What an incredible coin collecting weekend!

It just does not get any better than this! What an incredible coin-collecting weekend! NGC and Collector?s Society are the best. I sent three submissions to NGC for grading. They posted on the web site as received on Feb 16. I made one world submission and two US submissions. The world submission posted finalized/shipped Feb 20 and the US submissions posted finalized/shipped today. The turnaround time at NGC is incredible! To top that off, I am delighted with the grades my coins receive

Looking at an 1803 Large Cent, among other thoughts

why didn't I post a picture? maybe next week... The Mercury dime set is languishing for lack of material that meets my set requirements. I can see the effects of this already as my ?ranking? slips again. Fortunately, I know I will never be in the top 10 or 20 ? so this is not a worry, but it would be nice maybe to break 50? That may not happen either. Reading the journals regarding PCGS coins in an NGC registry is very interesting. I can understand both points of view and, obviously, I

Your Sales Thoughts

First thing first, I will not sell anything to anyone as a result of this posting. We don't want to revisit that issue same as a few years ago, right Amy? By the way isn't Amy the best? Congrats to all who continue to have an outstanding opportunity to continue to build your collections in these difficult times. I find myself a touch jealous and extraordinarily sad. I was never a top 3 guy except in a few peripheral areas that really anyone could be, like Modern Proof Set 21st Century, and

NGC/PCGS ? IT'S ALL SIMPLE MATH !

Plus and minus.....that's math.....isn't it? Greetings to all you "coin" collecting people! Well, I'll add some more fuel to the fire. Today I listed a PCGS set of the 2009 Territorial Quarters with "flags". A plus. I already have an NGC set without them. NGC doesn't do flags. A minus. I have a set of "W" designations on my 1999-2001 NGC quarter slabs. A plus. PCGS doesn't do "W"s. A minus. I am sure glad that NGC allows me to have(and show)both sets without hassle. A definite plu

Chief Two Moons

when your dealing with 30K coins a different slab can mean thousands

yes i believe you should buy the coin not the holder but when your dealing with 30K coins & those that do know that a PCGS slab can bring in many thousands more then the same coin in an NGC slab i always believe you should buy the coin not the holder...thats the advice we have all heard...but in reality there are prob 50% of the hobby that dont know how to grade a coin, dont know if its cleaned or not etc etc, these people buy the holder...what else could they do when you don't know any be

Thoughts for a Lincoln Roll Checker

to search or not to search....that is a heck of a question... Here is a question, and a thought for all the roll searchers out there. Do you roll search to find that elusive double die Lincoln, from 72; 83; 84; or 95? Do you spend you free time, on Saturdays and Sundays looking through all the nice rolls of Lincolns trying to find those elusive Wide AM?s from the 96; 98; 99; or year 2000? Or are you just pulling out the copper ones for later meltdown and that big profit when copper goes to

If i were made to cross over i would leave....

In response to RareSov stating that PCGS slabs should not be allowed in the NGC registry - hows that a competition when you only compete against half the people.....that's NGC Registry's appeal!....dont ever loose it because someone is unhappy because a PCGS set is beating him This is just in response to RareSovs last post indicating PCGS slabs should not be allowed on here..............if i were made to remove coins from my PCGS slabs just because some person thought its a bad idea i would b

Are there any PCGS Genuine coins in the competitive sets ?

Are PCGS Genuine slabs identifiable in any way by serial ?   If you enter a damaged coin in the NGC registry using only its serial number, what happens ?Hopefully the problem coins are kept out automatically. If not, then what to do ? they could a) Disallow PCGS coins from the registry. Give a coupon to anyone who wants to stay, and crossover at a discounted rateI don't like this idea either, but just because I posted it doesn't mean you have to start insulting me..b) Allow NCS coins, and slash

Chief Big Tree

End of the Trail Chief John Big Tree (2 June, 1877 ? 6 July, 1967) (birthname: Isaac Johnny John) was a member of the Seneca Nation and an actor who appeared in 59 films between 1915 and 1950. Big Tree claimed to be one of three Native American Chiefs whose profiles were composited to make the portrait featured on the the obverse of the United State's Indian Head nickel, designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The other two chiefs were Iron Tail and Two Moons. Big Tree claimed that his prof

Chief Iron Tail

Chief Iron Tail Iron Tail (Sinte Maza) was an Oglala Sioux who fought alongside Sitting Bull at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He also performed with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during the 1890's and with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West show from 1913 to 1916. He died of pneumonia on May 28, 1916 while traveling by train to his homeland, the hills of South Dakota. He was one of three models James Fraser used for the Indian Head nickel.

James Fraser, and "B.D." himself! Black Diamond was not a ?model? model!... Legend has it that James Fraser picked Black Diamond, a buffalo who lived in New York's Bronx Zoo, as the model for the nickel he was designing. You'd think BD would be honored, but he refused to pose! He kept turning to watch Fraser draw instead of standing sideways. Fraser had to get a zookeeper to catch the animal's eye while Fraser snuck around for a side view. (US Mint Fun Facts)

I've Got Plaque!!

I love the mail today!! Greetings! Not to be a journal hog, but after my last entry I checked the mail and found the Best Journal Award plaque that NGC awarded me this year. I am proud to have the award and I am really really humbled by the honor of receiving the recognition here, and I am very proud to be a member of the Collectors Society and to have a great collection and stories that go along with my collection. Thanks to all of you who do read my ramblings here and who look at

Raising Dust Part II

There's a little bit more too this than I had initially thought. Someone on the chatboards with a little bit more knowledge on this subject than I gave me some additional information on the Mexican Libertad series. It looks like there's a few more varieties than just the 2 that I thought I needed to chase down. The breakdown he provided looks a bit more like: 1982-1989: Small Diameter; Lettered Edge 1990: Small Diameter; Reeded Edge 1991-1995: Small Diameter; Low Relief 1996-1999: Larg

Two Additions & One Upgrade

A very nice start to a year I didn't think I'd do much. I have a set registered in the Proof Quarters, 1950-1964. The first of the year saw my ranking in that category as number 46, which is well down towards the bottom of the totem pole. Recently though, I had the opportunity to add two very nice quarters to my set, and I upgraded one other. I added a beautiful 1953 Proof 68 and a 1959 Proof68Star. Both are just beautiful. The upgrade was, I believe, quite spectacular. I had a 56 Proof 67

The New Prezzie

A new twist...sort of Greetings! Well, I went on a bank to bank run yesterday to try and find the new Lincoln pennies and was (finally) informed that even though the banks around here tried to order them, the Treasury was not shipping any out due to the amount of pennies in circulation. This is the story from a teller, anyway. And I tend to believe what he said due to the fact that I went to about 5 banks and none had the pennies. BUT I was (finally) reminded that the new Prezzie was o

ANOTHER MINI MILESTONE "W"o"W"

The set I never thought was possible........it's complete! Hello to everyone! The mail lady brought me good news today. There was a "new" New Hampshire, and Virginia, silver "W" coin. To fill the 1999 silver slots, I had to cannabalize another set, but such is the sacrifice. I have achieved another mini goal. As some of you may remember, it all started with me finding the first and wondering what the "W" meant. According to NGC, not anything anymore. I find them unique, and now I h

Census

The new Presidents Just wondering if anyone out there knows any of the census reports on the new Presidental coins that have been sent in. NGC does not show anything as of yet for the new coins. As I am looking to purchase the new coins and just curious what the census is on a couple of them, but you know what they say about curiousity right!

The 2009 Native American Dollar

Check out your local bank! In the general course of my usual week I'll stop by my local bank (Bank of America) and purchase about $10 in dollar coins. They work better in the vending machines at work than paper money, they don't crease, tear or generally get stuck in the changer!!! It's usually fun to see which of the small size dollars show up. I see about 25% Anthony's, 40% Sac's and the remainder are Presidential's. I, of course, look through them for the known varieties and usually find no

Nearly worthless coin

And some people say that the cent is useless... There has been discussion in the news about the usefulness of the cent coin. The cost to make a cent coin in the US has exceeded the value of the cent for several years now. Several nations in the Euro zone have effectively eliminated the 1 and 2 euro cent from use. Eventually the US cent will go away as well. Below is a photo of a 5-cent coin from the nation of Mauritius, a small island to the east of Madagascar, that is still in circulatio

I frame post & beam houses in the mountains of South Carolina. I have a few hobbies but I wanted one more and that became the morgan dollar set. I have been to shows, auctions & read countless amounts of material on the subject. I never thought it would be so time consuming and educational. Now that I think I know everything I just enjoy finding a good coin once in a while for my set.I started out with a set of four rub down dollars you couldn't read.
