Collecting Britannias

Strategies for building a top rated set! One of my favorite coins to collect are silver Britannias. The reason I like them is that they are allegorical, featuring ?Britannia? the national personification of the United Kingdom. Another reason I like them is the design changes every year based on a single theme, ?Britannia?. However, another more nostalgic reason is my wife?s British heritage. You can imagine my delight when I found that Collector?s Society added the series as a competitive set.

Raw 1899-O Barber 25c is in-hand!

Actually, it's a bit nicer than the photo in the ad. Now that I have the 1899-O Barber Quarter in-hand, I can see that it is not, IMO, uncirculated, let alone MS63. However, it may be an AU58. It is somewhat dark but there is a lot of lustre and the lustre is only broken on the obverse. When you tilt it in the light, there is a golden color to the toning and it is on both sides. I will keep it and have it graded (and hope it isn't AT or cleaned, but I am pretty sure it hasn't been cleaned).

Nice people do exist Two days ago, I recieved a box in the mail. I raised an eyebrow. I pretty much know when and what is arriving in the mail to me. I keep pretty close tabs on the coins that I purchase. Well, on this day, I was BAFFLED!! I got home and opened this box. HMMM, three really nice early 1970's specimen sets, in leather cases. OH boy, the sender made a mistake. For one, I only know the ebay seller by the store name and only chatted by email once maybe a year ago. Never bought anyt

Naftzger, 4 of 6

Skipping to 1836 After getting my 1834 cent in the Naftzger middle dates sale, I took a breather. I had spent half my available funds on three nice coins, and I didn't have a target 1835 in mind. I already had an MS66RB that I bought after seeing it at the Summer 2005 Baltimore show. And frankly, none of the Naftzger 1835s appealed to me enough to put money into them. None of them had a slab grade as high as mine either. So I waited more than 50 lots before bidding on some 1836s. The coin I

WISH ME LUCK, LUCK AS IN HITTING THE LOTTERY. MY KIDS EAT UP MOST OF MY INCOME, NEXT TO THE EXPENSIVE WIFE I HAVE. GOD, I HOPE I NEVER GET DIVORCED, SHE IS GONNA TAKE ME TO THE CLEANERS. HER MOM ALWAYS TOLD HER TO GET MARRIED SO SHE COULD GET ALIMONY. UH-OH SHE CAUGHT ME WRITING THIS, NOW I'M IN TROUBLE, PRAY FOR ME!

The mint shipping UHR Double Eagles ~ Not exactly first come first served!

I had ordered my UHR double eagle on the first day it was available on the mint's web site and finally received it on Friday, March 6. Of course! I rushed it overnight to NGC to beat the March 9 deadline. Just saw the post from David Fischer that he had ordered on the second day and received his coin almost 10 days before I got mine. I did go through a similar experience of getting 'delayed' e-mails from the mint and had nearly lost hope of being able to obtain the 'early release' designatio

Beyond Frustration

Invoice date Jan 23/09 I think now I am beyond frustration. I have had my coins setting in NCS from Jan 23 and after checking almost everyday it is a bit much. I wonder has anyone else had to wait this long? I just hope and pray that the wait is going to be worth the result. I guess, I don't expect miracles, but right about now one would be welcome, so I can get on with my collecting. Well, perhaps the good Lord is trying to teach me patience? This month will be a long one if nothing happens s

The Roosevelt Dime - A few musings from a collector.

Why all the points? I've often wondered about the point structure on the Roosevelt dimes and considering a recent post about lowering these points, I thought it might be time to interject, as I too thought that they were a bit out of touch. However, all you have to do is submit a few of these diminuitive coins for grading and I think most will find out just how tough this series can be on the collector. First and foremost it's easy to get caught up in luster and ignore a few obvious fault

RE - EVALUATIONS!

Dimes and halves.......quarters? Hello all! With all sets getting re-evaluated, can the Sacagawea $1 be far behind? With a "FYOI" pedigree, will our soon to be (11 coin) sets be recognized for the completeness they represent? I know there'd be a lot of irate Sac set owners if they did acknowledge them all. There are 3, 2008 MS Eagles though. Type in any of my "green label" 2000 Sacs, and see what comes up. The defense rests!! Happy collecting!

Full torches can drive you mad

Strike is 100 times more harder to find in the same grade I have went to coin shows and looked until my eyes hurt trying to find only full torches.Pickens are very slim.As soon as I flip the coin over,if the torch looks bad in anyway,I discard it.I dont care even if it would make a ms68. 99% of all my roosevelts are full torches.I still wonder why a ms68* has about the same points as a 68ft.Alot of people say to look at the population report.Population report has nothing to do with it.More peo

UHR Double Eagle

Waitng for the mint to send UHR was agony! Today I logged on and found that the UHR coin I submitted 2 weeks ago was graded MS70! YEA! But waiting for the mint to send the coin was torture! I had ordered my UHR the second day of ordering and kept getting notice from the mint that it would be delayed. I got a total of 4 notices and I was thinking that I would not be able to get the coin in for an "early release" certification. I barely made the deadline and I really feel for those collectors th

I should have waited!

Robert Chambers is alive and well. Hello everyone! Yes, Robert Chambers is alive and well. "Coin Vault" still is too. Finally he has the 2009 Lincoln Commemorative dollars in PF and MS 70. At a decent price too? I should have waited. Mine have been out for weeks. So now I should have the lowest numbers in existence? I dunno. I invested a lot of money to get the first coins into NGC and out. I can see this is not the way to go. I could have saved all the hassle, $75.00, and got the

FLABBERGASTING!

Impressions of images and impressive images. Hello all! WOW! What great response from all corners of this great society. I have heard and spoken to so many people since I joined than I would have ever imagined. This scanner thing is really a door/eye opener. I only tried this new technology to help myself to show off my meager attempt at coin collecting. I guess my pride in ownership and competitive nature have had something to do with this. Just as I thought my new scans were great, I

RE; emergency brake

Well its been a ride I finally got my grades on coins sent in. A couple good ones and the rest medium and I put them in my sets. The other coins I sent for grades finally got there so in 20 or so days I can add those to my sets.I had sent some coins in for auction but they moved this month. They did e-mail me and said I would see sales by end of the month. I have wished I kept all 1950s proof sets but I do need the investment for my morgan dollars sets. Lincoln GEM!

Only 15 of these gems as of 3/6/09. Now I own one of them!!!!!! This one had been on ebay for about a month and a half, varying the type of auction and the price. I have been staring at it this whole time, wanting, aching, yearning to buy this probable once-in-a-lifetime coin. I wanted this coin so badly to go into my mom's 1947 Birth Year set. Except for one coin to be upgraded and the four yet to be purchased, it is an all NGC MS67 set (one MS67 star designated dimes as well), nearly per

Sent Five Proof Roosevelt Dimes to NGC

This time I took pictures of them to help me choose the best ones to send in. I have recently started a Proof Roosevelt Dime set and I am trying to find the best coin that I can for each year. I decided to send some of my Proof Roosevelt Dimes to NGC for grading and had 12 different coins to choose from. I thought all of them could get a PF-70 UC designation from NGC. Boy was I wrong. I had taken pictures of all 12 of my dimes to help me make my decision on which ones to send in and to m

I almost forgot.

I know my scanner is OK, but.... Is this dime worth anything to anyone? I found it in change, and it is in "fine" shape. It's up for grabs. If it is only a "blue" album coin, I know a small boy that might like it. Thanks

Imaging for beginners.

I was asked a question......I'm a beginner too! Hello everyone! As most of you know, I have not been a member for a long time. I am new at coins. I am also new at trying to convey the closest images of my collection. Digital cameras, digital microscope, lighting hoods, scanners, and alike. They all work and serve a purpose....to a point. Some of you know my dilemma...PCGS slabs. They wouldn't scan on my Lexmark All-in-one. I experimented for months and ruined a lot of eyes with sub-pa

Kennedy Proofs

1998 S Specimen Hello, everyone. I am working on a Kennedy Proof Set and there is a coin on there called the 1998 S Specimen. Could anyone give me a hand on exactly what that is? I have looked on the websites where I buy my coins, but I have never been able to find one listed. Does anyone know where one could be purchased? Thanks for your help.   Happy Collecting!

New Purchase

As if Draped Bust Large Cents weren't enough of a challenge... I'd been eyeing Tom Reynolds' website for a few weeks with an interest in his colonial copper offerings and saw he added some new inventory tonight. Having no luck recently in my search for 1940s Mercury dimes or 1803 large cents, I decided to "splurge" on a VG 1787 Connecticut copper. More details when I get the coin in hand, but this is my first time purchasing a coin sight unseen, solely from the dealer's description. I'm sur
