On the way down

Short lived being in the 500's. Good Afternoon, I started at 592 and in 6 days I am already down to 597! But that's how it goes. Up and down. I have been trying to get to the 500's for over 1 1/2 years. I know that isn't that long, but it takes a lot of work and time to get to this point oh yeah, MONEY also! I decided today that I was going to find a way to get solidly into the 500 range. I placed an order for the 2006 20th Ann. Rev PF70 I think I paid a fair price for it. I will now be a

I found the NGC census for the UHR today

They're not in the American Gold Eagle catagory What I noticed today is that NGC changed the .9999 Gold Buffalo catagory to .9999 Fine Gold Bullion coin. You will find the UHR's in there (both Regular and Early Releases census reports) Happy collecting! Jimmie

I Just Bought The 09 SAE

Early Release MS 70 for 134.00 WOW!! Talk about compulsive!! I went ahead and bought a MS 70 ER SAE for 134.00, and I am glad I did actually. With a census of only 1627 compared to 17,000 MS 69's, I felt I would only be doing myself good by pulling the trigger on this. I believe, who knows for sure, but I believe I will be seeing this coin escalate in price farther than I can even imagine by next year. The Mint has not even minted the Proofs or W's so far, and they are not eve

1896-O Morgan Dollar

A big boost to my collection I finally received my 1896-O NGC MS60 coin today. I am so excited that I finally have a coin in my collection that is some what rare. I recently came into some extra cash by selling off all of my least desirable coins. Eventually, I realized that I had started collecting different type sets. I came to the conclusion that I should concentrate on only one set at a time, my Morgan dollar collection. I sat around for 2 weeks thinking whether I should buy multiple

The Impending Busy Time Ahead

Starting Summer semester soon, new coin pics Greetings! I am contemplating a very busy time coming up as I work full time, go to school part time, and continue to upgrade my photos and add to my collection of SAE's soon. I also will be ordering the Prezzie Proofs as well, I love that series. In the meantime, I have been getting my mind ready to get back into school. It has been a long time coming that I get myself back to finish up my degree. I plan on attending for about another 5

I like Ike too

The jack of all trades, master of none (or very few). In seeing the I like Ike reference, it reminded me that my Ike Proof collection is one of the VERY few Registry Sets that I have actually completed at 100% -- with a couple of other Ike Proof Registry Sets at 90% completion rates. I never got an elusive PF70 Ike, but as the previous author indicates, the PF69 grades UC (or in one case for me, CA), are reasonably affordable coins to complete a set, the second shortest dollar series we've

My UHR Story

Here is my story... I have been reading in these journals about other people's opinions and experiences with the new Ultra High Relief Gold $20, and wanted to add my story. I knew that I wanted one of these once I first saw the promotional photos. I knew that the US Mint order process would be paralyzed the first day, so I wanted until the next day. I entered my order on-line on January 23 quickly and without any problems. Within a day I received an email saying that the ship day would b

Fun Weekend

Spending time at a non-coin convention I've spent most of this weekend at a local gaming/anime convention that is held at my university every year. Before I started college, lost most of my free time and found coin collecting I was a gamer. This is great fun to me even if I don't get to indulge in it often. Ours is the largest and oldest student run convention in the country. This was the 40th year. Those of us that know what it is are quite proud of it. We like discussing coin auctions here

Respect in the Market Place

What happened to honor, integrety, respect? A couple of months ago, I sold a coin on ebay to a fellow who, it seemed from the start to be a little sly. Now, I sell a few coins on ebay, mostly, coins that don't make the grade for my sets. I've never had problems before, so an expert in sale issues, I am not. This time though, it seemed that he just wanted to buck the terms of the sale from the start. Firstly, let me tell you about the terms of the sale. The item was to be paid in U.S. dollars,

So-Called "body-bags" from NGC

Increase? Good question. My initial answer would have been no, and that many people won't submit the coins to NCS anyway. What I find to be a twist in how this question was posed is that the submissions included coins that were either in NGC holders already (which seems to me that they SHOULD BE subject to the NGC Guarantee), or were in original government rolls/packaging. Now, depending on the OGP, damage can occur. I don't know what it was, but the reality is that much OGP was not de

Has anyone else seen an increase in BB

Is the creation of NCS prompted NGC to put more coins in BB? I have been sending in coins to be graded for years now. I have also been collecting coins for over 30 years. I think I have a good eye for problem coins. Recently I have have sent in some coins to be graded that in my experience had no problems, including moderns right out of the roll. Of my last two submissions 6 have come back in a BB, 3 of those were broke out of NGC holders. I don't know if it is just me but, it seems that since

Moving up in ranks

Jack of all trades, master of none (or few anyway) Well, as of today, this week I had moved up in the overall rankings from 73rd position to 69th. For fun, I checked to see what kind of scores there were between me and the top rankings, and they are staggering. However, the difference in scores between me and say the "Top 50" are not so intimidating. So, long ago I think my goals were to get to the Top 100, then the top 75, and now I will aim for the Top 50. For the most part, I think

Capped Bust Half Reference Book

My copy of "US Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836" by Don Parsley has arrived. This is a really cool book on Capped Bust Half Dollars. I should be able to attribute die varieties using it. This will probably open a whole new world of CBH's for me. The hard covered book has nearly 800 pages with black and white pictures of die states on every page. This is my real first coin reference book.

The Lincoln 2-roll Birthplace Cent sets from the US Mint (SOLD OUT)

As previously mentioned by another author, and in another journal entry of mine, the Lincoln Cent roll pair is sold out at the Mint's web site. As the other author, I am SHOCKED by this. I mean, considering these are not making their way to banks at all, I can't believe that the Mint is not marketing more of these for sale, I mean seriously -- they are a HUGE mark-up item for them, charging $8.95 for two rolls of 50 cents each, one each for P&D. That said, there WAS a limit of 5 per h

The End of a Seemingly Long and Interesting Journey

The final word on my Ultra High Relief. As I am writing this journal, my Ultra High Relief is on its way home with a grade of MS-69, Early Releases. Once home, it will be photographed and taken to the safe deposit box, ending a seemingly long and interesting journey for me. One of my final acts will be filling out the survey the mint sent me on the ?UH1?. While I am a little disappointed with the grade, getting a 70 is like winning the lottery and totally depending on the coin you receive f

No Brakes

I'm running up ranks so move over. March 1st I didn't have a clue what was going on, or a job. It sure slows down the purchases of my collection. My coins are now graded 50%-o k grades.I've been working 3 weeks, my wife was glad to get a 1500 dollar check for bills. My 50s proof sets will auction on www.proxibid April 1 with western auction. I guess the set I'll miss the most is 1999s silver 9 piece they were beautiful.Anyway got my grades--got my job--doing the auction--have 50 more coins to

Thank You, Wonderful Webmasters...

... and the other NGC staff members. I don't know what I'd do without some of this site's features. I was working on adding a slot to my sig set earlier and it just hit me: I have no idea what I would do without the ability to quickly and easily change the slot order in that set. I'm constantly adding new slots that I want inserted into the middle of the set and I recently completely re-arranged the set to make it more organized. The feature that lets you modify the slot order lets me do these

The mint is sold out of 2009 Lincoln birthplace cents.

I have no idea if they will have any more for sale. I will call some banks and see if any of them have any new rolls of these cents. They should be showing up there by now, right? I have not see coins like this disappear unless it was the 90% silver coins that disappeared in 1964. That was when word got out that all silver coins were being replaced by coins with the dreaded "metals other than silver" inside it. All silver coins virtually disappeared from circulation overnight. And our coins

Easy on your Credit Union

Most Credit Unions, maybe none order from the Federal ReserveHere is the way I understand it from talking to tellers all the way up to the Federal Reserve.Credit Unions and smaller banks are not set up to replenish theircoin supply with the Federal Reserve. They recycle the supply. With today's economy, they have more coming in than going out so the next step is to go to a bank that does order from the Reserve.Bank of America and Wachovia both order from the Fed. Dishonest Dealers - buying raw coins in general

You aren't the only one who has been burned I saw the previous posting about buying raw coins on eBay, and even specifically asking the sellers if the coins had been cleaned. Now, the first seller adamantly saying NO strikes me as a refund waiting to happen, at least in accordance with ANA guidelines, if the seller is an ANA member. The second seller claiming ignorance since the coin was part of a large estate strikes me as being "Reagan-esque" during his questioning when the answer of th

I can't get Lincoln Cents either

I'm in Connecticut, so presumably we have a different Federal Reserve Bank than Dallas. I also deal with a credit union primarily, so I am not sure who their supplier is, but they actually told me "why don't you try a commercial bank." Needless to say, I am composing a complaint letter to the credit union's advisory board expressing my concern that not only a teller, but a representative (in writing via email) would tell me to go to a commercial bank. My complaint? If I should go to a comm
