Mr Lucky Bought His First Morgan's

Morgan 1884-O I bought my first roll of Morgan's a few weeks back for a tidy sum and when I finally took them out to look at them I got so excited as I started seeing Dots where the mint mark should be. Out of the twenty coins 15 have the same deficiency. I spent the night on the computer checking out information on them and boy did I learn a lot. You see I am new to coin collecting and I have never been so excited in a long time. The next step I guess is to get them graded and hopefully

RE: 20th Anniversary Eagles

Predertimed Grades? I think you may be right about PCGS and its seemingly predetermined grades for coins. I feel the Gold 20th Anniversary AE?s got the same treatment. With those it seems that there is an inordinate lack of regular proof 70?s graded by PCGS. This can skew prices for these coins and since PCGS sells coins, you may wonder who the beneficiary is? Just my opinion. NGC finally has completed grading my Silver AE?s and I was disappointed have a Rev Proof 68 and all the rest 69?s, bu

Thoughts re: MULTIPLE HOLDERS

Is Presentation Enhanced? I would appreciate any thoughts regarding NGC's Multiple Holders. I am considering the aesthetics/presentation value of putting each individual series of MODERN COMMEMORATIVES into their own multiple holder, where feasible. As an example: displaying the 2006 Old San Francisco Mint Proof and Mint State $5 gold coins in the same holder as the Proof and Mint State Silver Dollars. Likewise with the Jamestown, 2003 First Flight and so on. Of course, this wouldn't work

All Collecting Goals Are WORTHWHILE!

Collectors slighted by attitudes of the BIG MONEY folks. I have noticed a certain, shall we say "snobbery" (?) or arrogance in the attitudes of many dealers/collectors, especially those at coin shows. I have heard phrases like "What's the matter with you, can't you see it's a bargain at only $65,000!!" tossed about, as if most of us are millionaires. While my circumstances have improved over the years, NOTHING excites me like finding a worn Buffalo nickel in my change or a box full of old Linc

I agree with Yevrah about obscured sets

Obscured?? Why bother? I can understand obscured sets for purposes of security but..... obscuring the sets is a choice by the owners of the sets. If they choose to obscure their sets then they should not be able to compete in the awards. I truly enjoy looking at the sets that are ahead of me in the various categories and obscured sets deny me that pleasure. IF you choose to obscure your set, for whatever reason, you should be choosing to eliminate yourself from the annual awards for best se

Obscured sets

I don't get it! I just viewed a set, well sort of viewed, it was obscured. Interestingly it had images for all the coins in the obscured set. And I almost viewed them. Now, I can understand having the coins registered here for safety and identification and even imaged, but what is the point of having them in a set, ranked 1 in some cases, when no one can see ANYTHING about what the set is filled with (beyond total pts and % complete).   IMHO these sets should not be in "competition" wi

Got my Presidential Dollars today and I dont get what the criticisms are.

My Presidential Dollars are about the same Quality as the Sacagawea's That is to say...you are grateful to get a 67! ok, i get these coins are not high quality, but unlike the gold and silver coins of today, these are meant for circulation. I compare them to the 2005 bison nickels. lots of nicks and scratches with an occaisional gem. Isn't that what collecting is all about, finding the gem? It would be nice if they were like the ASE'S or the Jamestowns where we can submit 10 coins and get

RE: All Collecting Goals Are WORTHWHILE!

Can the collector control the addictive nature of coin collecting? Yes, all collecting goals are worthwhile. But the real question is how the collector deals with the "need to buy more and better" coins. Once a collection is started, if the collector does not lose interest, what does the collector do when the set is completed? Finish a set then stop? No, I would be willing to bet a nice coin from my collection, that a high % of collectors will move on to other sets and coin types. Then anot

Why put down any form of coin collecting?

Is it a hazzing ritual? Why do old time coin collectors seem to enjoy putting down other new collectors efforts? If someone can not afford a MS 67 Morgan but enjoys collecting new dollars (face value) who care's. I thought this was a hobby that any one could enjoy. I remember as a child collecting coins which has sparked many years of enjoyment. If I was starting to collect coins today after reading some of the hard line comments I would have changed my mind about coin collecting. By

re: Kjohn..spring came early

check the wording of your order status... check the wording of the order status under the shipping status page...I believe that you will find that like mine it states that "your order request has been proccessed" just means that they got the order on the books. If you look at the bottom, you'll probably find that there is no charges listed...spring is still a ways off, I'm sorry to say.....dean

TO ALL WHO HELPED ME WITH MY PICS

I asked for a little help with getting decent pics of my coins and the response has been overwhelming. I have received about a dozen e-mails with tips suggestions and links to threads helping me to get the most out of what I currently have. I asked if I need a scanner or a camera: This is a collective summary of my perspective on what I read? It seems scanners are the easiest to use and give great pics but have no ?pop? and leave any Luster behind. Cameras on the other hand are a lot more wo

Why I bought this Connecticut Copper (coin #3) edited to include population data

I'm up to 3 out of 10 for giving the reasons why I purchased this (third out of ten) coin.   I just edited this entry to include population data which was a determinant that influenced my buying this coin.Firstly, I'm working on a Colonial type set and could use a 1786 Connecticut Copper. But there are so many slots that could be filled for Connecticut, and I doubt I'd ever fill them all, so why this particular coin?2. The coin is almost impossible to find without significant corrosion, and th

How do I get great pics?

This site has a few collections with incredible pics of the coins. Some of these pics along with my fasination with history drove my interest in collecting. I have tried just about every angle and light combination with my digital camera buy if I get too close to a coin the image becomes blurry. I have heard about people using scanners. If a scanner is the right route, I will only be using it for coins so I would like to get the right one (cost pending). Any input would be appreciated. T

Presidential Dollars

Lets All Be Patient We should all stop hunting for good examples from these rolls It's just a waste of time and money! If we want a good collectible examples of these dollars, lets just hold out for the Proofs and this years Mint Set ( lets hope they will be in it) Maybe they will grade MS-?? instead of BU's "LET'S CROSS OUR FINGERS"

Re: How do I get great pics?

The NGC discussion board has a section entitled What You Need To Know, and in there, one of the members compiled links to most of the previous posts pertaining to photographing your coins. I think you'll find the answers to most questions over there. It's helped me a lot.

Presidential Dollars

Mr Thompson, You can have mine Sir. Couldn't help but respond to Mr Thompson's plight regarding being unable to obtain the coveted "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE" Presidential Dollar. You are more than welcome to have mine. There on there way back to Shop at Home TV. Unless you live across the street from the mint or can circumvent the release date such as the TV show can, you cannot get First Day Issue coins. The TV show had these coins in their possession, graded by NGC, and available for sale on 0

Why pay a premium for regular coins?

The mint charges "A MINT" for rolls of the new dollars... Not to mention all the other coins they sell direct. When you purchase coins direct from the mint, you are getting the same business strikes everybody else is going to get, only you get them first, and at a much higher price. I was not too interested in getting a "First Day" holder or any of that other hoop-ala. I just wanted some nice coins, without breaking MY bank. Today I went to my local bank and bought a roll of the denver dol
