Environmental Damage PartII

Can you ever be sure? Hi everyone! I was just looking to see if all my latest submissions made 70s, when I saw cvcc's journal. I guess it happens to everyone sooner or later. I have done what I can to prevent environmental damage. These slabs, regardless of grading company, are not perfect. They do a fine job of physically protecting the coin, but airborne contaminants are just that. They infiltrate places nothing else can go. I see 2009 coins already toning in slabs.....why? They are

Enviormental Damage on an encapsulated coin?

What is going on here? In my last post I let everyone knnow that I purchased a toned Jefferson nickel, a 1939 Rev of 40 in a ANACS Holder PR64. Sent it in to PCGS for a crossover and I get it back in a body bag marked "ENVIORMENTAL DAMAGE". To say I was in shocked was an understatement. How could ANACS miss that? When and how did it happen? I have sent it to NCG for a clean up and off to NGC for a new encapsulation. I'll let you know.

Top in grade

The first in PF 69, but still #1 Hi all, I just got my 1st 1987 Loon proofs back. So far they top the chart. This isn't the greatest, but they do look good! Only a PF 70 can beat them. I'll take that seeing as how it is so hard to get any Canadian issue graded as perfect. I have more Canadian coins at NGC, but I don't even have to hope for a 70. All 69s are just fine. I have enough "perfect" coins to add this year. I can live with my lovely Canadians. Thanks to everyone that told me

Quality control????

How about getting what you paid for and accepted!!! A good axample of quality control is on display right now at heritage auction. A 1838 25C No drapery PCGS Graded MS 68 an currently listed to buy now for a paltry $280,000. Yes $280,000! Now maybe I missed something but it sure looks to me like the coin is in the holder upside down. 3 Quality control inspectors at PCGS. The coin owner. The consignment person at Hetitage. What am I missing?

11 more days

Waiting on my 30 day grades. Friends & Community; If you remember I sent in a submission that turned around in a week (amazed), I still have a 30 day submission out there that finals the coins (except 3) that I have purchased this year. I finally have a local coin show ( 1st annual ) that I will not miss and will probably join the club (Anderson area coin club). I sure hope I get my grades before I attend the show so I know which coins are still needed to complete the full set. I

It's (sort of) Like A Death in the Family

Feels like something is missing in the numismatic world this year Greetings!! I hope everyone has been well!! I have been busily working toward my degrees and have been learning a lot about myself in the process. One thing I for got about as far as college education goes is that a good course will change ones old process of thinking and will have you re-evaluating what you THINK you know. I recommend the pursuit of higher education whole-heartedly for everybody. I have been sur

Rode my BMW Motorcycle to a Local Coin Show Yesterday

Had my own milestones! Rode to Longmont Colorado for a local coin show at the Boulder County Fairgrounds yesterday. It was pretty busy and a bunch of tables. There was not very much gold available and most of what was for sale was modern. There was only one slabbed Half Eagle, an 1856-C. PCGS Genuine slab. So, I didn't buy anything. That's a milestone of sorts. But my real milestone was that on this trip to Longmont, my 1991 K75S motorcycle crossed the 100,000 mile mark! I bought it

A Milestone Passed

200,000 Points in the Registry Dear Journal: As much as I enjoy collecting coins, I also enjoy sharing coins and stories with other collectors on the Registry. While I don't particularly care where I am overall in total points or rankings on the Registry, I do enjoy competing on individual sets. I have been adding some coins lately, and one day, I looked up to see that I had crossed the 200,000 mark in total Registry points. I stopped in my tracks and did not add any more coins that day.

What books for Fathers' Day???

I need your help.... Hi fellow collectors, I would sincerely appreciate your help in selecting 3 coin collecting books that my children could get me for Father's Day. I have the US Coin Digest Redbook and also History of the US Mint. I know I want a book on Hard Time and Civil War tokens.... is it Fuld? Also I would be interested in Colonial Coinage. I also want the best book I can get on Early Bust dollars, halves and quarters. I have 3 kids "out of the nest" and on their own

Heritage & Teletrade

I agree with the other members that the pictures are misleading...and i think they are doing it on purpose! I agree with the other member that the photos are misleading, i dont really use teletrade but i am a long time heritage bidder and have noticed especially in the last few months when i see a coin up for sale that has previously been auctioned the image colors are not as they were the first time it went to auction....its actually easy to see this on heritage as you can check back when coi

Teletrade and Heritage....part 3, PCGS 1972-s MS-66 red

How can they do this to us. Thank you all very much for your kind remarks and thoughts. I do plan to return these 2 coins, and some others I just recently bought. THE reason I made this posting is to alert you, my fellow collectors of what I see as a big problem. The pictures I posted are my own, and show carbon spots or marks that are on the coins. If you go to Heritage in the first and second journal I listed, you will see the 2 coins and see how the pictures Heritage took DO NOT SHOW THE

A Tale of Two Submissions

Collecting Britannia's part three and other joys and laments. On my April 28, 2009 post, I reported submitting three 2009 Britannia?s for grading with all three returning as MS-69?s. As of today, the NGC population report still only shows four coins graded at that level. That submission proved to be very profitable for me. The first of the three coins filled the 2009 slot in my Britannia registry set. The second, I traded to another collector one for one, giving me a coin I needed at no extra

Similar problem in CT - no Puerto Rico Quarters

What's up with that? It's not just the P.R. Quarters that are hard to get either. More like impossible for that matter. I saw someone write that in another part of the country, they couldn't get Puerto Rico territorial quarters. I'm here to tell you the problem is widespread. I have a family member (an in-law) who works in a bank, and ALL through the program, she got me FOUR rolls of each quarter (two for me, one for my mother, one for my grandmother, and a couple dollars worth of loose

Teletrade and Heritage....

How can they do this to us? I buy coins online and noticed that lately the last few coins I have purchased from Teletrade and Heritage are not what the pictures show. I do not know if it is correct for me to post a picture of the coins from the site, but the ones they shown and the way the coin "really looks" is far apart. Yes that is correct! Now they can take a picture of a coin and either darken or somehow hide the marks, carbon spots, finger prints and make them magically disappear! I will

May in Review

Here is what went on with my collection in May Hi everyone...just a little note on what's new with my coins. May is another month where I didn't make a purchase to increase my collection. But I did have some positve movement though! I got some coins back from NGC....the Braille and Lincoln proofs that received 70s were added to my modern comm collection along with an 1988 Olympics that got a 69. The other Braille and Lincoln that received 69s were sold on Ebay along with my 2003 SAE PF-69UC

Any increases from here will be a bonus. Have a great weekend and I wish everyone happy collecting. Greywolf

Orrin Hatch Getting Lincoln Cents in Utah?

Does this fall into the "Strange But True" category of news stories? Well, after a recent posting, I've been asked to share the story. For those who are ANA members and who subscribe to The Numismatist (the official publication of the ANA), you may have seen this already in the June 2009 issue, p. 36, bottom left, entitled "Penny Pinching." However, for those who have not yet heard the story, or who are not ANA members, I am reproducing the article here, giving due credit to the ANA, the Nu

DMPL Morgans

How do you send them off to grade? I have a raw 1878-S DMPL (I think), and i would like to know how i should submit it. Should i just send it in as a regular submission or should i also purchase the tier that says "NGC will check for extras by request from the submitter." Can someone please explain that?

It may be old news, but Fractional Buffalo coins are GONE but not forgotten

First and last the same year, does that get us more for our money? In 2008, I had a decision to make, I could afford only one set of Gold Buffalo coins, Proof, or Mint State -- I opted for Mint State. I was just reading on the USMint.gov web site the at the following link: <a href="http://https://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?langId=-1&>https://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catal
