Newly Won Acquisition Wasn't Even Bid Up on eBay

I won a 1893-O Half Eagle for the auction's reasonable opening price! Boy, was I surprised that I won a PCGS AU55 1893-O Half Eagle for $379 on eBay. I was the only bidder. 110,000 were minted. It is my second New Orleans minted Half Eagle. I think it was a great buy. BTW- I went to the ANA Coin Show in Coloradio Springs yesterday. Did not find any of the coins I needed so I didn't buy anything. I did take a few graded gold eagles 1/10 oz and got offers of $100 for each of them. I didn't s

Silver Territories

Silver Territories Sampler I added the last six State Series quarters in silver to my collection 4-10-09. I purchased them as a complete set. I got an extra VI and no DC, so had to send in for a replacement. That's why the numbers don't all match. They are all in the new NGC Edge-View holder which is awesome! All the coins are perfect 70 coins. No defects of any kind on any of them. They are all truly beautiful coins. Fitting end to a great series!!

Clad Territories

Final in Clad Series. The six final Clad State quarters. I consider these part of the State set. I purchased them as a group on 3-9-09. These were the first coins I owned in the new NGC Edge-View holders. I was hooked right away!!! I had all my other State quarters put into the new holders as well. Now the set of 56 matches!!! Really a neat set of six. They are all perfect 70's, no defects of any kind. I wish my photography skills were better so you could see what I mean!!!!

Clad State Quarters

Journey from start to finish on my Clad State Quarter set. My coin collecting story starts 40 years ago. I collected a bit in school days as a fun hobby. Liberty V nickels and Silver Dollars were my favorites. I also collected World coins my folks brought back for my from their travels around the Globe. My coin hobby took a back seat to my train hobbies though, and I was out of the hobby for many, many, years. Fast forward to 2009. I needed a new collecting hobby for fun. I decided to c

RAINY DAYS AND SUNDAYS

Catch and Release Being an avid sports fisherman and outdoorsman and being recently retired I needed something to do when the weather was bad. I took up ebaying and after trying collecting Swiss Army Knives for a while I discovered Silver Eagles were fun and easy to collect. If you kept all the fish you caught you did not need to catch any more so I took up catch and release. I adopted the same perspective with Silver Eagles. The more I sold, the more I could buy. Now I have just as muc

The Coin of the Month for July

And the coin of the month for July is... an 1803 Cent. This is the small date, small fraction variety. It has a nice even dark chocolate brown color and the devices have a nice luster. There are very few minor marks and the surfaces are very smooth. This piece is graded AU-55 by PCGS.

A Dilemma...

...and I hope my fellow Society members can help. I have been having an enjoyable time trying to get my raw Mexican coins in some semblance of order, and I've found a few that are submission candidates. I've also bought a couple of raw, circulated Morgans that I've add to my raw set. I'm still debating between auctions sites for my coins that don't fit into my interests. However, I've run into a dilemma. While searching through my coins, I found a stack of Canadian coins I submitted for grad

I have decided to take a trip down "memory lane"...

Getting back to my "Numismatic roots" for/with a little change... Greetings Collectors, I have been "caught up", "addicted", "obsessed" and "chained" in a "tunnel vision" sort of way, for quite some time, buying slabbed coins in order to further my sets and my rankings here at the "registry". The "monkey" on my sholder has worn a callous from his constant "tapping" to buy this or bid on that. I am sure that most of you can relate to the excitment of taking part in an auction or picking that

2009 Lincoln Cents for only a penny each!!!

It took long enough.... Imagine my surprise, as I got my change at Waldbaum's (supermarket) this morning, when I noticed staring up from my hand was a 2009 Lincoln Cent. There was young Abe, sitting on his log, reading a book. Before the cashier could close the change draw, I quickly asked if she had any more "new pennies," and I got ten more. I'm going back later, when it's not going to be so busy, and I'll try to get a couple of rolls from the courtesy desk. So for those of you in the New

1883-CC Common Date GSA Morgan Added - Graded G4

So what's the big deal?? I recently added an 1883-CC Morgan silver dollar to my registry set. It's not uncirculated, it's not AU, it's not XF or F. It's graded G4 (Good). It's also worth 1,271 registry points...why? The Carson City Mint produced 1,204,000 silver dollars in 1883. In the 1960's, after being hidden away in government bank vaults for almost 100 years, over 3 million silver dollars were discovered, including over 750,000 from 1883. During the 1970's, these coins were sold to

UP GRADED PHOTOs

"I'm at Peace" has all new photos!!!!!!!!!! With alot of time on my hands this afternoon I attempted to take better (not different) pictures for my Galleries. Added the new 1863 MS64 IHP with no problem. Next I tackled my Peace Dollar collection "I'm at Peace" which thanks to you has been on the most viewed list for more than two years, most of that time in the top ten. So to all of you, I invite you back to check out the new pictures. You can now tell they are actually coins. The pictures are

Doing Things I Should Not Do

Coin obsession can eat you up. Greetings! Well, thanks to the recent purchase and arrival of my 2009 US Mint Proof Set, which by the way I am very proud to own, the coins look pretty good. The quarters are outstanding as are the Prezzies, the Kennedy Half looked a little mucky on one edge, though... I digress!! Anyway, thanks to the arrival of that set, I got myself once again deeply involved in the excitement of acquiring coins from auction. I HAD to look and see what kind of 2009 M

ANOTHER COMPLETE SET TO NGC!

A lot of bucks for a possible 42 point set? Hi everyone! 42 points is the lowest they'll grade. It's a 14 coin circulated series. I was going through some sets of world coins and realized some slots could be filled by some that I have amassed. I had to buy a few to get the set complete.(I have learned to accept whatever grades I get), but at least it will be 100%. I will be replacing my 1960 1c large date soon. I kept the one I had as a not so fond memory and a wasted grading. Sacs d

WHAT A SUPRISE I HAD TODAY

An Indian ambush a waited Talk about a steal I mean deal. I was reminded this morning that I had won the 1863 MS64 Indian Head penny that I had placed a bid on. What!!! Oh ya that impossibly low bid I had placed on this coin had in fact won. The bid was a place keeper so I could Track it and maybe make a last minute bid. It had then slipped my mind until the congratulatory email this morning Later JimL4004

My New Rarest Coin?

certainly a low-mintage One topic that I've talked about and thought about, more than a few times since I returned to this hobby roughly 10 years ago is rarity. I know that certain set scales exist ( sheldon scale for example) where the rarity of a coin is set by pure numbers of that date/type/variety believed to exist. And I'll stay off my soapbox about the term "rare" being used indiscriminately by about 2/3rds of ebay listings and hobby publication ads... My feeling has turned more toward

20th Anniversary binge

The wind blows the dollars go. This week it has been raining and the wind has been blowing here in on the treasure coast. Instead of fishing, which is my #1 hobby I have been shopping for eagles. I have aquired several PCGS and NGC 20th Anniversary silver eagle sets and and a couple of raw sets. I feel there are only so many out there and people are breaking them up and selling individually. These are my favorate eagles with the reverse proof in set. Now all I need to do is pay off my char

A PHOTOSHOT WEEK

Are all your coins toned? Friends; We all read about a society member selling their sets once in a while.I have wondered myself, more now than before what could I get and what would be the best direction to go for selling. Like all of us I would hate to part with a set I have probably invested over 2000 hours in for research and purchases. Not to mention total cost = unintelligent mistakes + what I now have in my set. I previously E-mailed around 40 dealers & our favorite 2 auction comp
