Anxiously Awaiting My 2009 Proof Set

Should be here from the Mint by the 1st of July Greetings!! Been spending most of my weekend completing my college assignments left over from last week. Been getting great grades and good feedback from all of my teachers, which is encouraging as I have not attended college for about 9 years. It's hard work, but it is great to be back in classes. I ordered my 2009 Proof Set from the Mint on June 22 and I am glad to report it is well on it's way and should be delivered by the 1st of July

A LITTLE LATE NITE "DUSTING AND CLEANING"

ORDER FROM CHAOS AFTER SOME REMODELING and other disjointed thoughts Had some time tonight and thought I would add some gallery shots, I need to add my IHP's, my MS 62 '21' Peace Dollar. As always the commems need all kinds of work. The Indian head pennys came out fair, for me they were some of my best. The sizes came out good with some detail. I figured I now had a workable formula proved out though trail and error. Using my new formula and pretty confident of success. I thought why not just

75% complete on my IHC Proof Set

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel Well after last weekend's purchase of a PCGS OGH Proof 1868 I have completed 75% of my set. I still have to acquire most of the copper nickels (1859-1864) and they can be quite pricey. The 1864-L with only 20 minted keeps 99.9% of us from completing the IHC Proof Sets. The last 1864-L proof I saw sold went for $150k. If you like to try and guess the grade just check out my set to see if you nailed it. Happy collecting and I shall return soon I hope.

Two Sides to Every Coin...

Not All is Tinsel in Tele-Trade Town I too have had dealings with Tele-Trade. Perhaps enough time has gone by to give them another chance, but not enough to forget. Tele-Trade charges, what, 15% commission with a minimum $9.00 per coin, then they tack on some pretty hefty shipping and insurance charges, so you can imagine my surprise when two back-to-back shipments were shipped with insuffiecient postage, thus they arrived "POSTAGE DUE". I had to go to the post office and pay TT's delelict c

An addition to my Morgan Collection

To buy one really great coin or a lot of common coins I came into a little bit of money recently and found myself once again in the position of buying multiple inexpensive graded Morgan dollars or to buy one really nice Morgan. I had the same situation when I purchased my 1896-O Morgan dollar. I decided to once again go with one coin that was going to be tough to obtain in mint state on my budget. I purchased an 1893-P Morgan dollar graded by NGC as a MS60. I am so happy I was able to fill

To submit or buy graded

The more I talk to other collectors the more tend to agree Just finished talking to a few other collectors about the pros and cons of submitting coins for grading or just buying graded coins. I have analyzed data for over 6 months now not only from myself but other friends that collect and it is over whelming that money is(wasted) on getting coins graded (raw cost of the coin, shipping charges, insurance, grading fees) With grades which are opinions based on loose data at best and a standard

It Pays To Crossover

How I made $500 I just got the grade for an 1939 Jefferson Proof Reverse of 38 from NGC. I had sent in a very toned ANAC graded 1939 Jefferson Proof Rev of 38 graded at Proof 64 by ANAC. After cleaning by NCG they sent it to NGC for grading and they gave it a Proof 67! It went from being worth $150 (I only paid $90 because of the ANAC slab) to a $650 coin. I cannot wait to see it in hand. This is the best crossover I have yet to experience.

MY LAST IKE

An Eisenhower won't even get ya a cup of joe Friends; I went through my coins Monday and sent my last ungraded survival kit off to auction. Indian head pennies, proof sets, silver nickles and my altered surface Morgan Dollars. When I stuffed the box there was one 1976 Ike sitting there in a plastic pouch. Well I don't think the auction house would know what to do with one Ike ungraded so I slipped it in my pocket. Tuesday I went to the local convenience store for coffee, pulled out

My First Teletrade!

Winning my first Teletrade lots and buying "certified" vs. buying "raw". Many of you may be surprised, but in 35+ years as a coin collector, I made my first purchase through Teletrade last Sunday. To be fair to myself, I have been a collector for longer than Teletrade has been in business, but barely, a mere 12 of 35 years. In fact, until I joined Collector?s Society, I had never heard of Teletrade and only heard of Heritage in passing. Because of your enthusiastic reviews of Teletrade, I thou

COIN CLUB

Last night was my first coin club meeting Friends; I have been collecting Morgan Dollars for more than a year. A few months after I started collecting I checked the internet for PCGS & NGC dealers within 50 miles. I ended up with a list of 5 shops and set out to visit them. Wouldn't you know, every one of the stores were shut down. What does a hick in the sticks gotta do to meet other coin collectors? I know "JOIN COLLECTORS SOCIETY", so that is what I did in January. I have learned so m

Slowly Falling in the Rankings

I am slipping further down the list even though ........ I've added 18 coins to my sets this year! My point total is 180,106, 220th place and falling! 2 2009 ASE's- one MS70 and the other MS69. 1 Capped Bust Half dollar 1 Seated Half dollar 1 Half Dime 2 Barber quarters 11 vintage gold coins- 1-$1G, 2-$2.50 Liberty's, 7-$5 Liberty's and 1-$10 Liberty. I think the 1884 Half Eagle that got 575 points was the lowest single coin point total coin of the bunch. Now things have slow

A Very Pleasant Experience from "Teletrade"

In this hobby a deal like this is well worth mentioning! Greetings, Just wanted to share a little something that happened to me. I get a large majority of my coins through auctions, mainly Teletrade, Heritage and e-Bay, in that order. I don't think I have ever heard of something like this happening before and know it has never happened to me. I sent off several large submissions to NGC several months ago and even made a comment in a previous post about some of my coins being returned in "b

An Ugly Experience.

It takes all kinds..... I was surfing the web looking for more sources to send my hard-earned money to when I chanced upon US Rare Coin Investments. Sounded good, so I thought I would check them out. What a mistake!! I looked at two double eagles and the prices were way out of line according to the PCGS price guide. I sent them an email explaining that I realized that the PCGS price guide was based on an 'average' coin for the grade and then I offered some friendly advice that they may wan

"Weary of making vows that I can't/will not keep...

Decided to just buy whatever I can afford whenever... Greetings collectors, First off, it's good to see Mr. Thompson back in the "numismatic" swing of things, and with a very nice 20 year old Jefferson. Congrats! Also congrats to Jackson on the 5000 views to a set he has worked so hard on to get it where it is today. If any of you have not checked out his signature set, to say you are missing something is an understatement. And last but not least a "hearty" congrats to Audrop in the Morgan D

Pictures for my 300+ point Morgans

I like it when I need to add my pics Hey Friends; Just logged on to add 5 pics to my lower grade coins I listed last week ( the other 16 were not high enough in points). It sure is a blessing to see Mr Thompson putting a coin in his set###WELCOME BACK###. I cut my grass all day so when I got time for a break I decided to pull out the Morgans and update my pics so I could see where I really was. I know a lot of holes are filled but I don't intend on keeping any coins under 300 points. HAP

I'm Baaaaaack

First purchase in over a year, not a big deal, but one to add to the registry My good friends of the Society. While the financial situation in my household has stagnated (hasn't gotten much worse or much better), I was able to grab a coin on Heritage Last night. I have long been a fan of the Lincoln Series and even more so with the neat new pennies. Along with that followed the Jefferson Nickel Series, somthing I have really enjoyed putting together and have not had to sell (and hopefully w

Trying hard to keep focused.

Too many distractions! My 2009 half year resolution is as follows: I, audrop, do solemnly swear to only buy coins that fit in one of my existing registry sets (preferably gold). No more temptations, short-cuts, waywardness(?), weak knees, cold feet, lazy liveredness(?), etc. It is time to put the blinders on and continue down (or is it up?) the straight and narrow path to completion of at least one of my sets during whatever is the remaining time allotted for my life. THE MORGAN DOLLAR KING

There is not one in my set and probably never will be. Friends & Community; Here it is almost July. By now most of us have adjusted to our economical situations. I would imagine I am not the only member holding on by a thread. I am praying that a job will come along soon to get me out of my IRS Hole but that being my only problem I see it as minor. I know others are in worse situations. Every week I find a Wonderful and expensive Morgan for sale and I think to myself "there goe

LIBERTY is always inspiring

It's been another rough day...I need a coin escape! Hello everyone. It's been a while since I've had the time to put my thoughts to virtual paper here at the Collector's Society. After a rough day, I figured I'd take a break and try to escape into the world of coins for a while before heading home from the office. My birthday was earlier this month, and when my wife asked what I wanted as a gift, I immediately replied, "How about a nice half cent?" After determining that I was serious (

A Request to the NGC Collector's Society Technical Staff

This is a real "nice to have" I noticed a shortcoming with this website for sometime and just now I wanted to bring it to the "powers that be"'s attention. Specifically, when you click on over to the NGC Census (from being logged in at Collectors Society), you again have to log in to the get to the NGC Census. While it is easy to just log in again, it is also annoying as it gives you a "sales" screen that shows you the level of memberships that are available. With the IT background that I

What a Difference a Year Makes!

My first year as a member of Collectors Society Many of us have heard the clich? ?what a difference a year makes.? This saying, though a clich?, has a lot of truth to it and my first anniversary on May 31, 2009 as a member of ?Collectors Society? is no exception. A year ago, I joined Collectors Society with the express purpose of directly submitting my raw gold coins to NGC for grading. Now a year later, my collection resembles nothing of what it once was. I have been a coin collector f
