Looking at Mercs

An Update and a Reflection As an update to last week's journal - no, I didn't get the MS65 Mercury dime that I wrote about. Overall, it was a good coin, but I kept going back to look at the reverse again and again. Something just wasn't right, at least to me. There were a couple of dings, scratches, marks, I don't know what you would call them, to the fasces below the middle of the three bands. I just wasn't happy with that. When you look at a coin, and the first things your eyes notices

My Thoughts on the New St. Gaudens "Coin"

Not to be a journal hog, but I had to write this.... Greetings again... Yesterday afternoon I received in the mail a special brochure regarding the new St Gaudens gold coin. It looks like nothing I have ever seen so far as the dimensions go on a coin, and I applaud the Mint for trying to do something different. The coin is thick enough to have "E Pluribus Unum" on it's edge, and I am sure the technology and the artistry in making a coin of this type is impressive. But, to me, it

Coin Photography and Presentation

I have been working on this for quite some time... Coin photography can be very frustrating for me at times. The reflections from the plastic grading slabs or GSA holders are difficult to get rid of. Camera focusing is not always sharp. Presentation is awkward and difficult when working with square pictures and round coins. It goes on and on. Through a lot of trial and error, and a little help from others, here is my latest...I really like the look.

Thoughts from the Dog Walk

Surprisingly, mostly good things are on my mind.. Greetings! This morning I decided to take advantage of some spring like weather we are having here in Salt Lake City and take my dog "Gracie" out for a 2 mile round trip stroll. Usually as her and I take our stroll, I am busy trying to figure out the hows and whys of life, but today, I was finding myself more connected with the beauty of the mountains that have been snow covered for months, and the empty streets that Saturday mornings br

HOPEFULLY???

My sets are getting bigger....... but. I am having a lot of trouble trying to get a good photo of my PCGS coins. I don't do a real good job on the NGC slabs, but they will, at least, scan.....to a point. I am so far behind in my descriptions and images. My sets are becoming infiltrated with PCGS slabs, and I am not happy with scanning them. I would like to represent all the coins in my set, so I am striving to achieve a passable photo. So far, I have only invested about $45.00 in lighti

2008 Registry Award Winners

Amazed my set won the 2008 Signature Set award for "Most Creative" I had just returned from a short term mission trip to Brazil on January 13, on January 14 I linked up to my signature set "Inspirational Ladies" for the first time in about two weeks. To my surprise, I saw the "2008 Most Creative Signature Set" icon on my set listing. A sudden rush of joy, surprise, pride, and a bit of disbelief overcame me. I still look at my set listing and the judges comments next to the award icon on the wi

Got the grades from my latest submission

Some good, some bad, some ugly... First off, I have to talk up the high points. Out of the 36 coins I submitted, I got back 8 PF70 Ultra Cameos. Not too shabby. Also managed to get my first PF70 Sac Dollar. The other 7 Sacagaweas I submitted all came back PF69UC, so I'm glad to have at least one 70. I also got 70s on the following: 1992-S and 2008-S Silver Roosevelts 1992-S and 2008-S Silver Kennedys 2006-S Clad Colorado Quarter 2006-S Clad North Dakota Quarter 2001-S Clad Rhode Isla

Considerable delays expected with Ultra High Relief G$20

Our favourite modern coin store MCM has this to say The United States Mint is experiencing delays in getting the necessary planchets to strike the 2009 Ultra High Relief gold coins. No one knows for sure, but we believe that by mid year quantity will be readily available. However, near term supply shortages are almost certain at this point. Therefore, we do not expect to begin offering these for sale until late February or maybe even March. Despite the official release date of January 22nd, we

Coins Are The Cure

who needs a pill !! I'm not a big believer in all the syndromes that are constantly being invented to sell drugs to us. "Twitchy Eyelids?"...."this could be a symptom of a syndrome that some independent laboratory has determined may kill you if left untreated !!" Fortunately for us, they usually have discovered the pill or treatment to cure it before the syndrome was identified. As cynical as I may sound about other peoples restless legs and irritable bowels...I actually do have one of these

My NGC Submission Arrived Home Today!

Mixed emotions on the results... Greetings Collectors, Well I was able to fight off the temptation to look at my results and waited 'til the package arrived and what I ended up seeing was a little dissapointing. Two of my coins which were suspect from the git-go, having purchased them for not a whole lot more than melt came back in flips being noted as having been "improperly cleaned". These two were the $2.50 & $5.00 liberties, 1893 and 1892 respectfully. I really hate it as these t

What A Nice Piece Of Silver

I found a smart buy, And a stroke of luck too. Two weeks ago on ebay, I found a listing for a 1953 PL Canada quarter. No biggy if you don't know what I am talking about, so I'll explain. The 1953 Canadian PL quarter has actual unkown mintage of somewhere around 1000 piece, divided over two different varieties. Now the question is, how many of each have survived and were not put into bubble gum machines by someone's kids. Only 16 of one kind and 123 of the other have been graded. Thus she is a

FUN pick ups and Coin Contest

Acquisitions from FUN auctions and free contest on Coin Network. I picked up a few additions for my Peace Dollar Set and Proof Kennedy Half Set. I was surprised (and happy) to win the Peace Dollars, since I put in low bids. The Kennedy Halves were some PCGS PR70DCAM coins from the mid-1980's. It's interesting that these are much easier and cheaper to find than the NGC PF 70 UC coins from the same years. Over at Coin Network, I started a second Free Contest. The first 50 members are automatic

Meet the new Boss, same as the old Boss

Watching the circus of economic stupidity unfold Watching the circus of economic stupidity unfold over the past several weeks has been an accurate indication of how desperate the authorities have become. The powers that be are trying anything and everything to avoid the coming collapse of the US economy. They have pulled out all the stops in an attempt to fix the problem. But the fact is they are the problem. And in the end we're ultimately going to have to deal with the consequences. They

All Gold and Platinum Submission Finally "finalized imaged & shipped"

Haven't looked at the grades...yet... Greetings Collectors, My Collectors Society year anniversary always falls in late Nov. so I usually send a few coins off a couple weeks later, this time on Dec. 17th. I have quite a few raw coins but the majority are in the form of mint and proof sets 1950 and newer, mint rolls of silver eagles, state quarters, presidential dollars, nickles ect. I know that I need to get some of them graded if I want to complete my sets for loved ones birth years. T

I Thought That NCS Had Killed My Coin

I Got a reponse about my missing orders. Well, I got quite a few responses today about my orders. The first was from Amy, telling me that my 1973 Canadian large bust quarter was still in conservation. That was nice, I felt good. Then When I checked on my 3 orders, they were all finalized and shipped. YA HOO! I started checking and confirming my grades. I thought that It was strange, with the one order, after all the one coin was in conservation still, OR WAS IT? Maybe they got it done. Without
