Clawing Back Into the Game

Still trying...HARD Hey folks, long time no talk. I have added a whopping three coins to my sets in the past week. That's three more than I have in a year. Economy still sucks for me but I am adding a few here and there. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Sets

Who shot, who scored and who threw up an airball? So, for the low low price of $300 one had the opportunity to purchase the 25th Anniversary Set of Silver Eagles from our beloved US Mint. That is, of course, if you had the direct dial number to one of your close friends who works at the Mint. I loved the part where a knucklehead at the Mint said, whoops sorry, we STILL have not upgraded our programs so if you missed out tough .....BUT we will get it ironed out next time. Didn't this hap

1954-S Jefferson Nickel MS-67 Pop 15 None Higher

OMG when will people STOP BUYING THE LABEL????? http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3033&lot=1367 First No I am not encouraging anyone to purchase this nor would any respectable collector. Since this site has respectable collectors only (at least in my opinion) we are not at risk of someone buying this. Good Lord have mercy when will people stop and say MS-67 according to whom?

Tired of Me Yet?

This economy is great....or is it? I read Hunter's Gold post and wondered if the individual from whom he purchased the set was a friend of mine from right here in the Collectors Society home. I strongly suspect he was. Hunter, was to honor one of our fellow collectors by posting such a nice piece. I think it is true of pretty much everyone on the board that we collect for many reasons, only one of which is preservation of history. Nice job mate! Speaking of history, as some of you know I

Climbing out of the Abyss

Well now my friends, well now (what movie as that from?) Red Dawn It is with great pleasure that I can announce effective Monday the 22nd that the economic recovery has finally hit my household. After 2 and 1/2 years of being way under-employed, thankfully employed but unable to keep my entire stash of silver (about 20 pounds) which I had to sell while Silver was at $13, I am returning to the land of the living...collector that is. Believe me, I will be taking it slow at first, I have a ton

Well Trying Again

It is so nice to jump back in, although only half a pinkie toe deep Nice to see the same faces around with the same dedication to their lifelong pursuit. I have recently purchased a couple of NGC Lincolns (2009) only MS-66 which rankles the heck out of me BUT it is better than nothing which is the alternative. Who knows where the wind might next blow but for now, I remain an avid, although mostly inactive. Great job to all of you who continue your pursuit in your passion. I hope to be able

HI Everyone

Missed me? I missed you, seriously Howdy all, Well things are satill crappy $ wise in California HOWEVER things are looking up. I seem to have weathered to storm to the best of my ability and still have salvaged some semblance of a collection. I sold off all my silver bullion and rolls of Silver Eagles, and thousands of coins but still have a few thousand left. It looks like 2010 may be a very exciting year in my household and perhaps I may even be able to add to my collection. I ho

I'm Baaaaaack

First purchase in over a year, not a big deal, but one to add to the registry My good friends of the Society. While the financial situation in my household has stagnated (hasn't gotten much worse or much better), I was able to grab a coin on Heritage Last night. I have long been a fan of the Lincoln Series and even more so with the neat new pennies. Along with that followed the Jefferson Nickel Series, somthing I have really enjoyed putting together and have not had to sell (and hopefully w

Peace be with you

May the Lord bless you and keep you I still own my Lincoln Pennys, my beloved nickels. My Commemorative Set valued at over $5,000 just sold for $1,600. Wow, talk about another dose of reality. This site is not about coin selling, that is correct; however I would like all to remember the name of this site the Collector's Society. Society requires an ability of a number of individuals to formulate rules, designate responsibilities and formulate a means for communicating in a respectful, al

4/26/09 Teletrade

One a more a time OK everyone, get ramped up PLEASE. Teletrade's Auction on 4/26 has about 300 of my coins in it. Most of the modern silver commems and half of the modern gold commems are mine (soon to be yours). I need to maximize the return on these coins. They are my pride and joy but, I need to keep a roof overhead and food in the kid's mouths. Go Large por favor

Teletrade Auction on 4/26/09

Help a brother out Well, my friends, as many of you know and for those of you who don't, this financial meltdown has caused me and my family a tremendous hardship. It is getting difficult to pay the mortgage and some bills are going unpaid. I held on as long as possible but the time has come. Almost all of my collection is being auctioned off on 4/26/09. If you need ANY modern commemoratives silver or gold, they'll be there this weekend. Additionally, literally 650 of the coins you see at

Your Sales Thoughts

First thing first, I will not sell anything to anyone as a result of this posting. We don't want to revisit that issue same as a few years ago, right Amy? By the way isn't Amy the best? Congrats to all who continue to have an outstanding opportunity to continue to build your collections in these difficult times. I find myself a touch jealous and extraordinarily sad. I was never a top 3 guy except in a few peripheral areas that really anyone could be, like Modern Proof Set 21st Century, and

2009, The Bicentennial Of Lincoln's Birth

Does anyone know how to get BU rolls pronto? I have been searching for years how one gets the rolls of new Lincolns when they come out. My obsession is more potent this year than those in years past. I always have had to get them from the secondary market and I don't really mind paying the extra $3 or whatever per roll. This year I plan to stock up on a tone of these pennies. Anyone have any ideas or connections. It appears that the Mint will not be offerring these. Any help you may be a

Beware of the USPS (A Sincere Warning)

The ultimate nightmare for a small scale seller in tough economic times. This is a genuine warning for all of you who are shipping things via the USPS. Here's the scenario: I had a rather nice gentleman offer relatively fair prices for coins I have to sell, again due to finances. He offerred me what amounts to a break even price on several coins. Total value $1,111.00. I stayed home from work, shipped via Priority Mail, with insurance and signature confirmation. I handed the package to

May 2009 Bring You Joy, Success, Prosperity, The Ultimate Coin, Happiness and Contentment

With 2008 behind us, it can hardly goe any more sideways. I feel very fortunate to continue to be a part of this community. We are a special group of folks. Many of us are chastised by those who are unfamiliar with the intricacies of coin collecting. Many people are also unaware of the beauty of the things we cherish. Whatever your pleasure is, at least you have one (as do I). That's saying a lot more than what others can. We set goals for ourselves; goals to pursue within our means, occ

Oh My God (dramatic pause)...........................................

The mind screw of the Century (21st Century Type Set Proof Only that is) So I am reading what Jackson (I think wrote) about the Registry and good luck, etc. I know you all get tired of hearing whiners like me BUT..........................I was just looking through the various sets I have to see where they are comapartively when I come across the 21st Century Proof Type Set, a wussy category for sure, but one in which I received a lovely certificate from NGC recognizing that perfection (in the

Alright so I broke them out of holders I break 4 coins out of holders. It's my thought that grading standards are loosening up and higher grades are pretty likely (see Bust Half Dollar previous AU-58 now PF-63 (what the hell is that all about). I send in a 1909-S VDB graded XF-40, a 1909-S VDB graded VF-20 a 1909-S graded VG-10 and a 1922 STRONG reverse. The time has finally come

It;s been a great run for sure. About 6 years ago I got back into coin collecting. My initial goal was to fill in the Dansco Books just like I had wanted to when I was a kid, like my father before me and my brothers. Aftr a few years, I began to focus on nicer looking coins and onto graded coins. I have obtained over 1,000 graded coins and have proudly built some of the nicer registry sets in the world. Unfortunately, due to the economy and other considerations I have been forced to revert

I am with you Jackson, Goodbye to ebay from me as well.

A Message to EBAY Corporate Offices It used to be fun. I would buy so many things from ebay auctions, I sold quite a lot for a few years too. Then the bean counters and corporate nutbags got ahold of the reigns. First the percentages went up, then buy it now with really ridiculous listing fees and a HUGE post sale percentage. A few months ago a "new and improved" fee structure for power sellers who could get up to 20% off of our ebay fees if we met certain criteria which we, of course, cou

Thanks to so many of you!

Yep, I'm back (on my feet or at least getting there) It has been a good long while since I have been able to write anything to you great folks out there. Several of you have followed what's been going on personally in my life. I have been out of work for 4 months and have had to sell a rather sizeable quantity of Silver to make ends meet. Sadly I also had to give up (temporarily) on my 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter. I had paid a seller over $1,000 towards the purchase price and walked away

The end is rapidly approaching

Two maybe three more months and I'm done. Well, I did one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my coin collecting life. I sold my partial interest (had been making payments) on a 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter. It's funny how life can change at the drop of a hat. In my former job, all I had to do was work there one more month and she would have come home with me. Only a PCGS G-4 but it was a gorgeous G-4 to me. I couldn't have cared less if the thing was a MS-67 or a F-2, it w

Another kudos to Amy at NGC and my 1916-D Mercury

How did that happen so fast? OK, so I I submit a PCGS graded coin, an AG-3 1916-D Mercury Dime. I know it's only an AG-3 but it is THE KEY DATE. The point total assigned was "3". I shot off an email to Amy and let her know that I thought it rather odd that a 1916-D of any sort would garner a rating of 3. I asked if NGC would consider doing a score correction. Now, I know most of you are reading this saying exactly what I would say....waaaa, it's not about the points. I know, but, it's

Crossing over to the dark side

PCGS versus NGC Wow! First of all, I want to preface the following with this statement, I love NGC and the work they do. I also reognize that they grade a ton more coins than PCGS. About half of my coins are graded by NGC and the other half by PCGS. This is not meant to bash NGC in any way. With that said: As some of you may have read awhile back I sent in 400 Nickels in a bulk submission to NGC. All were in the original rolls issued by the Mint from the Mint. It took about 90 day

NGC Finally Comes Through

I continue to remind myself how much of a butthead I can be so often. I recently dropped a bomb, sharing my frustration with my fellow collectors (you fine folks) about a masive submission to NGC under their bulk grading program. It really is a great program, just frustrating for s fairly high strung person such as myself. As most, if not all of you know, if one is a dealer (maybe a member of collectors society or the ANA) one can submit a ton of coins (minimum 100 all of the same type (ie J

Ont the road back?

It appears things may be turning around. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Many of you responded to a post I put up about a month ago. Without going into to muc details, my love of collecting coins and my even more belowed collection was (and still is to a significant degree) at serious risk due to a massive change in my family's finanical position. The reaponse I received was both heartwarming, humbling and though provoking. Heartwarming in a way that several of you who I have exchanged e
