Presidential series and the SMS dilemma

Coin Collecting, The hobby of Kings. This post includes a list of the 128 coins the mint will (most likely) release this year.

All these new rolls are comming out, but is it worth looking through rolls when all the really high grade coins are going to be in the mint sets?

I know the BS coins from the 60's are worth plenty now compared to the High Grade SMS coins of that day, but I think those SMS coins are WAY easier to tell apart from the Business strikes than todays SMS coins are.

Modern SMS coins are getting into MS slabs, that is a fact and I have at least 2 or 3 examples to prove that fact. I wonder if they are "Mechanical Errors" or just plain old mistakes. I have been told that the mint uses SMS dies for regular business strikes, so how can ANYONE tell the difference between a "Satin Finish" Mint Set coin or a "Satin Finish" BS?

At first I was thinking that I would try to keep a set of both. I am re-thinking this now.

The REAL problem for me is the joy of the hunt. I can look through thousands of regular bank issued bank rolls and it does not cost me a dime. Mint sets, however can put a serious dent in your wallet if you need to look through hundreds to find that "perfect coin".

One of the joys of my childhood was going to the bank and "buying" rolls of pennies and dimes so I could look for the Merc's and the wheatbacks from the teens. Oops did I just give away my age? Yea they were still in circulation when I was old enough to take an interest in coins.

The SMS coinage takes some of that joy away. In the 60's it was intended to have that purpose, today they are hoping to have the opposite effect (I think?)

If you look at the current mint offering for this year, you are looking at around $20,000 for a full years set of all the different bullion, Commems and coins.

I guess I should have read the sign at the doorway before I stepped in .....
