Be careful of what you are buying

Or how I was buying when tired Another day looking for 1994 Silver Eagle coins was actually going quite well. I was doing marvelously on all of the auctions. When I looked the next day I had lost all of the auctions! Another try will be needed for the coin. BUT I did win a nifty 1994 Silver Eagle BOX and COA for the rather modest price of $51.00! I JUST CANNOT WAIT TO ADD THIS TO MY COLLECTION!

A Day With the Family and Found a St. Gaudens

didn't even spend a dime for it either... Ok, I'll admit that the title is intentionally misleading. I am writing this to record my own experience and so other colectors may appreciate the beautiful St. Gaudens photo.....My daughter had an art project due the other day and part of it was to pick a piece from the National Gallery of Art here in Wash. DC. I thought this would be great because then maybe I could walk down the street to the Smithsonian and look at the National Numismatic collectio

re: toning

Thanks for the info all! For those who wanted to hear the responses, coins can continue to tone after being slabbed. The unanimous recommendation was to use Intercept Shields to protect coins from unwanted toning. Also, best not to store slabs or coins in hot, damp places.

A Nice Afternoon For A Coin Show

Wild, Wild West didn't get too wild... It was a beautiful afternoon here in the heartland for attending a coin show. It was nice to be able to have some money to buy money, and a couple of coins will be added to my signature set. I attended a small local coin show at a mall this afternoon. I wish I could have spent more time there, but I couldn't take the whole day off from work. But I was allowed to leave work an hour early, and I made good use of my time. Two coins I really was looking f

Lesson Learned

Luckily not an expensive one! I went to the local flea market today, and browsed the usual booths and noticed one dealer had numerous proof and mint sets, so I went for a look ~ there was the good one...the 1999 silver proof set with a tag of 250. Figuring the dealer hadn't checked his books lately, I snagged it, and grabbed a 2000 set as well. In my haste for the deal, I hadn't even checked for the coveted Deep Cameos, In my car I opened the boxes to check out my new "treasures" -- imagine

Finally found one, but not on EBAY!

Finding a diamond in the rough. If you have patience and look hard enough you WILL find what you are looking for even at an affordable price. The coin I was looking for had less than a 200 total population, but after tracking and checking with other less poplular auction houses, besides ebay I was able to locate a bright white 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter graded MS64 with FULL Head by PCGS for a great price. I was so excited, it was like being a kid at christmas again.

Going in the wrong direction

My goal was to walk away from collecting... but it sucked me back in. Just when you think you've recovered, ya relapse. Coin collecting just might be an addiction. I wonder if I can go on disability to stay home and buy coins. In any case I had planned to sell off my collection of NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters. It's not a complete set of course (even when speaking of the coins which have already been released). Instead of selling them, I just purchased the 2000 year set. This brings m

Coin toning after encapsulation by NGC I'm relatively new to collecting and wonder if coins encapsulated by NGC and PCGS continue to tone after encapsulation. Any feedback is appreciated

Full Head and Full Bands Price Differences

a 99% FH or FB coin can be a fraction of the cost I remember reading a piece written by David Bowers on the "Full Head" Standing Liberty Quarters. It essentially raised the question that I have been struggling with this week. The November event in Baltimore has several coins that interest me, a few of these are SLQ's. One coin in particular does not have an official FH designation on the slab, however it does have a fuller head than many I've seen slide by. In addition to the 99% FH, as David B

NGC graded 1970 S/S Lincoln Cent PR67RD ?new variety

I look at all references but no mention of an S/S variety of the 1970 Lincoln Cent, Yet I have one graded by NGC. IN PF67RD no less. I have looked at the PCGS price guide. No listing of an S/S variety. NGC lists at as a PR67RD S/S Lincoln, but under comments they state no variety exists, and no numismedia price is assigned, but it's on their coin look-up in black and white. Why? Obviously it does exist since they graded it, listed it and I own it. So I cantacted Glenn Miller of Heritage and

Still Taking Digital Pics

Ceiling color makes a difference... ...on the quality of the image. I have all my coins and my computer in the basement (finished), which keeps family harmony. The ceiling board in the basement is a light off green color. And it sure shows up in the pictures, especially on the silver coins which have a lot of luster. What's funny is, it took me about 3 days to figure this out. On Sunday, I finally took some time away, did some other hobby interests, and while I was doing them, I happened to

1921 peace dallor spike

Is it a spike or is it a double die from the N in epluribusunum. I just bought a 21 peace dallor. After I bought it and got in better light, I noticed that it had a spike off the breast. I took it back into the dealer to see if he knew it was there. He looked and said no, and I don't need a loop to see it. When I got it home I looked at it with my magnifiers. It took me by suprise when I noticed that it was not only a spike but was in the shape of a V. The V is in direct line with the N in

A Hidden Treasure Found!!

pulled a rare/key date out of an old bullion roll!! I am far from being a coin dealer...the extent of my sales are selling off my old coins after I've bought an upgrade or clearing out a whole set to buy a key date-expensive coin for another set.Having said that, I am not above buying a bargain when I see it purely for the sake of a re-sale and a quick, small profit.I saw a nicely toned indian head cent proof on sale at an Amish market here for $50..which I resold for over $200 on ebay. The CRAZE vs Collector Happiness

EDITED TO ADD MY RANT! If you populate the NGC and PCGS message boards, or even if you don't and you are shrewd enough and experienced enough, you might know who those dealers are...the mercenaries of the profession...The ones that prime the unsuspecting up into plastic madness, bizzarre toning, false eye appeal and false grade appeal. The false sense of modesty, snobbery and compulsive prenuriousness that makes it appear they actually know what they are talking about. Beware of them! I say. Gi

System WORKS! Part II

Very Quick Turnaround from NGC on 20th Anniv. Sets To follow up my earlier posting, even though the turnaround times posted by NGC were 17 business days, my two, 3-coin 20th Anniversary ASE sets were Finalized/Imaged/Shipped on October 24 after having been Received on October 20. If you don't count the receiving day or the shipping day, that's just ONE business day to do the job. Remarkable! The six coins earned one MS70 and 5-MS/PF69's, as well as the correct Black labels. I'm no dealer.

The Last Coin in a Set

2 years on a 20 coin set and still 1 to go Well, another chance to acquire the final coin in a year set that has been my primary focus slipped by.Actually, far from slipping by, I made sure I got home in time to get final bids in on the internet portion of the auction. I logged in and with no surprise saw that my earlier bid had been outbid. Five minutes remaining and I had to decide quickly how much I wanted this coin. As any collector knows this is a tricky spot...finally fill that hole in t

A New Digital Cam

Will I have some nice closeups? It's sure nice to be "back in the saddle again" for my collection. I went through a good year period where I had to really watch my coin expenditures, but now hopefully I have everything straightened out. I'm bidding on some ABN plates in a Stacks/ANR auction. I can't wait to see if I win them, as they will fit in nicely with my Wild, Wild, West Signature Set. I'm also looking at a Trade Dollar from Carson City, but it has a big splotch of toning right around

Reverse proof silver eagles

I just got my 20th anniversary set I just got my 20th anniversary set and the coin is very nice. Just like the San Francisco coins tho all three eagles were jostled out of their slots in the box. However, this time, they remained in their plastic cases so no damage done. Is it coincidence or arrogance that the mint uses the same box that they charge $110 for in the 2 piece gold and silver eagle set? I am attaching a picture of the reverse proof for those wanting a peek at it while waiting for

PCGS/NGC price disparity

There is a really huge price gap in the 1963P Quarter Sales of NCG graded 1963P quarters at Heritage in MS-67 have been: $205 on 3/6/06 $276 on 3/28/05 $241 on 5/5/03 $201 on 4/8/03 $258 on 3/3/03 $213 on 3/3/03 and $235 on 1/13/03 while PCGS coins have sold for: $2530 on 1/15/05 $3680 on 11/6/04 $3220 on 6/5/04 and $3450 on 11/7/03.
