All My Franklins Are Imaged...

...and this is the last journal entry about photos for a while. I've had a productive 2 days off. All my Franklins are now imaged. Whew, I didn't know what I was getting into when I started all this. I think I can blame it on my insurance man, he's been bugging me for 20 years (yes I know, I procrastinate) to have pictures and inventory for my renter's insurance. So now I'm going to make him happy, as I've imaged probably 30 coins today alone. I keep learning. Even have images of a few proof

Trivia Answer...

Bridgeport, Connecticut Centennial Nobody ventured a guess in my trivia contest. I was thinking the prize might not have been worth the effort, but then I think any coin that is free is a good coin... and this was really nice too..oh well. Then I thought maybe the question was too hard, then I thought I am a real insufficiently_thoughtful_person and if I can think of the question ANYBODY could come up with the answer, so that wasn't the case... So... there is not a shortage of coins, cause I

keystone to the collection

New and favorite addition I have been looking for one of these for a while. I have seen alot of these and rejected many for one reason or another condition price what have you. This one though in a recent david lawrence auction just spoke to me it oozed with history.

Presidential Proof Set Pricing

Hysteria has been skewing the pricing for these sets. The Mint may not have done a very good job on this first set of proofs but wait...it will get better. If you receive spotted, scratched, dinged, or any other kind of blemished coins directly from the Mint...SEND THEM BACK. The Mint will get the message and the quality of the sets will improve markedly. Dealers who say in their ads that "thousands" of sets were submitted for grading and "no Proof 70s were returned" do so to create a bidd

What an Anniversary Gift

My wife is amazing. I am truly a lucky man... Today is our Anniversary. As we sat down to eat the meal that I prepared, she handed me a wrapped package. When I opened it, I discovered much to surprise a 20th Anniversary American Eagle Set. A woman that will tolerate what can be an expensive and consuming hobby like ours is one thing, but a woman that will actively participate in it, well.... That's something else. Now, I have to decide if I should submit them or not. The Reverse Proof Eagle

The reverse

why I bought it The reverse is why I bought the coin in the first place, to include in my sailing ship themed signature set. And in fairness the reverse looks better than before...although the 1 or 2 spots are still there they are lighter and some of the copper in the gilt coin now shows in the field and sails, giving the coin a handsome highlighting..just a bit disappointed in the obverse...thanks for bearing with me on back-to back entries but I wanted to record for my journal's sake a more

Returned From NCS

My SC$1 aka The Forgotten Coin is back this will be short, I finally got back my 1907 Jamestown Tercentarry Anniversary SC$1 from NCS. I am an optimist by nature-which may sound like a virtue-but in truth it tends to lead to alot of disappointments in life. My mind had visions of the black spots being removed from this coin and some more of its original luster blazing back through. Alas, I guess I need to be more realistic in my expectations. But this... If you are interested I posted a "bef

No trivia contest.. so it is up to me!!

P.T. Barnum was no sucker......so if he had lived long enough, he would have, certainly, had a sense of irony... That coins bearing his likeness were selling for upwards of 2 bucks EACH!!! Official US Mint coins!! What did this coin commemerate (besides Barnum) and when was it issued? Winner will be picked at random from all correct emails. Winner to receive a very nice 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel (raw). Be a sport and don't google this. Man!! I take all the fun out of it.. :-) Have f

Being SMART

I'll tell you...as I examine myself...as a collector...and look back, and look at myself now, I feel like I'm walking a tightrope. And maybe that's a good thing. Because the more people I interact with on the boards, and the more coins I examine, and the more dealers I deal with, the more and more I see my own frailties. I look at my mistakes...and gosh...I still make them. But at least I'm the one now who's figuring out WHAT'S a mistake and what is not. And basically, how you can only

Census Population

You can get a NGC Census population by clicking going to a particular coin set then clicking the coin description in "Slot Description" column. For example, go to your Presidential $1 Coins, Proof set - then on the coin descriptor, i.e. " 2007 S $1 George Washington", you will be taken to NGC Census report.

Re: Metal 9 "Bruce is right"

Not a reverend, but Mom really appreciated the note. I'd like to start off by saying that I'm very sorry if I gave you the idea that I'm a reverend but I'm not. I'm a 20 year old junior Chemical Engineering major a Texas A&M University. I use Revenant is a username because it suits my personality and that often gets shortened to "Rev" by others and myself to make typing easier. Maybe I need to go back to using Visitant? I had missed your "Bruce is right" Journal entry, until Mom showed me

re: Pricing on PF70 Presidential Dollars

Thanks, Augman! Your input is very much appreciated. Looks like you have an amazing collection, too... :-) First off, I'm curious, and I think that Dominator619 would be too, as to where you were able to find those Census numbers. Dominator's journal entry is what got me to examine the pricing on Presidential Dollars in the first place, because he said in his entry that the Census numbers weren't available. I looked as best as I know how for them myself, and found that I could not locate them

RE: Pricing for PF70 Presidential Dollars

I believe a coin's worth is primarily based on what you are willing to pay for it. But, I personally think the ebay bids you mentioned are way too high. I would wait at least a couple of months to see if the prices stabilize and for more PF70's to get out onto the market. Also, you may want to check out some of the auction sites, such as Teletrade or Heritage, to see what these coins are selling for.

Collection now in top 100

The Presidents pushed me into the top 100. With the addition of the Presidents to my sets my rank jumped to 97. I am focusing on 20th and 21 Century coins only. I know there are a lot area and specific coins missing, but I will continue to improve the collection as funds permit.

Pricing for PF70 Presidential Dollars

Perhaps someone with more knowledge on the subject than myself would care to chime in I was just perusing eBay, looking at the prices that PF70 Presidential Dollars are fetching, and I am just floored. There's currently 2-3 sets of all 4 2007-S Dollars graded PF70UC by NGC that has a current high bid of close to or over $1,100.00 Given that there's no census out there (at least on this site) for Presidential Dollars, how can these coins command that high a premium? Obviously, there's anoth

NGC Graded Proofs Presidents

My Proof Presidents came back from NGC. I sent 20 Proof Presidents (4 of each) to NGC for grading. I got 4 PF 70 (1 each of Washington, Adams, Jefferson & Madison) the rest were PF 69. To me the grading ration of PF70 to PF69 seems fair. I also sent some Presidents to the folks across the street and I am still waiting to see their verdict.

Merc Dime set

Might be sold I may have my Merc dime set sold , has a bid of $900.00 right now. It may go higher, but $900.00 is about what I need to get out of this one. Well, as some of you know, I had surgery for esophogial cancer in late Feb. Well, I was supposed to heal, and gain a bunch of weight, then start chemo and radiation treatments. The healing, though slow, is happening. But I can't seem to get my weight above 140 lbs (I'm 6' tall, and weighed 195 before this whole thing), so they want to start
