Long Beach Coin Expo

Things really are slowing down. I have just come home from the Long Beach Coin Expo. It was a very nice trip, save the weather. As I Perused the tables various dealers, I couldn?t help but overhearing their conversations with each other. Most were hopeful; however realistic and a common theme was "Well I'm making sales, they are just harder to come by." I also think the trip changed how I feel about how I have been spending my money. Now I think I will try for a good Peace set. I have stayed

Another Slow Week

Lincoln Commem Coming Another slow week coin-wise, but that's ok. The Lincoln commemorative silver dollar goes on sale Thursday - that coin looks very nice! I think it is one of the nicer commemoratives issued in recent years and a proof version will be sitting under the Christmas tree this coming December (along with the usual proof set as well). This has been a good week for reflecting on the coins I have gathered over the years and my plans for additions. The prospects of not just havi

Hi Dad, this Morgan's for you

I didn't know my dad collected Coins until he passed away... I just upgraded an 1889 Morgan dollar today and it made me think of my dad. He collected Morgan and Peace dollars, though of low quality and stored in Whitman coin books. None-the-less, I swear I still enjoy looking through those books more than looking at my "slabbed" collection. He had an 1889 that was so worn that you could barely make out the year it was minted. You know what? I love that coin! Frankly, the pair, an MS-67 V

What Gives?

I don't understand how the US mint operates or in this case doesn't What gives with the US Mint? My UHR double eagle order status was listed as "in process" and the coin listed as "in stock and reserved" with an expected ship date of 2/6/09. Today 2/6/09, I get an e-mail from the mint stating my order is "back ordered" with an expected ship date of 2/21/09. Which is it? I thought in stock and reserved meant they have my coin and need to ship it and back ordered means they do not have my coin ,

Off to see the Mint

Well, it used to be a mint, anyway... My Wife and I are leaving tomorrow morning for a trip to New Orleans. One of the top destinations for me will be the old US Mint. I don't know exactly what to expect when I get there, but just the thought of being in the building has me quite excited. I'm hoping that I might find a replica of a Confederate Cent or Half Dollar, assuming they have some kind of Gift Shop. It might be a replica, but I think it'd make a fine memento of the occasion.

Territory Quarters

They are on the way!! My 2009 Quarter set is on the way. I bought the set for a very reasonable price and it was shipped yesterday! I new as soon as it was announced that they were making them that I went on the hunt to find them. It took me a week to locate them for the right price but it paid off. I got the set for $17 dollars per coin.(6) Not bad! I also got a great deal on the 2006 Silver State quarters. Picked those up for $15.50 per coin. Both sets are PF70! I am trying to get the

OUT OF THE ATTIC

Two Families' Histories, World Travel, and World Coins My grandfather was the first of 3 generations of Merrill's to work for a wealthy family in the small mid-west city where I was born and raised. Grandpa served as a butler, chauffeur and a cook. Between his wages and the hand-me-downs (unwanted clothes, food, etc.) from Family "X", he provided well for his family. Grandma was the first in our family to attend college. She obtained a teaching degree from Pittsburg State College (Kansa

RE: Did you get yours??

It may be on the way, but then again maybe not!! The order status on the UHR I ordered says "in stock" but no shipment date. However, the mint has been busy sending e-mails. I received no less than 3 this week with 3 different estimated ship dates. It will be here when it gets here, not all that concerned. The price is up $100.00 from my purchase 2 weeks ago and that's always a positive.

Coins are an exciting way of life!

Non-collectors would think we are stupid... I'd like to say that I don't get the same "Submission Fever", henceforth known as SF, but alas I can't say it. My latest submission has been in QC for 2 full days, with today being the 3rd! The suspense is killing me and I've hit the order status button 20 times in the past three days... If we're not careful the CDC (Center for Disease Control) will be contacting NGC about a widespread epidemic of SF and their part in perpetuating a nationwide out

Back in the game!!!!!!

Here we go again Hello to all, After 30 years I am back to collecting coins!! Growing up in the 60's was a wonderful time to collect coins, back then you would get a handful of silver every evening when you emptied your pockets ( and I saved it all!!! ). By the 1970's I had quite a large collection of coins mostly war nickels, silver dimes, quarters, halfs, dollars, and a very nice lincoln cent collection (including a 1909 s vdb that I paid $95.00 for in 1968). When the hunt brothers tried to c

The Outrageous Incompetence and Thievery?

? of the United States Postal Service Most of you who have been around and reading these posts for a while already know that I have precious little faith left in the US Postal ?Service? (if it can be so called). Well? here we go again. I ordered a coin from a seller late on Friday. The seller is a great guy and apparently he got the coin shipped out on that Saturday. Most people here know what the ?tracking? is like with USPS, but I was thrilled this morning when I saw that the coin had been

KUDOS TO NGC!

And I thought I was fast! Hello everyone! I just got a nice email from a fellow member. I also got a nice email from NGC. My 1958 proof set that I sent to NGC for grading(1/26/09)is ready for shipment. WOW! They have impressed me with a turn around like that. I know it won't happen like that always, but I have to say I love it. I expected several weeks and perhaps a bunch of non-grades coming back. I only submitted 5 coins. A 1958 proof set I had never opened. After 50 years I will

Now That Was Fun!

I may have to change my name. This past summer, at the ANA show in Baltimore, the Goldbergs had some of the Ted Naftzger early & middle date large cents on display. His middle dates are the best set of die varieties ever assembled, with many finest known examples. His early dates were sold in September, his late dates will be sold later this year, and his middle dates were just sold Sunday - yes, during the Super Bowl. During the ANA show, Bob Grellman suggested to me that it would be g

My UHR Double Eagle

Looks as if the earliest ship date is Feb. 6 The order for my UHR Double Eagle chimed in at 7 minutes after the hour, meaning that mine should be amongst the earliest ship dates. I have an expected ship date for the coin and book of Feb 6. I will post a new journal when it arrives at which time I will send it off to NGC for grading and early release designation. It may be a blessing in disguise that mine has not been shipped yet. If my coin ships on Feb 6 it will fall into a much more convenie
