Finished !!!

completed a set..unbelievable I just love coins for various reasons..their art, history, design, value, and sometimes just because they are very shiny it seems. Anyhow, I have trouble finishing sets because I will get a chance to acquire a nice coin that does not fit one of the sets I am building and then I go off on a tangent and start collecting that new series. Well I know it's not a large valued set, but I am pleased to finally add the final coin to my France 20 Gold Francs Marianne/Rooste

GOLD!

BUY OR SELL? I HAVE JUST SCRATCHED THE SURFACE OF A MOSTLY "NUMISMATIC" GOLD INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO AND AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE RISING PRICE OF GOLD WHICH TODAY IS AT $635.00 AN OZ. I AM NOT EVEN CONCERNED WITH THE BULLIN VALUE OF DOUBLE EAGLES, BUT FEEL THEY SHOULD BE PLACED IN A DIFFERENT ARENA OF AN AGGRESSIVE BUY AND SELL ATTITUDE. I THINK MOST OF US UNDERSTAND THAT GOLD WILL TAKE THE "ONE STEP UP, TWO STEPS BACK" CLIMB FOR A VERY LONG TIME, ESPECIALLY SINCE OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES ARE NO

Parsipany Coin Show

This sunday I go on my monthly pilgrimage to the Parsipany Coin show. The parsipany coin show is the first sunday of every month. Since I started going there about a year ago I have only missed one or two shows. The first time I went, I was overwhelmed by all the coins and bodies. The second time I went with my wife and daughter to buy coins for my typeset. In hindsight I REALLY should have bought that beautiful Barber half for $650 instead of the lesser coins i came away with that day. Ov

Why Obscured

Joy of learning I may be wrong but I have felt the joy in building registry sets was to promote a little competition, and share our collections with others. I don't really care what the value of your collection is and these values are obscured from others anyway. What concerns me is that by obscuring a collection from view others, especially the new collector, you exhibit a lack of friendliness to the hobby.

2006 MY YEAR IN REVIEW

This has been a good year and a bad year...as almost all are. I have made a lot of purchases to fill sets. And did manage to complete a couple. But the end of the year has been a complete disaster. I hate to say it, but I am beggining to hate christmas. A very few years back, I lost my father to cancer a week and so before christmas, and this year three days before christmas, we lost a consumer that we have taken care of for over 15 years. She was a member of the family, not just a payche

2006: COLLECTING YEAR IN REVIEW

A look back at the year's purchases, sales, and goals. *Top 15 Most Wanted List: This was an interesting year regarding the list. I purchased only 3 coins; #5-10-15. All were Quarters. Fewer of my targeted coins were seen this year than in the past. Additionally, I rejected more of the candidates which I inspected. I'm not sure, yet just what this means; but my initial reaction is that the "good stuff" is being held by collectors and not being turned over for "investment" purposes.

1/70th equals 10X value

The difference between a 69 and a 70 is 6 to 10 times the value? I'm new but I don't get it! I just don't see how a coin that is 1 point higher on a 70 point scale can be 6 to 10 times more valueable than the one just 1 point less in grading. Is this a bubble that will burst or is this a come on by the slabbing companies to generate business. I have looked at over 75 coins graded 69 and 70 and can't see a difference. Whats up?

NGC's 48 Hour Service took...48 Hours!!

sorry for cutting in line but.. I was very pleased with NGC's 48 hour service this week. I thought there might be hold ups because of the Holidays but on Wednesday I checked the site and my coin was listed as received. Yesterday it was already in Quality control and when I checked this morning it said finalized/imaged/shipped...wow..A++++++ Sorry for cutting in line, for all of you who have been waiting for long periods of time-but this was a final coin for a set I have been working on for a

Can you guess the score of a 1 of 1 kennedy half?

I just put the first Business Strike coin into my 2006 KDB Business Strike Mint Set . My granddaugters set now has the only Kennedy Half graded PL so far for 2006. One of only a few kennedys ever graded PL. If you look at my set: 2006 Mint Sets: KDB Business Strikes You will see that the score for this coin is zero. To be fair, across the street at PCGS they are having trouble recognizing regular 2006 issues in their registry, and they don't even have a 2006 mint set in their regis

It's The First Time...

...that NGC has taken this long on my submission. I went to a small local coin show on November 4th. (see my journal article "A Nice Afternoon For A Coin Show") I sent the coins for grading on the 6th, the Monday after the show, and NGC received them on the 9th. Well, that's been 32 working days now, not counting the day they received the coins, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. They are still marked as received!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess I've been spoiled, as on e

System has CHANGED, Part II

All seems well until January 1. I spoke to an NGC customer service person yesterday and received a separate email response this morning. The new tier--Modern-Special--will begin to be enforced on January 1. They will accept the order as I submitted it last week and I will get the 20th Anniversary Pedigree. Thanks NGC!

System has CHANGED!

I hope the System still WORKS As a follow-up to my two earlier postings (titled "System WORKS" and "System WORKS, Part 2"), I received three additional 20th Anniversary ASE sets from the mint on December 21. (Piecemealing the maximum of 10 sets into smaller orders allows me some flexibility with pedigree grading, etc.). On December 22 I created my invoices and shipped them to NGC using the exact same process as before on two other sets. Last night I was browsing the NGC/CCG websites and notic

Holiday Coins

I told my 12 day old grand daughter about the new collection I started for her, but she was more interested in looking out the window. As I wrote in my last entry. I Just started a 2006 mint set for my first grand-daughter. Several people here wrote and offered me their congrats. One member even offered to send a few coins to help out! I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and help with my newest set! Before we went to visit my new grand-daughter we went to visit my mother-in-law. M

Revenge, a dish best served cold....

I know, it is not in keeping with Christmas, but it sure felt good!!! Dear Journal, last week I won a small auction lot at Heritage Internet. Now, while I have received some very nice coins from Heritage, their customer service really SUCKS!! I will pay for an auction in my usual timely manner, and it is usually two weeks or MORE before they get around to shipping my winnings. They expect payment within 7 days, but wait WEEKS to ship... doesn't quite seem right to me. I have mentioned this

The cent is down, the half is down...and now I'm down. Merry Christmas one and all! It's been a while since I posted. I moved to Tampa from DC, and MAN! it great to be in Tampa! I'm not a DC kinda guy. While in the mist of moving, I had some coins that I asked to be held while I got a firm address if they would of been sent at the time of my move. My one entry had over 400 hits which was titled ...and a hush falls on NGC. Well, the outcome of waiting for those coins to come back, all of

Let's Compare Customer Service

I think NGC has the best customer service. Compared to PCGS and Hertiage, NGC wins hands down. When I have had to contact NGC for any reason I have usually received a response in less than 24 hrs, often within hours. However, with Heritage responses often take a few days. With PCGS, well I'm still waiting. In September I sent a email concerning verifying a PCGS slabbed coin. No response. Sent the email again, and again (4 times in all) ... Still no response. Then I sent a letter

New Year's Resolution

Setting my collecting goals for 2007 I Resolve: 1) Not to start any new sets this year. I have enough already started and not completed. 2) To finish my Buffalo nickel short set. I need 3 to complete it. 3) To finish my Indian Quarter Eagle set. Need 2 to complete and 1 upgrade needed. 4) To continue working on my 1899 Mint Set. Need 10 to complete. Do you have any I need? Let me know. 5) To work on 1891 Mint set. 6) To pickup my usual moderns- American Eagles, dimes and halves. Sa

The Grinches that Stole Christmas

A New Service at NGC A while back, Michael Cooper suggested that NGC come up with a new service. I sent him a reply and I thought it worthy to share here. Your idea of adding an additional service sounds great. However, there are a couple of flaws with the idea. Number 1: This would make the graders know the standard or at least be able to read it. They would no longer be able to look at pictures of previously graded coins and assign the grade. Number 2: This would mean hiring someone to write

Received coins in mail today

My order status still shows them in quality control I received my coins back today from NGC. They are the submissions I sent in of ship themed coins to add to my registry set-High Seas.I know that this site has been having trouble lately due to upgrading, but I hadn't realized that it appears to have trickled into other areas of the site. I was pleased with the grades, mostly because there were no bodybags. Since this is a non-competitive set and grades aren't that important-just slabbing and

The best laid plans ...

My daughter was due the end of January. This was going to be my first Grandchild. I had plans to look through thousands of coins as they were released from the mint in persuit of the finest set I could submit and assemble for her birthyear set. This was going to be a family affair, with everyone chipping in time to look through coins and join in the hunt. I received a call two weeks ago that the baby was in trouble and my daughter was going into the hospital - 8 weeks early. last Monday they
