working on my sets

a labor of love spent a few hours this morning adding some of the coins I just got back from NGC to my Signature set....I know that I probably spent a few dollars more encapsulating a couple of them than the coins are actually valued at. Their worth to me is a different subject though...worth every penny to slab them and become part of my High Seas signature set...Of the 8 coins I added today {half dozen to add later} I included my first 2 gold coins for this set; 2 coins from the Middle East;

Belloq, Raiders of the Lost Ark. What an exciting time for the humble coin collector/consumer: to be alive and actively collecting during a transformation in our nation?s coinage. Within a 10 year span subtle to dramatic artistic changes have occurred to so many of the U.S. denominations: the Sacagawea Dollar; Washington Statehood Quarters; Jefferson Westward Journey Nickels and the ?Return to Monticello?; American Buffalo Gold $50s; reverse proof (ooooh, aaaaaah) silver and gold Eagles; and

Small Local Coin Shows

sometimes some very nice coins can be found.. I just got back from a small coin show{around 30 tables} in Ocean City Maryland. What a great chance to get away, alone with my wife, for a few days to the beach. Although the weather was a bit wet for the first half of our trip, it was a great relaxing time together and I went to the coin show at the convention center for a couple of hours while she looked for end of summer bargains at the clothes stores.I found most items being sold at above tren

re; broken planchet error

looks to me like you got free lent from the mint. sorry pic not clear enough. It might be another loch ness monster. I would add that the red is the wrong color to possibly be copper after that much time. Copper oxidizes green. I am almost positive from looking at your pics that you have a red thread of some type. It's defintly NOT the loch ness monster. Sorry to have gotten your hopes up. VBG

Re:A question

It is the basic coin It is like lets say you have a 1878 7TF VAM-70 the price guide will give you the value of a regular 1878 7TF morgan Without the VAM in the same grade, it doesn't give you the value of that specific VAM and that is the parent coin (1878 7TF in the same grade)

Coins make me bi-polar...

What a difference a day makes Yesterday I was bummed about the grades I received on my submissions and frustrated with the whole thing. I am probably not alone when I get feelings that my coins may not get the same consideration as someone who has submitted 200-300 coins at a time or who pays for the top tier for his 5 $10,000 coins. Anyhow, my entire attitude changed with one trip to the post office. My coin from American Numismatic Rarities came today...and it is even better than I hoped. Th

boring stuff..not worth reading Well I finally got my grades for the 12 coins I sent in to add to my signature set. They were recieved at NGC on Sept 5th it is now Oct 6th..a lttle long but I'm not that concerned about that.I am a little disappointed in the grades..only 1 69{no 70's} out of 12..the proofs range from 64-68 which is the disappointing part since 5 of these 6 coins were taken from the mint box/felt case and never removed from the plastic capsules...the other 6 were mint state coins

A question

Can anyone tell me what/who is the "coin's parent"? Can anyone tell me what/who is the "coin's parent"? When I look at the monetary values of coins in my registry set, some of them have 2 asterisks attached. When I look at the bottom of the page it says that the coin's price was provided by the coin's parent? Who are those people? I presume not Mr. Morgan

Why Do United Kingdom Silver Coins Sell So Cheaply?

Are collecting Shillings a worthy enterprise for investment purposes. I've tried finding some info with modest results on the Shilling, and I can't understand why alot of these coins sell so cheaply. Is there some secret that I'm not aware of in dealing in United Kingdom silver?Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How low can I go?

I keep getting rarer and rarer Sac dollars, while my rating sinks lower and lower. This month I got the last Proof-Like Sac dollar I needed for my registry set. I've been wanting a Proof-Like Sac for each year of the series (the PL's are all Denver mint coins, of course). Even though my set is 100% complete and contains seven Proof-Like coins (2000-2006), my set is still ranked as number 66. Why you ask? Well, because every coin is an MS-66 (even though the 2003-D and 2004-D Proof-Like c

Re: More on Buying the Holder

I think there are a few reasons you see PCGS coins selling for multiples of similar coins in NGC holders. To keep this post to a reasonable length, I'll stick to only the most obvious and important one. I?ve posed the question to maybe a couple of dozen dealers over the past few years. Some said they think PCGS grades a little tougher (especially on very high-end modern material), some think there?s no difference between NGC and PCGS, and I?ve yet to hear a dealer say NGC is tougher. Some Points....again

with just over 800 TPG coins currently With just over 800 coins in TPG's in my current inventory, 94% are NGC. why? because I think that of the TPGers, NGC is as accurate as they get and because of the disparity in prices, more people can afford the NGC coins. In my personal collections as you can see, I collect majority of NGC..again because I can afford a higher grade in them. with the coins as a rule being just as nice and accurately graded. face it...price IS a determining factor in a

The COIN!!!!

Buy the Coin that Looks best to YOU!! I just finished reading a lot of my fellow collectors' journal entries and can't believe there is even a debate. A little history from an old-timer: before the TPG's we bought coins based upon their value to US-the collector..at my local coin shop I would ask if my dealer could do better on a price if it was a lower grade filler, if the coin had attributes I liked I would never ask...I probably would have paid more. I like white coins and full strikes..ton

I'm with "buy the holder"...

I'm tired of guessing grades of proof Besides, we all know that it now costs on the low end. $12.50 to get a coin graded. Well, there are A LOT of coins on auctions sites that fell into the same thinking as mine "I thought it would grade higher" and with the excitement lost of expecting a PF68 Cameo and getting a PF 67...well, some people are selling the slabs for less than $6.00! That's NOT counting buying a proof set, INSURANCE to mail it, and the postage you have to pay AFTER the coins ar

Buy the coin?? Buy the holder??

Buy what makes you happy!!! That is the key !! There are all kinds of opinions out there as to wether we should buy the coin or the holder. It would seem if you are looking at a really nice coin in an off TPG slab, then buy the coin because the slab and associated company is worthless... BUT if you are looking at a lesser graded coin in a PCGS slab... well BUY it NOW and then pay extra bucks to have it regraded on the chance it will move up. When it doesnt, send it to NGC (and pay yet more

More on Buying the Holder

Is there a real difference between a NGC and PCGS holder? I buying a lot of my coins using Teletrade Auction and I only buy NGC or PCGS certified coins. (I know for some this may be a bad practice, but so far I have been very satisfied with my results.) Anyway, I have noticed that a particular coin of the same grade will generally sell for about twice as much if it is in a PCGS holder than a NGC holder. Can anyone out there give me a good reason why PCGS should command such a premium? I

I SEE EMPTY GSA HOLDERS FOR SALE ON EBAY ALL THE TIME.

Are these rarities home grown? I see empty GSA holders for sale on eBay all the time. This suggests to me that some of the rarities are home grown. I don?t collect GSA coins, but if I did I would want them with the NGC or PCGS seal. The question is, who buys these empty holders? Is someone putting a raw coin in the empty holder-say a 1904-O Morgan-and creating a "rarity?" [attachment=:name]

Buy The Holder, Part 2

Now I'm Getting Scared!! It happened again, and I am really getting scared. Here is the latest headline: Ungraded 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollar in a GSA Holder sells for $11,335 on Ebay today. It was item number 110035415732. I checked the PCGS price guide. It is listed at a retail value of $70 in MS64, $220 in MS65, $485 in MS66, and $4500 in MS67. It was a nice coin to be sure. My guess is that it was at least MS64, maybe MS65. It has an outside shot at MS66. It sold for 51 times the

RE: A No Grade

I too have suffered this problem! I have also submitted proof sets from the 1960's in OGP! The last one I submitted, the Lincoln cent came back in a body bag as colored! (NO GRADE) This has happen to me twice on the 1960's. My first one, was a Commemorative Silver (2004's) dollar in OGP. It came back in a body bag as being cleaned. I pursed this one with the results of it still had a new home in a body bag. With the time and cost involved, I've just learned to live with it.
