92 coins in the 09 Mint set?

Okay, I plan to put together a set for 08 in honor of my new grand child due in June. But this will be my last modern set. 4 new designs for the penny from both mints 1 nickel both mints 1 dime both mints 6 quarters both mints 1 half both mints 5 dollars both mints, and if you count them like they do at PCGS you have the A and B sides of the edge incusion. Lets get the calculator out .... mmmmmm That is 36 SMS coins and 36 Business strikes if you don't count the A and B sides. If

SMS and Business Strikes

I submit a lot of my own coins and this is what I have discovered. I look through about 1 to 2 thousand coins to find my Business Strike submissions. I can dismiss about 3/4 of the coins within a second of looking at them. The remaining coins are mostly ms64 with a few ms65's mixed in. When I come across, what I consider to be, a ms66 or better I put them aside. Out of $1000 worth of quarters I am lucky to find a roll of coins to put aside. Since 2005 I have been able to look through 10 or 2

Current US Mint Offerings

I consider myself a "modern" coin collector for the most part. As many have noted before me, the current offering by the US mint is beyond the pocketbooks of your average joe. That in and of itself is not what disturbs me the most. What really disturbs me is the lack of artistry, craftmanship and beauty that defined so many of the coins from the early part of the 20th century. The presidential dollars are downright ugly. They have almost no relief, the designs are tired and dull, the Busin

Thinkin WAY too much about the New Presidential Dollars, are they all ERRORS!

The edge lettering is applied in a TOTALLY RANDOM way to the coin AFTER the coin is struck with the obverse and reverse dies. Since the edge lettering is applied on a COIN by COIN basis, does that mean that EVERY presidential dollar is an ERROR? Let me start by saying that I do not normally look very closely at the edge of a coin. Sure, if there is a BANG, or a really bad gouge I may notice but that is about as far as my interests go. Since the introduction of the new Washinton Dollar, I hav

The cost of principal

I have heard the words honor and ethical bandied about on the chat boards now and again.   These words mean more to some than others, and different things to different people.I have heard it said that history is written by the victors. The british might agree, if they had to sit through our history classes and listen to us go on and on about men they consider traitors against the crown. The fact is, had the war of independence gone the other way, that is EXACTLY how we would be reading and thin

The New Godless Dollars - Blank edge

I've bought a few of these and am hoping there will be a way to tell the philly mint no edge coins from the Denver mint no edge coins. I am a little surprised to see this kind of error on a US coin. The inscription is, after all, required by law to be on the coin. When these coins first came out I was really disapointed. I had waited on line to receive them on the first day, and after looking at over 500 of them and not finding a single coin I thought would grade MS66 I made the choice not t

It wasn't the deadline that stopped me!

It was the coins! After looking at 20 rolls of Washington P dollars from the new mint release, and listening to others that had opened another 60 to 70 rolls I came to the conclusion that it was not worth the bother to slab a bunch of weakly struck, banged up coins. I will continue to look for a quality coin, but now I expect to be looking for a much longer time. Having a little blurb on the label that says this coin was a first release, should have meant the best struck and nicest coins the

Hopefully George is not as bad as he looks right now!

Just as a test I took two of the new dollars and tried to bang them together as hard as I could to see what would happen. It hardly made a mark on the coin. I then took a HAMMER and hammered one coin into the other. I still could not reproduce the marks on the coins in my roll. This can only mean one thing, these marks are being caused by equipment at the mint and at the bagger. Since I have seen marks like these on coins I bought in mint bags from the mint, I can only conclude there is equipmen

I just looked through 10 rolls of the new dollars

The mint was selling them in Grand Central Apparently rolled by N.F String and Son. Blue type, White Background and Red Stripes. Wow, not a single MS66 in the whole bunch, may not have been any MS65s if they were tough on the grading. I guess I will need to go trough another 10. Hoping to find something worth sending in. Just to clarify, my previous post about ratios of NGC to PCGS was based on the ratio of NGC and PCGS percentages at MS69. Example, if NGC graded 1% at MS69 and PCGS gr

NGC vs PCGS - The Facts of the Stats.

This may be hard to swallow, but you are 10X more likely to get a MS69 on a North Dakota P mint marked Statehood quarter at PCGS than you are at NGC. In fact here are the ratio's for the REST OF THE statehood Quarters: Philly Nevada 2X more MS69's Nebraska 4X more MS69's Colorado 7X more MS69's N. Dakota 10X more MS69's S. Presidential series and the SMS dilemma

Coin Collecting, The hobby of Kings. This post includes a list of the 128 coins the mint will (most likely) release this year. All these new rolls are comming out, but is it worth looking through rolls when all the really high grade coins are going to be in the mint sets? I know the BS coins from the 60's are worth plenty now compared to the High Grade SMS coins of that day, but I think those SMS coins are WAY easier to tell apart from the Business strikes than todays SMS coins are. I know this has nothing to do with coins, but then again maybe it does.

In NYC a legislator has submitted a bill that would make it a crime to walk across streets while listening to an iPod. About the same time I heard this they were also talking about a fellow who, while defending his family from attack, had accidentally killed the assailant (with his bare hands) - and was being charged with MURDER. In the same report they went on to say that people who take the bus back and forth to work will have to submitt to random searches before they will be allowed to g

Parsippany Coin Show

Nice crowd for a SuperBowl Weekend! As usual, it was shoulder to shoulder at 9AM when I showed up. There were a few "missing" vendors and a few that I had not seen for a month or two. A nice selection of raw and slabbed coins. I had forgotton the bag with the coins I wanted to trade and only had $140 to spend. I spent an hour or two looking at raw 'semi-modern" coins in the hope of finding something I might want to send in for my birthyear mint sets. This was not to be on this trip. I did ho

Parsipany Coin Show this weekend

Huge monthly coin show I have a few new coin friends, and I will be looking out for special coins that they might be interested in. I do like to trade coins, if you hadn't guessed. My main focus this month will be on my raw buffalo collection. But I will be bringing a couple of PF70 reverse silver proofs and a few other coins to sell. My birthday was the other day and my wedding anniversary is about the same time ( hope I remembered the right day this year ), do ya think my wife would appr

When did the Box the mint uses to send you your coin, become so valuable? I mean, I can kinda see it when they certify the case with the coin like they do with some morgans and Ikes, not really, I am just trying not to offend the people who claim to see the emperors clothes :0 I know this is a hobby, and as such we, and the companies that promote our hobby, can assign any value they want to anything they want. Afterall, why else would a d mintmark on a 1916 Mercury dime make it worth so much

But it won't be one of my registry sets this month... Monthly Coin show this month Coincides with my birthday and I will be going to the parsipany coin show to fill some holes in my Dansco Buffalo collection. I have one of the two pages filled (except for the 37 3 legger) and only need about 2/3's of the D and S on the first page to finish it off. I have tried to keep my set filled with coins that have complete and full dates and rims. Many are AU and several are BU. I sent in one of the 193

Polish 1925 20 Zl

Received the coin back this weekend. Body Bagged as not genuine. This leaves me with a lot of questions. I don't know if the coin is made of gold or is gold plated or something else, In fact, I don't know anything other than the expert an NGC does not think the coin is genuine. I wonder why, for the $30, we don't get a little more information. I am sure that when a coin is not genuine there is some simple explaination like, "Not Gold", "Wrong Weight", "Forged Die" etc... In order to make t

Polish 1925 20 Zl, was a gift this Xmas from my Mother in Law.

Ngc grade: Not Genuine It turns out the coin she carried here from poland 35 years ago has been determined to be not genuine. She gave it to me as a cherished treasure she had been waiting to pass down. Now I feel as though I need to replace the fake coin with a real coin. I saw one graded by NGC just last week on ebay for about $350. I can only hope and wait that I see another in time to purchase it and get it delivered before she remembers to ask me about the grade the coin received w

I was wondering, does anyone else keep 3x5 cards of the coins they need in their wallet?

Slabbed coins are cool, but I also love my raw buffalo and Merc collections. I am starting on my second set of raw mercs (not including the 41 overdates and the 16d). I went to my local antique dealer and bought the coins I THOUGHT I needed, only to get home and discover I duplicated a bunch of coins I didn't need and only bought one of the coins I did need. This last weekend at the coin show I saw at least 1/2 doz Beautiful buffalo nickels, but was afraid to buy, because I couldn't remembe

Mmmmmm, coin shows as a teenage dating venue? I had talked my friend into going to the Parsipany, NJ coin show. We were to meet at the Jefferson Diner at 9AM. As Usual I got there right on time and he showed up a few minutes later. To my surprise he brought his son along, who in turn brought his girlfriend ... Any hoo, we arrived at the coin show around 9:30 and immediately went to buy our supplies. I picked up a bunch of 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 Vinyl flips and a bunch of 2x2s for halves and he picked

More 2006 coins for the KDB set

The first of what will likely be many submissions of 2006 coins has just arrived at NGC. Even though I was planing on starting a 2007 Birthyear set this year ( she wasn't due till the end of the month after all) The fact that my grandaughter was born a year (sort of) early makes me glad that I ordered a few of the 2006 20th Anniversary Silver sets. Lucky Me, as these sets have already doubled in price. I have sent in a few of each to be graded, along with a few SMS coins from mint sets that

Parsipany Coin Show

This sunday I go on my monthly pilgrimage to the Parsipany Coin show. The parsipany coin show is the first sunday of every month. Since I started going there about a year ago I have only missed one or two shows. The first time I went, I was overwhelmed by all the coins and bodies. The second time I went with my wife and daughter to buy coins for my typeset. In hindsight I REALLY should have bought that beautiful Barber half for $650 instead of the lesser coins i came away with that day. Ov

Can you guess the score of a 1 of 1 kennedy half?

I just put the first Business Strike coin into my 2006 KDB Business Strike Mint Set . My granddaugters set now has the only Kennedy Half graded PL so far for 2006. One of only a few kennedys ever graded PL. If you look at my set: 2006 Mint Sets: KDB Business Strikes You will see that the score for this coin is zero. To be fair, across the street at PCGS they are having trouble recognizing regular 2006 issues in their registry, and they don't even have a 2006 mint set in their regis

Holiday Coins

I told my 12 day old grand daughter about the new collection I started for her, but she was more interested in looking out the window. As I wrote in my last entry. I Just started a 2006 mint set for my first grand-daughter. Several people here wrote and offered me their congrats. One member even offered to send a few coins to help out! I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and help with my newest set! Before we went to visit my new grand-daughter we went to visit my mother-in-law. M

The best laid plans ...

My daughter was due the end of January. This was going to be my first Grandchild. I had plans to look through thousands of coins as they were released from the mint in persuit of the finest set I could submit and assemble for her birthyear set. This was going to be a family affair, with everyone chipping in time to look through coins and join in the hunt. I received a call two weeks ago that the baby was in trouble and my daughter was going into the hospital - 8 weeks early. last Monday they
