Sad day indeed!

Not that I have any #1 sets with PCGS coins,but... I admired NGC for making it possible to include PCGS coins in their registry sets. PCGS graded coins are, at a minimum, of comparable quality and NGC's openness to them was laudable. As another poster had mentioned, they appeared perched on a moral high ground. Not that any of my #1 World sets have anything but NGC coins in them. As a matter of fact, I find that top-pop PCGS coins are a lot more expensive. But I liked the convenience of sh

More on Labels

I have no affinity for labels... Yes! So now we can have 'First Releases' in addition to 'Early Releases.' NGC, PCGS, and other graders are in the business of grading and as long as there are collectors craving more labels, they can generate that much more revenue with different labels. We, the collectors, determine the demand for these labels, they are the suppliers. There was a time when home builders went by the dictum "Build it, and they will come." And then the housing market went bus

Wrong Target!

It is not the coins I am boycotting ... To all of you who saw my rant about the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets, I stand corrected. As I had made clear in my post, I was talking mostly about the unnamed coin dealers who have cornered the market in an attempt to gouge the collectors. They are the ones I am boycotting :-) Of course! I do not have anything against the coins themselves. I may get them if I can find some at a reasonable price. If not, I will live without them. And thank al

I am boycotting the 25th Anniversary Set

Following up on Amarillo's most recent post... Well! I am in agreement with Amarillo's post. What it did not catch is that the same company was offering these sets ungraded for that ridiculous price. They also have MS/PF 69s for quadruple the issue price and MS/PF 70s for 10 times the issue price (yes 10 times, $3,0000). I am sure the ungraded sets they offer for over 3 times the issue price is the ones that they did not think would even make MS/PF 69s by NGC. Not to mention that the same

The mint shipping UHR Double Eagles ~ Not exactly first come first served!

I had ordered my UHR double eagle on the first day it was available on the mint's web site and finally received it on Friday, March 6. Of course! I rushed it overnight to NGC to beat the March 9 deadline. Just saw the post from David Fischer that he had ordered on the second day and received his coin almost 10 days before I got mine. I did go through a similar experience of getting 'delayed' e-mails from the mint and had nearly lost hope of being able to obtain the 'early release' designatio

That didn't work!

I did go on a bit of a wild goose chase! Anxiety, it is evil. I thought, after reading jayh749s latest post, that I could find out the grades of my coins sitting in QC by trying to add them to my sets using their invoice (certification) numbers. Alas! It wasn't to be so. Maybe our fellow numismatist has a unique situation, where all his coins are finalized except for the one that was sent for conservation. Hence he could add them to his sets even though they don't show on the online submis

QC can be a killer too!

In the spirit of jayh749 and Revenants musings, I have seen my submissions sitting in Quality Control for a couple of weeks in the past, but... But I still can't help checking my submission status obsessively. My submission has been in QC for only two days, but I somehow think that it will get through faster this time. Also, jayh749 just made me realize that the invoice number could possibly add coins to your sets even while submissions sit in QC. I've gotta try it out.

That was a great gesture, guys! Keep up the spirit.

It is heartening to see so many folks offer to help our newest young numismatist. If he comes around to accepting some coins, I will pitch in as well. I have coins under submission and like the rest of you, I keep checking its status every few hours, as if the status would change after business hours. But I can't help myself. This evening, I was only gone for a couple of hours and then when I came back, I saw a string of new posts. So many offers for help to mold a future numismatist. I a

Congratulations! Award Winners.

It is that time of the year, where all our collecting hopes and dreams, sweat and blood, obsessions and resultant penury, get rewarded with recognition. What an honor it is, to be recognized by NGC for one's collection or for one's entertaining and educational journals. These registry sets are a boon to coin enthusiasts and have brought a new level of excitement to this hobby. Thanks to PCGS for the innovative creation of registry sets and thanks to NGC for taking it one notch further, by be

There is no doubt the 2008/07 is rare...

The question is, how high a price is justifiable? And that is where we differ in opinions. The fact that Dave Fisher was offered $225 by coin dealers shows us that its rarity is established. The mint's estimate of 47,000 minted establishes its rarity as well. Only time will tell how much a rational market will value it. Thank you, Terry, for your calm and collected summation. I do believe that everyone should own one, I am not quite sure if one should stock up at current prices, expecting

Further evidence of the irrational price of 2008/07 Eagle

David Fisher's experience furthers the evidence that this coin is too hyped up... As experienced by our fellow collector, no dealer at a big coin show was ready to pay more than $225 for the 2008/07 coin. Of course, they did not want to sell at that price either. Currently, there are hoarders on eBay who would pay much much more for them. And if these dealers had any confidence regarding the sustainability of gigantic price appreciation for these coins, they would have jumped at the chance

kjohn is right!

20th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets were available for quite some time... The 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets were available for a long time, well until Christmas of 2006. I remember having wondered about that. The 3 coin gold set was sold out the first day. That is what some remember, and attribute to the silver sets. As for the relative rarity of the 2008 with 07 reverse, I believe it is being overhyped. Yes! the bidding wars on eBay are crazy, but they are mostly driven by a few who

Kudos to Amy Lorenzo

Count me in as a fan of Amy Lorenzo... I agree with you guys, Amy Lorenzo is the perfect NGC employee. I have had some recent troubles at NGC and Amy was right on top of it and was able to get to a resolution extremely fast. As compared to problems I had a couple of years ago when my querries to NGC would dissappear in ether. So count me in as a fan of Amy. She does indeed deserve a raise. Hope it is enough to cover the rising gas prices :-) The attached picture is of the 2008 Australia

The missing link to a complete silver eagle collection - The 1995-W

Oooh! I came so close once, to complete my SAE collection, but could I afford the 1995_W? Neverman has aspirations that I once held. I came close, very close! But I just wasn't able to collect the 1995-W. Wish I was an avid an astute collector back in 1995, but I didn't even know of the existence of the beautiful Silver Eagles back then. Even if I did, I would not have had the resources to grab a 10th anniversary special set which included 4 Gold Proof Eagles and 1 Proof Silver Eagle. Wit

My thoughts of Bald Eagle Commemoratives

Bruce Wilmore sparked a thought... Simply put, in my opinion, the reverse design for the bald eagle silver dollar coin is quite plain. The half dollar has a more imposing and robust bald eagle on the reverse. It is also cute with two chicks on the obverse. The gold commemorative, which is beyond my reach at the moment, is more beautiful than the silver dollar coin, but to tell you the truth, the eagle is much more beautifully crafted in the annually issued gold american eagle coin. So my o

rfar did nothing more than share his experiences.

The removal of rfar's posts was uncalled for... I sit firmly in the camp of those who believe that rfar was only providing us with valuable information and that NGCs removal of his posts are unjustified. None of his posts asked us to act a certain way. We simply had the benefit of incorporating his experiences along with a whole host of other information in making our decision. Now I am certainly glad that all of my information set regarding Heritage auctions are not solely based on their o

I too agree with Bully! That's a great idea.

Counterfiets with actual matching NGC serial numbers? I feel so vulnerable. Kinda like my home alarm system aiding the thiefs. I totally agree with bully. There is no need for NGC/Collectors Society to display serial numbers in set listings, even a part of it, to the general public. But if we must, just a partial listing of numbers should suffice. We certainly need NGC to add security features in light of this new information.

Update on 2007 coins in 2006 Registry.

Is it someone's infinite wisdom or is there more to this? After I complained about the 2007 Australia Lunar Silver dollar being addded to its registry definition only a week prior to awards deadline, I note that the coin has been made non-competitive, but still has a positive point value that impacts registry rankings. After my previous complaint that the 2007 Australia Lunar coin was added to the registry definition just a week prior to the 2006 Registry Awards deadline. The registry Gods r

2007 Coins in Registry Already?

The NGC Registry Set for Australia Lunar Silver Dollars already includes the 2007 coin, just a few days before the deadline before registry awards. A Storehouse of Knowledge

I learn so much by observing these journal entires... A journal post with a casually appended picture of a coin, an eagle eyed query, and a sharp response from yet another poster. SMS (or Satin Finish) coins are providing more fodder for variety enhusiasts.

Well! The satin finish coins from mint sets are yet another variety to add your collection. Last year's Satin Finish coins generated a call from some mint state coin collectors to recognize their "business strikes" separately from the Satin Finish (or SMS) coins in registry sets. From all I have heard, both PCGS and NGC are considering weighting the business strikes of the same grade higher than the satin finish coins. It appears that there are a lot of satin finish coins from the mint sets

RE: Re: re: This is the NGC Registry. Right?

I seemed to have ruffled some feathers, but I didn't miss the point in the body of my post, only failed to mention it in the teaser for the post. In my last post, along with my discourse on value added via the use of options was the following sentence: "If they start to rate PCGS coins any lower, the value of our options will diminish." So I didn't miss the point nor were my arguments "misdirected" as another poster has suggested. Should NGC award lower points for PCGS coins? In my opinion

Re: This is the NGC Registry. Right?

Sure it is the NGC registry. But exclusivity is not right. My previous post with the teaser "NGC enhances value by its inclusiveness" addresses this issue. Exclusivity does not help PCGS and it never will. PCGS registry set came first. It was innovative, but that is where its advantage stopped. NGC registry came later, but it was a great improvement, with its points system and inclusiveness. Some of my best sets are all NGC, but I am not delusional enough to believe it is better than any

RE: Re: NGC vs. PCGS

NGC enhances value by its inclusiveness. PCGS has a fanatic following from people who still believe that it applies stricter grading criteria than any other TPG. Population reports suggest that it may be true only of MS70 or PR70 grades in modern coins. Also, there is some speculation that PCGS may be keeping the 70s tight only to serve its dealers' network. Regardless of the reason, the effect is that there is a market premium for PCGS coins, even in lower grades. I do not beleive that th
