RE: A Question--A comment--and a wish

Take a look at my Signature Set "Mike's Pedigrees". It's got a little write up about LaVere Redfield as well as a few other of the more prominent pedigrees of our time. And if you get a chance, shoot me an email and tell me what you think of it. Happy Holidays to all. MikeThis is my Redfield Dollar.1891-S Red

Redfield Morgans - should I, or shouldn't I (Buy Them)

3 Redfield Morgans ..... 86-S, 87-S, and 88-S Hi, Went to the local coin shop the other day and the dealer says, "would you be interested in these?" He proceeded to take out 3 Redfield Morgans. The first one, an 1886 S in the Green Redfield holder. Then, an 1888-S in a Red Redfield Holder. And lastly, an 1897 S in a Red Redfield Holder. All very nice looking Morgans. I thought for sure I had died and gone to Morgan Heaven. I asked him to price them for me and I'd let him know if I could afford

Got my Coin in the mail... After the long wait to find it, I received my coin in the mail today...only a few days after its purchase { I nervously inspected it for signs of cleaning, jewelry removal etc..and it looks great}. Being the final one to complete my set I think that I may go ahead and fork out the money for 48 hour service which still shows a 48 hour turnaround time. I know that NGC is busy and with all of the recent anniversary and commem releases they must be swamped with modern, e

How about a new grading service ???

No...no... not another company... get real -- there is only ONE grading service company... maybe two... Haven't we all had a coin or three body bagged for a reason we didn't agree with?? Haven't we ALL received coins graded less than what we thought it should?? (and in fairness, we have had coins graded HIGHER too, but that is not the point of this diatribe) I would like to see an optional, fee paid, service called "Summary Grading". This would include, again, for a fee, 4 digital pics, 2 ob

SMS and Business Strike

My SMS coin was graded as Business Strike!!! Ok, is this a common mistake? or was it done intentionally? perhaps my coin wasn't qualified for SMS designation? if I bought a graded business strike coin which turns out to be SMS, would NGC refund the difference?

Christmas Comes Early!!!!

2 years of searching and found it by luck Christmas came early for me. I finally found-and won-the final coin for one of my sets. The set is not a registry set, just a signature set that I started before there were signature sets. I started collecting a few years ago the France Gold 20 Francs Marianne and Rooster series dated from 1899-1914 {my wife is named Marianne and has unruly curly/wavy hair that I love}. The coins are mostly considered bullion coins by many people and are quite common a

I Just Found an Originall Bank Roll of 1943 Steel Cents!

I went by my local Coin Dealer today just for a visit and when I got there he was going through a recent purchase. As I started nosing around and going through what he had just purchased (generally making a pest of myself)there was a roll of pennies that the seller/original owner had purchased from the bank on April 15th, 1943. I know this because he wrote the date that he purchased it on the paper roll. This roll hasn't seen the light of day for over 60 years! I didn't think there were any Or

How Many Coin Designs For 2007?

If a complete collection of every mint produced coin in 2006 cost $15,000..how much next year? I recently read an article stating that had you bought 1 of every coin/set released by the USMint in 2006 it would have cost you a few bucks shy of $15,000...wow. I will be the first to admit that I love the new coin designs but this seems a bit much. I get frustrated also because there is no way that I can keep up with them and collect the coins for the sets that I have been working on for years. I

Could we add one more "Awards" category??

How about a "People's Choice" award.... This Collector's Society forum is a great place to be. The forum itself is free to all. Paid members (such as myself) get a few extra "bennies". We can input our collections with photos and descriptions and share our treasures with the world, all from the safety of our homes. We can share the exciting trips we made to obtain each of these little metal chunks, and we ourselves get to relive that adventure whenever we sign on. We can add those photos, to

Re Re: easier first

I have sent some GSA's in for economy tier and had them back within 7 days I think all the GSA's get rushed to the front no matter what tier you use because they do not have to go through quality control because its in the Government Holder (at least thats what I have heard). I know I sent in 7 GSA Morgans and they arrived on 9-1-06 and were sent back to me on 9-8-06 so that was 7 calender days, and like i said this was the cheapest tier available not earlybird

RE. easier first

By no means am I happy with the way that NGC grades all of the time. But, with that being said, I think that they do a good job overall. Yes, I've had some coins bodybagged that I think should have been slabbed but I've also had some coins slabbed that I thought would get "bagged" for sure. The one thing that I have learned through all of my experiences with getting coins graded is to ask myself "why did they do this" before I jump to the conclusion that these people are nuts and haven't go

Re: Proof 70

According to the PCGS standards, PR70 and MS70 mean no defects under 5X magnification. I don't know what NGC's standards are, but presumably they're not all that different.   It used to be a contentious question whether any coin should be graded PR70 or MS70. That grade, according to the more conservative view, was reserved for a coin entirely free of defects, something which exists only in theory. While the debate may continue as an academic matter, for practical purposes it's moot, since a

We are in agreement on the PF 70 Your email states that some of your submissions are downgraded for reasons you can't see at 10x magnification. Since the PF 70 I posted has a scratch that is visible WITHOUT magnification, all the more reason it should be downgraded. Thats why all my coins go to mmcgc I see said the blind man and thats why all my coins go to mmcgc. We get coins back all the time that are mysteriously marked down for reasons we can't see with a 10Xloupe so if you want a proof 70 send it to mmcgc aka munkeyman coin grading company. On the form you will indicate the grade you want by submitting the price required for the grade Best of luck The picture is of my mmcgc ms66 peace dollar DSC03576.J

Re: Proof 70 Opinion

With enough magnification, you can make any coin look bad. With enough magnification, you can make any coin look bad. That mark looks very small, and probably would not have held the coin back from 70 even if the graders noticed it, or not.

Opinion on Proof 70 Requested

Should it downgrade to 69 or 68? The photo below is of a 2006 ASE, Proof 70. Does the scratch above the second 'S' in 'STATES' qualify for 70? What should the rating be? Am I being too picky?? NOTE: Scratch is visible without magnification; the close up photo, in part, is to compensate for my limited abilities with a camera. hf HFaver@aol.com

Update on 2007 coins in 2006 Registry.

Is it someone's infinite wisdom or is there more to this? After I complained about the 2007 Australia Lunar Silver dollar being addded to its registry definition only a week prior to awards deadline, I note that the coin has been made non-competitive, but still has a positive point value that impacts registry rankings. After my previous complaint that the 2007 Australia Lunar coin was added to the registry definition just a week prior to the 2006 Registry Awards deadline. The registry Gods r

My End Of Year Review

Some holes were filled, and some are still empty... Since the registry year runs from Dec.10th-Dec.10th, I guess it is not too early for me to consider my ups and downs for 2006 as a coin collector.First of all, the only sets I completed were done with 2006 updates to modern sets..ie the Sacagawea proof set and Silver/flag/proof state quarters. I did finish my Franklin half set in my Whitman album but my goal was to have an MS/FBL set..and a few of these are still a bit weak on the bell lines.
