I finally got some images -- Interesting Crossover coins

Check out the World Coin Sets for Australia, the "Kookaburra Silver Dollars, Including Varieties, Complete Set"   My set name is: Bully's Kookie Kookaburra'sMy set is hardly impressive at only 5%, with 7 coins I think, 6 of which FINALLY now have images! However, what I think may make this set interesting to some collectors, is the "crossover" collectibility to many of you as collectors of different things:What are they?Well, in the set I have the only five in a series (to the best of my kno

One of my latest acquisitions

It's hard to soar with the eagles when you're surrounded by all these turkeys! The teaser refers to some of the Morgan S$ I used to have in my possession before I went on this quality over quantity kick. I must be getting picky as to what I think a coin worthy of my collection is. A must in my Morgans is to have well-defined 1)hair over the ear and 2) breast feathers. Now please don't misunderstand me, any coin is better than no coin at all, but I have tried to upgrade my collection by buyi

"Storming Ahead With New Purchases"

Undecided as to if I am doing the right thing? I do think I may be ill... Greetings Collectors, As of this writing I have three submissions at NGC, with one showing, received and two "scheduled for grading". I finally got my three unc. & two proof Lincoln silver dollars last Thursday and sent the five off on Friday, looking for those "elusive 70's". I have not seen or heard of an increase in value for these in the "secondary" market. I do expect them to rise on account of the sellout

A picture is worth.........?

Just because you own the coin doesnt mean....... Hi everyone, I recently discovered something new. NGC certification verification has images. Nice images of the coin you are checking. NGC now images every coin that is certified and processed. That has wonderful meaning to those that require adequate proof beyond a reasonable doubt. This is amazing off-site data storage. The insurance companies will have to pay up now on coin thefts. The one thing I liked about the images, is that I

Remembering The Republic of Texas

Completing a set of Texas Commemoratives I think it was about 9 months ago that my step father and I were both glancing over auctions on eBay while talking on the cell phones together. We were still very much involved with working on the birthyear mint sets that are now largely complete. We had just arranged to purchase the 1932-S quarter that now resides in the 1932 set. We needed something else though because the 1932-S was less than $1000 and we needed more than $1000 to avoid a sales tax c

I found the same coin as TPeters did -- see his journal entry 4/6/09

Are there such coincidences? Hmmmm. You know, that is SOOO remarkable. Living many miles away, I got a coin that sounded different when I emptied my pocket -- and I know that sound -- it's SILVER. Sure enough, it was a 1964 Washington Quarter! What are the chances that we'd both get one of those in the same week? Wow! It's been a while since I got one too -- usually I am more likely to get a silver Kennedy Half (mostly because I go get ROLLS of half dollars from the bank and search th

Second Thoughts?

Almost reached my goal..... I've almost reached my goal for this year to be in the top 1000 in the registry. Now I'm looking at what I have and have decided to rethink goals for this year. I have spent the last two weeks or so looking over my collection in the registry, buying new coins, and getting closer to the top 1000. Today I decided to only add the top coins to my collection (Proof 70 and MS67 or higher). I've also decided to upgrade my current collection. So I have set a new goal to

This Years Mint Offerings Are Thankfully, A Bit Sparse

My wallet and credit score thanks the Mint... Greetings!! I eluded to this in a previous post here, and I realized today what a relief it is, really to have slim pickings from the Mint this year. I do miss the W's and the Proof SAE's so far, I am sure they will pop up in a few months, though. But, as a compassionate collector of coins, I did find myself barely able to keep up financially with the offerings..MANY offerings from the Mint in the past couple of years. It seemed every ti

Speaking of Obsesive

I'm going crazy waiting for my submission My order was sent in three weeks ago. I thought that I had become "patient" since my last submission, of last year. NOPE!! Not yet anyways. I was fine untill my order was sitting in quality control for over a week. Now the story to this is a little confusing, so let me explain. When I submitted my order, It was a ten coin submission. Now, I just had to get this one certain coin cross graded, I just had to. You see, it is a Canadian 1968 silver PL-10

Patience Pays Off

a wonderful upgrade Unlike my Mercury dime short set which I considered done when all of the "slots" were filled with MS67 coins, my Walking Liberty Half Set may never get completed. I have been wating for a truly special 1941-S to fill the last blank slot, however this won't "finish" the set in my eyes. I'm not sure what criteria it would take for me to be perfectly contented with the set. I also had 2 MS64's still in the set...I've passed up several chances to upgrade because I've

Well Done NGC!!!

If you haven't already, you gotta see this! If you haven't tried NGC's certification lookup/verification lately you have to check it out. Not only does it verify the coin cerification for you as it always has, it also provides a direct link to the NGC census report for that coin, shows the Numidmedia price AND, if the coin was encapsulated recently enough, it actually gives you small and actual size photos of the coin you have just looked up. In the two examples of coins on ebay I looked up

Auctions - Bowers and Morena

Apparently they are in at least some shows, the official auctioneer of the ANA... So, the big question is this: Has anyone here consigned coins with them to sell? And if so, how has your experience been? Also, I'll ask generally what KINDS of coins did you sell? Was it all OLDER coins like pre-1900 gold and silver, is it primarily PCGS or NGC too? Does ANACS hold any place? Older ANACS to be precise... Are moderns of any kind a factor? Were bullion items of any interest? Even s

A Slight Diversion

A few coins that (*gasp!*) aren't made of silver. Ok, well, I've been really enjoying working on my signature set the last 2 months or so but I also have a few other projects that require a little attention from time to time. It occurred to me the other day that I still had not acquired the new William H. Harrison presidential dollars for my mint state set. I have all the 2007 and the 2008 dollars in MS66 FDI and I don't like to fall too far behind when making sets like this. I also naturally

New Lincoln Mint rolls can yield a MS-67?

Can you get a MS-67 coin or 2 from a Mint Roll? Hey everyone, did my share of ordering coins from the Mint in the past and sending them in looking for a treasure or 2. I think it has to do with the ruff handling and coin wrapping machinery? They must ruff up the coins to the point of killing any chance to get a super gem out of the roll! Maybe the Mint is handling the coins better? But if they make so many and change the design so often, I think they rush to much and don't care about maki

Waiting on the Lincoln 2-roll penny set from the US Mint

Ordered within 3 days of release... The wait is killing me here. I first didn't really have the desire to order any of the 2-roll Lincoln penny sets but changed my mind on 3/16 and my order has been "In stock and reserved" for over a week now and can't even cancel it if I wanted to. I called the Mint and they said the order is still valid and is waiting to be shipped.....waiting for what??....     2009 LINCOLN PROOF SILVER DLR 5 $37.95 $189.75 In stock and reserved 2009 L

My Grades Are In!

My raw old coins purchased this year all were slabbed!   Not a single bodybag! So I sent in: 1856-P Quarter Eagle, earned an AU50.1856-P Seated Liberty HAlf Dollar, earned exactly what I expected, XF401899-O Barber Quarter dollar, did in fact grade AU55 as predicted by Dean Heard. I thought 58 but no, 55!Overall only the 1899-O quarter was a disappointment. Not bad for 110 to 153 year old coins! The 1899-O quarter and 1856 Qtr Eagle raw again!

Baltimore Show Summary

Naftzger cents are still available if you have the $$$. We had another good show in Baltimore two weeks ago. One of the things I wanted to do was see if I could find any of the Naftzger middle date large cents. I had looked over the auction results and identified a few that I'd consider buying if I could find them. It was no surprise that Chris McCawley (CVM) had quite a few for sale. While a couple tempted me, none were among the select few I was looking for. I found several others in a coup

Hey! Ya never know

Beauty is in the eye of the NGC holder? Hello all! Just a quick note, and scan, of my first PF 70 submission. It's the 1986 Statue of Liberty 50c. It wasn't such a bad deal. It cost me $5.50 in an airtite. Another $20 bucks for shipping and grading. Voila......a $106.25 beauty. My Abes made MS&PF 70 also. Am I happy?....you betcha. Well, I just thought I'd share some good news with everyone. Thanks NGC, Amy, Lisa, and Sarah? I know there's a lot more! Good luck everyone

The Coin of the Month for April

And the coin of the month for April is... an 1814 Large Cent. This is the Crosslet 4 variety and is graded EF-45 by PCGS. Well struck with only a few tiny circulation marks barely visible without magnification. Dark chocolate brown with smooth frosty surfaces.
