Closer to finishing the Jefferson Proofs

Hard to do when nobody is selling... Well, it's been a busy week, coin wise. I purchased a toned PF64 1939 5C Rev. of 1938 in an ANACS small holder. It will be the lowest graded coin in the collection at Proof 64, and the only toned coin I own, but it was so hard to find! It is the first coin I ever purchased in an ANACS holder. I cannot decide to crack it out or do a straight crossover. I am going to send it into NGC for the cross over. I have only two more Jeffersons to find, 1940 Rev.

Half Dollar Mania

So far, this year I've purchased 3, all raw.   1 has been graded. The others will be on their way soon. The first one was an 1856 Seated Liberty which graded XF40.Now I have purchased an 1856-O (in-hand), looks to be an AU. It does have some toning as you can see from the images below. I'm hoping it hasn't been cleaned. And I just now hit the BIN button on an eBay listing. It is an 1899-S which also appears to be in AU condition. Only 1,686,411 were minted, which isn't a whole lot of this demoni

my other new baby...or should i say lady

Another different then usual choice for my collection but another coin i just couldnt pass up after seeing her...she may look familiar to a few people..... My other new baby i picked up this week is actually a lady....a Washlady to be exact. This lovely pattern quarter was struck in 1879 and although not received well at the time it is now considered one of the most popular and coveted pattern designs in any metal! This coin was the large single page pictured coin in the Heritage auction catal

My new baby's....crazy prices at heritage auction! sign of the times or just overlooked & lucky?

A couple of new coins for my personal collection....Last weeks Heritage auction...some of the "big boy" coins crossed at "little boy" prices? sign of the times or.... I just wanted to share with the society a couple of my new purchases, something a bit left field for me as i usually stick with high grade Charlotte & other branch mint gold. But before that i just wanted to know if anyone else saw crazy low prices at the Heritage auction, i must admit i dont look at every different denominat

"Lazy Saturday turned Coin Day"

The "Lure" of Gold & Silver never leaves me... Greeting Collectors, Started my day off at a customers job site to pick up a draw early this morning and to meet with a couple of rep's from the "homeowners association" who disliked the color the owners had chosen. Long story short, I will get paid a second time to paint the exterior of this 10,000 sq.ft.+ home located on the banks of the beautiful St. Johns river here in Jacksonville. While I did lobby on behalf of my client, to no avail

2009 W SILVER EAGLES?

Could this be the reason? Hello everyone! I was just looking at a few world coins and here's whats for sale in Italy. Only 10,000 minted, so we may have a chance to get a handfull for the W collectors. I didn't check the Chinese site.   I can only imagine. Have a nice day!

2009 Record Breaking low mintage of dimes and nickels

Check out Coin News website Good evening fellow members, I just finished reading about the US Mint announcing suspension of further production of 2009 dimes and nickels.   The figures are all published on Coin News website. I guess a visit to the local banks may be in order for the next few days to secure a few rolls just for the heck of it. Here is some of the news that I "cut and Paste" from the article: This is the news by Mike Unser / Coin News for Collectors: US Mint Hal

Are we having fun yet?

I've been so busy working on my Signature set.... I always (well most of the time!) enjoy reading the journal entries of my fellow collectors. You get my mental juices flowing, which seems to be getting more difficult as I grow older. A couple of observations are in order. From my perspective, whether a coin is toned or not does not effect its grade, only its eye appeal. I have some toned coins and some pure white and I have a hard time determining which I like better. See my 9/7/2008 jo

A good scientific experiment

I'm not going to do it, but it could put to rest the PCGS vs NGC argument once and for all. Namvette68's recent experience trying to crossover to PCGS got me thinking about how one could actually attempt to quantify standards at the two grading powerhouses with as much objectivity as possible. Crossovers, I don't believe, are an objective experiment, as the grading company knows it's a crossover, and that knowledge may affect the outcome of the grading process. Not saying that it does absolute

My trial set has been graded.

The results are in! Hello everyone! The trial is over. The 8 Sacagawea PF 70 coins I sent to PCGS for crossover are done! You all had your ideas and preferences. My $1,500.00 set is now a little less than $500. I will also lose a #1 Registry set this year. I hope everyone that gripes about the two grading companies, now has a different perspective.   Now you know why PCGS is more expensive than NGC. They have fewer 70s. Not a PF 70 in 8 submissions! "Toning, Colorfull or Drab, Is this not Damage?"

Why is some surface damage good? Greetings Collectors, Having just received submissions back from NGC and having a "negative" body count at #6, I have been doing some research and studying on the effects, positive and negative, to a coins surface. I have not cleaned or altered a coins surface in more years than I can remember. When I was brand new to numismatics I can remember taking a pencil eraser and polishing a beat up Indian head or Lincoln cent or various other silver coins and thinkin

My UHR story.. UHR arrives at NGC :)

Lovely book isn't it !! I actually opened my book when I got the coin about a week ago, and got someone to pick me up another book so I can put that one with the coin (thanks Sam again!) I agree, the book is SUPERB. The amount of information is more than I expected. It also filled a gap in the mystery of the test strikes, done in Australia it would have been done by my local Perth Mint, who make the blanks for the coin. The gap ? Perth mint struck a 4mm thick, "high relief" Koala once I es

My UHR Story (continued)

The book finally arrived! The U. S. Mint book that was part of the UHR coin set was delivered yesterday by UPS (with a signature required). I am impressed by the quality of the book and the interesting story of how this coin was produced. All in all, well worth the wait.

WOW HOW LUCKY AM I- FROM THE CINCINNATI COIN SHOW TODAY

I GOT #1/100 TODAY, MY FATHER AND I, THE FIRST TIME FOR BOTH OF US, WENT TO A COIN SHOW. IT WAS THE "Central States Numismatic Society 70th Anniversary Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio". AS I UNDERSTAND IT THE BUREAU OF PRINTING AND ENGRAVING CREATE A SPECIAL INTAGLIO PRINT FOR EACH OF THESE SHOW. THEY ALLOW YOU TO ENTER INTO A DRAWING FOR A COPY OF A INTAGLIO PRINT THEY HAVE PREPARED FOR THE OCCASION. THEY THEN ALLOW YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE ONE OF THESE PRINTS THAT ARE A COPY OF THE ONE

2 Brailles on the way to NGC

It didn't take a blind man to see this! Hello everyone! Just a quick note. I got both Braille Commemoratives this morning, and they will be at NGC tomorrow. Not for anything, but I have already accepted the facts of grading. The uncirculated is MS 69, and the proof is PF 70UC. The uncirculated coin has a lot of tiny dings. It may have too many for even MS68. All that wait, and I got a blem. Oh well....I can always upgrade on ebay for half of what this will cost me. I sent some old

Just got some grades back, and quickly, too.

Modern Tier must really be humming along right now. Received on Friday, Finalized on Thursday. Just wish the grades had been better. Sigh... I must be destined to never get a PF70UC with a Prezzie Proof. Got 4 PF69s. At least there was nothing less like last time. So, in Prezzie Proof submissions, I am running 0 for 3. C'est la vie. Maybe Millard Fillmore or Andrew Johnson will be kinder to me next year. Also, my Lincoln Commem came back PF69UC. Was hoping for 70, but can't complain. Great wor

Gold Sovereign Crack Out!

The Results of my Xover Experiement was somewhat surprising! I Submitted 4 Coins graded by CGS-UK and 1 each from NNC and ICG with the instructions to grade as NGC see fit. The main aim was to help calibrate the 70 Point Sheldon Scale used by NGC and the 100 Point Scale used CGS-UK. Prior to submission I had calibrated the main grades as follows: CGS-UK EF70 = MS60 CGS-UK EF65 = AU58 CGS-UK EF60 = AU55 CGS-UK VF55 = AU53 CGS-UK VF50 = AU50 And here are the Results of my TPG Xove

1970 s Double Die !

The Doubling is in the words LIBERTY. Hi, I've all ways wanted to find a Double Die that's the reason why i buy the $25 Penney box ( That and for Wheat cents and San Francisco minted cents). A few days ago I was Bord so I started to check and separating dates in San Francisco minted cents under The magnifier/lamp thing. I got to the 1970's and the first coin I picked up look kinda weird so i took a closer look and saw Doubling in the words LIBERTY. My First Double Die :>! Does
