ebay and forgets to remove it from his registry set. As far as the "research" is concerned -- NGC usually just sends an email to the owner and tells him/her that someone tried to enter the same certificate number into his registry set. It's happened to me before.

Lunch with Rich...

A Fish Tail Tale. Every once in a while, me and Rich meet up at the Fish Tail restaurant for a tasty bite and show and tell. Today, with bright sun blazing, we swapped our newest acquisitions for a brief visual inspection. As much as i liked hearing from Rich that my coins were "very, very nice", i got to admire and compliment him on some truly amazing gems. His Long Island has fantastic color and luster. The Washington-Carver looked like it was under water. His Maine truly deserves a star. Ye
