FIrst Strike Stupidity

What makes them more money? I was just looked over a back issues of the NGC newsletters. One article caught my attention in the September 06 newsletter about Coin Dealer? Or Mint Lackey? One of the concerns in the aricle was over money going for modern coins instead of older coins. The writer blamed the U. S. Mint and the $50 Buffalo and other limited edition coins. I think also some blame should be on the grading companies also for the bogus first strike labeling. I would like to know t

It Was Fun While It Lasted?

Number One No More!! For much of the year, I had the honor and pleasure of having the number one registry set for Non-Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars in GSA Holders. Granted, it is kind of an obscure category and not many people collect these coins. Many don?t even consider this category to be a legitimate subset of Morgans. I often wonder myself whether it deserves to be a separate category. Morgan silver dollars are very plentiful in general, and the only thing that separates the coins

State Quarter Registry Sets, SMS & Business Strikes

Do we need separate categories? I am somewhat new to the Registry and recently a new Collector Society member. I have noticed that there is a huge influx of MS69 grades in the SMS categories for 2005 & 2006 State Quarters. There are very few 2005 & 2006 Business Strikes in MS67 and even fewer in MS68. I have also noticed that the Population Reports have different categories for SMS and Business Strikes. Does anyone think there should be a separate category in the State Quarter Regis

WOW !! AN HCGS BEAUTY bought on ebay

Bet you've never seen an AU58 with this detail.. Bet you've never seen an AU58 with this detail, or lack thereof..lmao..I just wanted to chuckle about this and share a holiday laugh with my fellow collectors who may view this. This standing Liberty Quarter had a Title on Ebay.."Standing Liberty Quarter 1928-Certified AU58 WOW"...first of all I rarely even look at a listing that says "look" or "wow" or even "stunning"..but the price was so low I took a peek..and of course I already knew that it

Just Some Advice on Keeping a Hard Copy of Your Collection

Something I always had in the back of my mind to do, but a couple of things helped me along. This way, I can 'look' at my collection without having to go to the safe deposit box, or even get on the computer...which can be a pain in the neck sometimes. Also, I think it's a good thing to have packaged WITH your collection, along with reciepts of the original purchase, for possible tax/legal/estate purposes. First, having a photograph of all of my coins that are in the registry. I finally fig

New Presidential Dollars and the present holders

Are we to have new style holders from NGC and PCGS to allow the edge incuse portions to show? Just recieved my Numismactic News today and while reading on the new presidential dollars the thought came to me,,,with the present holders we won't be able to see the edges of the coins to see the dates and mint marks....huuuh Now I am into the modern certified coins big time, it's 85% of my business. So needless to say, I will be sending mucho coins off for certification....and the mint is gonna be

Grading, or Tossing a Coin?

ANACS coins in NGC "Bodybags" I sent 2 ANACS MS62, 1921 Peace Dollars to NGC for crossover. One would not cross due to "improper cleaning, PVC covered." The second one did not cross due to "staining." The "staining" coin has very good strike, so I was, naturally, dissapointed. When I sent it back to ANACS, along with the NGC bodybag, it was upgraded to MS63 (problem free)!! I am waiting for a result on the "improper cleaning" coin. NOTE: I uploaded the reverse image of the MS63 coin

Pricing Discrepancies

What is it really worth?? I?ve been collecting for several years now and do not consider myself an expert by any means; however, I have noticed that pricing discrepancies are the biggest thorn in my side. I enjoy collecting for the historic value more then anything else, but lets face it, we all what to know what our coins are ?actually? worth. I noticed that the discrepancies between NumisMedia, PCGS, Whitman?s, Coin Values, and others are sometimes vast. Why is this? And will I ever know

Happy for you But.....

I'm still struggling with this and other inconsistancies in NGC's grading. I sent in several new BU Eagles taken right out of the mint's shipping container. One came back as improperly cleaned??? How does this happen. A 1964 kennedy half dollar which was one taken from several rolls of new kennedy coins my father put away when they were first released came back improperly cleaned. How does this happen? The worst part is knowing the coins haven't been cleaned and we have no recourse. Not to me

Happy with NGC

Right on time and great grades. Just received one of my invoices this morning and it was right on schedule. Also, of the 25 statehood (2006) quarters submitted, 18 came back as PF 70 and the rest PF 69. I submitted these coins under the Economy and according to NGC's schedule estimated time was 14 days. It took exactly 14 days for this submission. Great work NGC.

Good news...bad news.... Dont you HATE that!!

The good news is WAAY better than the bad :-) Having paid for another year to be in the CCS, I again received a certificate for 5 earlybird gradings. A 1936 quarter was body-bagged for improper rev cleaning. While that was a bummer it was really no big loss. A '43d quarter received a less than stellar grade, AU58. It will soon reside in the collection of my youngest daughter. A '41s Merc did fairly well, garnering a MS64. while I thought it was FB it did not get the designation. My '41d Merc

The Wild, Wild West Will Return

after these words from it's sponsor... ...yes, I probably watched too much tv when I was younger. :-) However, since I am the major (and only) sponsor of my Wild, Wild West signature set, I've decided to do some changes. I've been mulling this over for the last few months, and finally decided it was time. For the last few months, I've had this feeling that my set was getting bulky and hard to handle. And I think also hard for anyone who looks at it to navigate through all the coins. So I'l

RE: Any other State Quarter DPL 's ??

Congratulations. It appears that you have the only certified DPL state quarter and a TN-P to boot! NGC lists PL and DPL coins where they exist. Even PL state quarters are not all that common in the census. There are a lot of mint-state state quarters out there and most have not been graded. Only time will tell how rare your coin really is.

Ike Proof Dollars

My set is complete this year.... I only tried to complete one set this year, even though I started many more. Isn't that the way it always is. My eyes seems to be larger than my buget can afford. That being said, I am very happy to have finished my Ike Proofs. Currently ranked number 7. I recently redid the photos and descriptions. Even if they dont win a prize, which will likely be the case, I am very happy with the coins, the pictures and the history lessons that go with them. Sharing the

Now to write the story...

Dec. 10th deadline approaches... Now close to two weeks away from this year's submission deadline for my entries and all the coins for this year are scanned in. There are three journeys to talk about. 2 for 2 new No. 1 sets - 2006 and $1 Sacagawea 1 for the expansion/upgrades to Statehood quarters and Half Dollars. Short of a couple of upcoming coin purchases yet to come in the next week, I look back at my past journal entires and have stayed the course to fill out what will be anot

Any other State Quarter DPL 's ??

Gulp....could it be ? Got my most recent submission to the long awaited Finalized/Imaged/Shipped stage, and eagerly clicked on the invoice link....not toooo disappointing! The most intriguing submission was a 2002 P Tennessee state quarter...it only came back an MS 66, but , came back with a DPL strike char !! I have searched, and checked, but is it possible....could it be ? Do I have the ONLY DPL state quarter ?? or do they just not list them ?? This is how a collector suddenly shifts ge

Coin Hogs Unite!!

SUUUUU-WEEEEET!!!! We know who we are. We have money, but we need more. We postpone purchases of non-necessities. We let our houses fall into disrepair to save cash. We eat at inexpensive restaurants when we could afford better. We drive older cars when we could have newer ones. We don?t care. We stay up late at night hunched over our computers staring at the screen for hours. Our eyes get blurry. We get little exercise. Our necks and backs ache, but we continue our ways. Who are w

Thanks For Buying My Coins

Thanks For Buying My Coins Thanks to everybody who participated at Teletrade yesterday, and bought my coins cheaper than I did :0). The next group goes on the auction block in 2 weeks. I hate to sell my collection, but I can hardly keep up with my name anymore, much less all these coins. That's the bad news, the good news is, I get to start all over again.
