New Pestilence Dollars
I bought my smooth edge already...
The number of varieties of errors already surfacing indicates there are some real problems in the production process. Unless the mint intends to put out a shoddy product (which given some of its other offerings, may be true), it will have to seriously revamp the $1 process. this would have the theoretical consequence of reducing the number of errors.
as for what errors i would pick up, and how aggressively, here is my two cents, well, actually, my two bucks. if past trends hold, dropped lettering is an interesting variety, but they tend not to attract so much attention. the "upside down" variety is the product of a relatively random process, so that there should be relatively close numbers of ups and downs (i have one of each, but i sure would not pay any premium for it). the doubled struck edges look promising, but the one that has my attention (and my $80), is the plain edge. the novelty of a coin without a date, mintmark, or mottoes in itself should demand a certain numismatic status--if anyone out there knows, would this be the first U.S. coin minted (and released) for general circulation without all of these elements?
i hope this helps.
