Circle the wagons and hunker down

Grading anticipation and introduction into the registry Everyone has their own method of viewing the economy and understanding of good and or bad times. As a truck driver I just simply look at the number of trucks on the road and get a feel for if the economy is growing or slowing down. And now, it seems to be slowing significantly. The same trucking companies are on the road, just less trucks and the frequency of passing them or seeing them on the other side of the freeway. So, how does this

Major Miscalculation?

coins are not easily liquid I am foremost a collector.... Having said that, I also try and buy with a respect to the idea that coins, unlike my other major hobbies of fishing, boating and vegetable gardening, have a definite monetary return potential. Well I don't have to tell most of you that we as a country are going through some tough economic times. I have seen many mentions here in the journals and also on the chat boards of people who have hit rough times and have had to sell some or

ANTICIPATION SUCKS-AND ITS A THREE DAY WEEKEND!!

STILL WAITING ON THE GRADES FOR MY TWO 1999 SILVER PROOF SETS AS I SIT HERE STRESSING, MY TWO SETS SIT AT NGC, IDLE. I WAS ANTICIPATING ON SEEING THEM MOVE FROM SCHEDULED FOR GRADING STAUS TO QUALITY CONTROL TODAY, BUT THEN IT HIT ME LIKE A MACK TRUCK THAT THEY WILL STILL BE THERE UNTIL TOMORROW, IT IS A HOLIDAY, DUH! I KNOW EVERYONE LOVES THREE DAY WEEKENDS, I DO ALSO, EXCEPT WHEN I HAVE A SUBMISSION AT NGC. I HAVE 86 COINS WAITING THERE TO BE GRADED, AND I HAVE ALMOST EVERY PENNY TO MY NA

Coin collecting by the numbers...

The craziest logic for selecting a coin/series ever! Well, I was looking for a nice coin to pick up to celebrate the end of the year and I got to thinking... I'm working on my 1st degree (my B.S.), I just finished my 8th semester and based on the grades I was expecting I thought I'd have a cumulative GPA of 3.75... and from this, I decided it would be cool to get a gold coin from 1875. Yeah... I'm sure that's perfectly resonable logic, right? Well, I went looking but quickly ran into a probl

P.R Quarters?

Just can't find 'em I have looked everywhere for the P.R. quarters and the best I have done so far is to be put on the waiting list at my local PNC bank. I don't know how long that will take. Apparently they have been hard to get everywhere. Also awaiting the Tyler dollars!

The $200 Treasure Hunt

This is a story about the everyday treasure hunt of collecting. I was looking through a dealer?s inventory of raw $2.5 Gold Coins. There were about 45 coins in the blue box. They were of all grades and both liberty head and Indian head. They were all common dates nothing too special. This box of coins appealed to me because of the relative affordability of most of the coins (all were under $700). I picked up a few and put them in a pile expecting to buy one from that pile. I had pulled out a b

Boxes of Circulated Kennedy Halves

Plenty of 40% Silver halves still can be found. Recently I have been getting $500 boxes of Half Dollar rolls to search for silver halves. Once in a great while, I find a 90% silver Kennedy but most boxes usually have 5-6 halves that are 40% silver. Just recently I came across a box with 50 silver halves and of those two were 90% silver. I was like winning a small lottery of sorts. Today, I found two Franklin 90% silver halves...one would think that all of been found. Its a relaxing way to

2009 P Proof Sovereign

I had to get one.. Apparently this will be an annual issue as well. Why will I buy them ? low enough mintage of 2500.. On the negative side they are costly, about the same gold markup as UK mint gold.. their 12500 etc sell out, so 2500 ? The 2005 Perth Mint sov with book had a mintage of 7500 and sold out. Lower price helped a lot, this issue is very popular. I have four of the "first 1000 struck" with books and felt bags

A Bit of a Scare

Sometimes we take our health for granted...but never our coins! Greetings! I have been a little out of the loop here lately as far as posts, but I have been checking in every day to see how everyone is doing. I have been a bit busy pursuing my degree and writing a lot of essays to that end, so I am sometimes left without much to say. I am glad to read all of you have been well, though and I have been entertained by the posts lately. I had a bit of a scare yesterday as I was passing blo

"Lofty Goals set for the next year"

I may be dreaming to think this list will be completed... Greetings Collectors, It has rained steady for the last week here in N.E. Florida and with all my current jobs being outdoors, I have had time to do a good deal of reflecting as to where I want to go with my sets. I think this was needed for me to get a grasp on not only my sets but my finances as well. In the last 72 hours I have gotten a few things in the mail and have won several other "lots" that have yet to arrive. This week I

FEEBAY MAY HAVE MET IT'S MATCH!

Want to list your coin auctions for free? Hello everyone! I found a place to go. Yes, there is a fee for the top perks, but feebay has no perks. It has become a place to plop your hard earned investment to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Listing fees, subtitle fees, 1 free photo, gallery fees, highlight fees.......had enough yet? No, you say??? How about the hefty "final value fee"? Next comes the "PayPal Only" coin transaction? Give me a break!( I kept it clean) I cannot

Another Nice Weekend...

at the coin show and sorting through my stash. My weekend last Saturday and Sunday certainly helped with stress relief. I normally work Saturdays, and then have Sunday and Monday off. Since there was a local coin show 22 miles away over the weekend, plus a big drawing at our local minor league baseball team game on Sunday, I couldn't resist taking a day of vacation on Saturday to go to the coin show. Since money is tight for me, I was not planning to make any major (over $100) purchases, but

My start with coins

At one time Buffalo nickels were plentiful. My start with coin collecting was due to being paid in coins as a paperboy. At that time the weekly subscription price was less than a dollar so, when people did pay, I would come home with a pocket full of coins. I don't remember who gave me the blue coin folders to start collecting the various pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters but each time I could fill an empty slot gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride. I remember looking at many early

QUALITY CONTROL?

I wish I had that job. Hello everyone! I just got two boxes from NGC. My little proof set(1960), and a few Canadian in the other. I got my 1c slab back with a gouge in the face of the slab. My Canadian, a hologram, has abrasion(slight) over the hologram. I guess when you try to get your coins preserved, and presentable, you need to send them in to be reslabbed a few times until it is right? No kudos for quality control today. Am I the only one starting to see this? Have a great day!

2009 Louis Braille Results

Final Grades posted... Now's the time to celebrate? My final grades have been posted. I actually did just slightly better than I'd hoped. My semester GPA was a 3.571 and the cumulative average managed to fall to just a 3.764. I think this means I'll make the dean's list this semester and it is increasingly likely that I'll manage to graduate with more than a 3.700 and meet the requirements for graduating Magna Laude. As has been the case 7 times before I've been getting plenty of congratulati

My recent US Mint experience

While on a business trip to Washington I am in Washington this week for business and after the working day is complete, I thought that I would go over to Union Station where the US Mint has a desk where they sell their items. Unfortunately, they have NO Puerto Rico quarter rolls or bags nor do they have the new Lincoln cent rolls. They were sold out and the man behind the desk said there would be no more. I was able to go online and order these items (although some are backordered). I was

Breen Encyclopedia for free!

I know, I know, nothing is free, but.... Just received my Priority Selections bulletin from Pinnacle Rarities and they gave the web address for Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins which can 'be viewed in its entirety online for FREE'. The address is www. breenencyclopedia.com. When I accessed the site it was being worked on, so hopefully it will be up to speed in a couple of days. There is a place to register your email address for notification when that occurs.
