Another Turn Around Story

Is it ok to pay for a 12 day turn around and have it take weeks longer. How about a 21 day order that consistantly takes months to receive. I feel like I'm a reasonable collector. One who is patient and understanding. However poor service eventually wears down the most positive of attitutes. I have submitted 28 orders for grading and encapsulating; literally hundreds of coins. I know I'm a small operator when one considers the people who send in hundreds of coins at a time.... but at the spe

Ebay getting to popular for a decent deal???

Rare 20 dollar gold bought for cheap! Was tracking a 1920 20 Dollar St. Gaudens PCGS MS63 through Heritage Auction house for about a month. On the final auction day I noticed that there were only FOUR people watching and bidding as compared to a similar auction on ebay were they Had 17 bidders fighting for the same coin. Anyway I put in a very high secret bid and none of the others could match it or even tried, so I ended up getting it for $800.! Wow that is a bargin with todays hot gold and c

US Mint and the First Strike Designation

What's a First Strike worth and why bother? Did anyone see the article that the US Mint published concerning the First Strike Designation on the the 2006 gold buffalo and silver and gold eagles. They indicate they do not take inventory on when these coins were struck only packaged and therefore they do not designate any as first strike. In other words coins delivered after the thirty days may have been struck within the first thirty days. In fact a lot probably were as the acticle indicates

Replica Coin To Fill a Rare Coin Album Hole?

I have found a better solution... As I was filling in my album holes with the new circulated Standing Liberty Quarters this morning that I purchased at the convention yesterday, I took a look at the 1916 slot.As with many of these old whitman coin albums it had the "hole" filled with a cardboard circle saying RARE. I have never had a problem with cracking out a semi-key date coin from a slab to fill a hole in one of my circulated sets, but I doubt I will ever stick a coin worth THOUSANDS into

Attended the Baltimore Coin Convention Today

crowded due to Veterans Day Holiday? I had a great day. It was Veterans Day and the start of the Baltimore Coin Convention and I was off of work, and off to Baltimore{about an hour north of me here in Calvert cty Maryland}..A beautiful 75 degree day, the last of the fall leaf color changes..just glorious. I parked a few blocks away and enjoyed a pleasant walk to the convention. The place was hopping..and huge..tons of tables and stuff to do. I checked out the pre-viewing of a few coins in Bowe

Is Coin Collecting Sexy?

You will have to read this to find out. I went to the Long Beach Coin Show in September 2006, and while I was outside waiting for the doors to open, I noticed something different about the mix of people standing around. There were numerous very attractive women also milling about waiting to get in. I thought to myself, what?s going on? Is coin collecting becoming a sexy hobby, where appealing women want to hang around the professional dealers and amateur collectors? Where the superstar dea

NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters

I just cant help myself Well...since my explosion back into coin collecting I have aquired quite a few more of my State Quarters... I purchased the complete 2000, 2003 sets and the 3 remaining 2002 quarters I needed. I did manage to pick up one of the 2002 quarters for under $40 so that was pretty cool. so now I am standing in front of the Empire State Building with a couple suction cups in my hands trying to figure out how Im gonna get to the top. I now have the complete silver sets from

Be careful of what you are buying

Or how I was buying when tired Another day looking for 1994 Silver Eagle coins was actually going quite well. I was doing marvelously on all of the auctions. When I looked the next day I had lost all of the auctions! Another try will be needed for the coin. BUT I did win a nifty 1994 Silver Eagle BOX and COA for the rather modest price of $51.00! I JUST CANNOT WAIT TO ADD THIS TO MY COLLECTION!

A Day With the Family and Found a St. Gaudens

didn't even spend a dime for it either... Ok, I'll admit that the title is intentionally misleading. I am writing this to record my own experience and so other colectors may appreciate the beautiful St. Gaudens photo.....My daughter had an art project due the other day and part of it was to pick a piece from the National Gallery of Art here in Wash. DC. I thought this would be great because then maybe I could walk down the street to the Smithsonian and look at the National Numismatic collectio

Start... Stop... Start... Stop..

There is life after a baby... Coin collecting for me started about seven months after meeting my now wife. I can still remember that invitation of a close friend to go upstairs and look at a MS-65+ 1955 double die cent and a few Snow type Indian Heads under the stereoscope. That was 2000, and it was just in time to go back and buy an OGP 1999 set. Now my two main hobbies, biking and coin collecting, really pair off great for the seasons. Last year around February, budgets were tight and

Finally found one, but not on EBAY!

Finding a diamond in the rough. If you have patience and look hard enough you WILL find what you are looking for even at an affordable price. The coin I was looking for had less than a 200 total population, but after tracking and checking with other less poplular auction houses, besides ebay I was able to locate a bright white 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter graded MS64 with FULL Head by PCGS for a great price. I was so excited, it was like being a kid at christmas again.

re: toning

Thanks for the info all! For those who wanted to hear the responses, coins can continue to tone after being slabbed. The unanimous recommendation was to use Intercept Shields to protect coins from unwanted toning. Also, best not to store slabs or coins in hot, damp places.

A Nice Afternoon For A Coin Show

Wild, Wild West didn't get too wild... It was a beautiful afternoon here in the heartland for attending a coin show. It was nice to be able to have some money to buy money, and a couple of coins will be added to my signature set. I attended a small local coin show at a mall this afternoon. I wish I could have spent more time there, but I couldn't take the whole day off from work. But I was allowed to leave work an hour early, and I made good use of my time. Two coins I really was looking f

Lesson Learned

Luckily not an expensive one! I went to the local flea market today, and browsed the usual booths and noticed one dealer had numerous proof and mint sets, so I went for a look ~ there was the good one...the 1999 silver proof set with a tag of 250. Figuring the dealer hadn't checked his books lately, I snagged it, and grabbed a 2000 set as well. In my haste for the deal, I hadn't even checked for the coveted Deep Cameos, In my car I opened the boxes to check out my new "treasures" -- imagine
