What is a good grade for a presidential dollar?

I am trying to decide whether to send my presidentials in for grading or just buy them graded off ebay So far there is no pop info on the presidentials. Most of mine do not look like they will grade high. Lucky if I have a 68, probably 67-65. Looks like the 65's are selling for less than the grading fees. I stopped buying state quarters because it is cheaper to buy them graded on ebay. I just bought the 2007 silver quarters set for $65 PCGS PR69DCAM. I can't grade them for that, much less

My Collecting Origins

I found my old Lincoln Cent album Like many people I have moved several times in my adult life. Some moves have been because of work, some to cut down on commute time, and even once for just a 3 year hiatus in my early 20's to south Florida for the heck of it. As a result of these moves I have boxes of stuff that have followed me in my travels and usually end up unopened in an attic, garage, basement or closet at my new location. I have been at my current address for over 10 years now and deci

IGC vs NGC

Past experiences? Alright, I really can't invest the amount of money that I would like to in my coins. A two hundred dollar purchase is pushing it, at least with the wife, and that would be enough for at least 6 months. Needless to say, I am always looking for the bargains. I'm always looking at auction sites and seeing if there is something I can afford. My primary "obsession" is the 1971 proof set. There was a 1971 PF69UCAM cent on HA and I had put 500 as a bid. I would ask for forgivn

Pictures and Grading

Will a picture help me pick out that perfect coin to send to NGC? I had received my 20th Anniversary Sets form the mint several months ago. I didn?t expect for them to arrive for another month. I thought that it was another order that I was waiting for from the mint to arrive, so I opened the box. How stupid could I be to expect a shipment form the mint to arrive 3 weeks earlier than their website stated. I?m not here to beat up the mint for early shipments, so I will get on with my story. I

Hoorah for Murphbuzzy

20th Anniversary Eagle Sets I agree completely with Murphbuzzy. You should open the sets to make sure the contents are as advertised. What happens if you send these in to be graded unopened and you get back 2 2006 pennies. Prove that you sent in an Eagle set. If you opened it, it will no longer be graded as an Anniversary set. If you did not open it, you have no proof. Are you telling me that no one else out there has gotten a damaged or incorrect order from the US Mint? Does NGC not re

Betts Medals

Any Other Betts Medal Collectors? I have recently started collecting betts medals. I was actual turned on to this series after purchasing the following coin from the John J. Ford Collection. It shows the British Victories of 1758 B-416 in bronze the pic is the reverse. I just cannot get enough of them! They are great and I very much enjoy the historical aspect of them as well. Am I the only one?

20th Anniversary Eagle Set

No NGC grade if box is opened? I can not believe that we can not get our coins graded as the set, "2oth Anniversary Silver Eagle" if the box was opened. How are we supposed to make sure the contents where to be what they where and to make sure they where in decent condition. Especially with all the hype about "OPENED" coins from their holders. So now I've will not send them in to be graded because they will come back as only ONR saying that it is part of the 20th Anniv set.....not fair.

TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS!

I Like Trains! My favorite is the The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. I first heard of this train when my favorite movie star, at that time (Audie Murphy) was in town promoting his new movie "Night Passage". I didn't get to see or ride this train until 1989! I fell in love with it! Since then, I've only been able to ride it one more time. Trains are like coins, they tell history!

NGC'S the GREATEST!!

Winners with no NGC graded coins!? After reviewing most of this past years winners of the annual registry awards, I noticed something peculiar. Many of the winners in their respective categories have zero NGC graded coins in their collections and yet, the folks at NGC were gracious enough to recognize them. I also noticed how many of these sets were winners at the PCGS registry site also. NGC..You guys are the hands down best! Is this a great country or what?

Taking the pictures..

has become one of my favorite parts of ... coin collecting. Coins have turned into a passion with me. I guess that is not so unusual when I consider who I'm talking to. But, I have always been a closet photographer and shooting coins to represent them in their best light is an art. It has take me months, but I think I do a great job. Once in a while I get a camera reflection off the coin... I'm working on that. I use a small Casio older 5 meg digital with a 510 mb memory chip. Although I hav

Mercury Dime Collection Well, I am out of the hospital after 16 hours of surgery for cancer. They said they got it all. I spent 8 days recuping in the hospital, and now have another 5 days at home so far. Very painful to get around much, but I have to try to work through the pain as much as possible. I am going to put my efforts on locating the rest of the Merc Dimes for my sons collection. Trying to get the best coins possible, and most have been bought on Ebay. I find myself buying doubles a

Coin Images for the Registry

I just can't get it right! I've been having "fun" trying to get quality images of my coins into the Registry. I'm not very satisfied. I've tried scanning them, photographing them in indirect sunlight, photographing them in artificial light, photographing and scanning with light and dark backgrounds . . . Nothing really comes out well. Some of you have incredible images. How do you do that? tsc

Re: No replies from NGC

I happen to think they are very nice and Professional I also have been collecting for a few years (50 plus) I also have three degrees (they do not make your IQ go up, only your ego) I am also a member of NGC and PCGS. Now on to my personal dealings with NGC, I think they are very professional, very nice people to talk to on the phone and quite accurate in answers to questions I have had. I do hope that we can all have such experiences with people we deal with from day to day. But the answe

20th Anniversary Silver Eagle set

WOW SOLD OUT FAST!! But I did get 2 sets from the U.S. Mint. As I was waiting for my 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets from the mint I was reading about how great these were going to be. When they did arrive I had to sign for them as usual at the Post office window. When the clerk brought the box to me she stated that the box was ripped open on the side and it had to be tape to keep what was in side there. The cardboard that the box was made of reminded me of the low quality cardboard t

Thinkin WAY too much about the New Presidential Dollars, are they all ERRORS!

The edge lettering is applied in a TOTALLY RANDOM way to the coin AFTER the coin is struck with the obverse and reverse dies. Since the edge lettering is applied on a COIN by COIN basis, does that mean that EVERY presidential dollar is an ERROR? Let me start by saying that I do not normally look very closely at the edge of a coin. Sure, if there is a BANG, or a really bad gouge I may notice but that is about as far as my interests go. Since the introduction of the new Washinton Dollar, I hav

Buying Online

BU, or not BU, that is the question... What I love about going to a coin store over buying coins online is that I can hold the coin in my hads, look it over, and purchase it without shipping fees or a Buyer's Premium. However, being in the middle of nowhere and not having access to any numismatic outlets, I turn to my computer. The disadvantage of buying online, or at least the one I will focus on for this post, is what the seller/dealer considers to be AU/BU/etc, and what I would see it as. I

The disenchanting I was interested in learning more about the famed numismatist Walter Breen. It seems that he loved pederasty just as much as colonial coinage. Kinda sad. I don't know if I can look at his books now in the same light.

Wavering on Presidential Dollars

Too much $$ for too little Although I collecto Modern Commemoratives ALMOST exlcusively, I do add interesting and appealing coins to my collection. I have never collected any error coins, but I was toying with the ideal of adding one or two of those smooth edge Washington Dollars to my cache. After looking at eBay and a number of other selling sites, I counted hundreds of error Washingtons for sale, at prices ranging up to $600.00 for the smooth edge ones. That price had increased by a fact
