Key Date for Classic Head Half Cent Series

1811 C-2 R.3 1/2c VF-20 I have been looking for a nice circulated 1811 half cent for several years. This coin was graded by PCGS as VF-20 and it is very solid for the grade. The C-2 is slightly more plentiful than the #1 Variety. Most 1811's, if not worn, are corroded. The Mint reported a coinage of 63,140.

The FRACTIONALS Will RETURN!!

I am ultra excited to have heard this... Greetings!! I have to admit once again that I am a coin show (that is TV coin show) junkie. I can sit for hours and listen to whomever the host is on any given show show and sell his coins. I don't ever really get tired of it until the host says something absurd, or does the ol' hard sell thing, or says "now listen guys" too many times...but I am getting off the subject. I also tend to hear things on those shows that either confirm certain rum

First Journal

Not much to say, it's my first journal I've just recently dove back into collecting. Intially i thought i wanted to find a nice specimen of each type and see where i'd go from there. I'm finding that might not be the course i'll choose however. I'm too interested in so many types i can't decide what my next aquisition will be. I'm thinking i may go after collecting a uncirculated set. Something complete yet recent. Of course the cost of such a collection is a factor. I believe i will start a J

Sent off another submission.. that makes two now, more to come

Previously I sent my proof Canberra florin which should be delivered to NGC any day now.. Today I sent my 1855 Sovereign which should receive XF, fingers crossed. Also in the package were some Gilded Kookaburra, and Subscription S$1 proof. I have requested this set 1996- date in the forum, it is a fabulous series and one of the most anticipated releases each year. No coin in 2001 so only 12 coins so far. A full set of 12 could be had for maybe $700 raw The coins have varying mintages and v

Should I start a Signature Set?

I have a lot of decent candidates. I just never really thought about creating that type of a set with them. My NGC-graded collection is entirely US Coins. Some might say too much (my Wife, especially), but I enjoy them all. However, I do have a number of non-graded coins, in what could be defined as a Signature Set, except that they haven't been graded by NGC. Now I'm starting to think about using my 2009 Coin Budget to investigate getting some of these coins slabbed. I thoroughly enjoy coll

My Coins are on the Way

The old familiar feeling of anticipation looms... Greetings!! This being my 1st day back to work from a long (and much needed) holiday weekend, I had much to do but also found time to get to the postal office at lunch to send my coins to NGC. I anticipate they will grade well, and I am already planning on my next submission mid February that will consist of my Morgans (2) and a Peace Dollar, and (2) Pennies..one of which is an error with the rim double stamped. I wanted to get the M

I need a verdict!

Keep it or replace it? I just received a pair of 2008 Bald Eagle half dollars in NGC grades, MS and PF 70. The proof is already toning. Is this desireable? Should I replace it? Should I protect it from further toning(Intercept Shield), or let it go on toning? I keep all my coins in Intercept Shield boxes to prevent this, but I need at least another opinion. See what you think.

Loving and Hating Coins

or maybe I'm just jealous of everyone who has coins that I may never have This is a good sign. I?ve actually posted a second journal entry and the first for 2009. I think I have a love/hate relationship with coins. I love coins ? classic US designs especially (although I?m not a type collector). There is a lot of history in the coins. The designers, engravers and various other mint workers left their marks on each coin ? especially the early coppers. When a coin is uncirculated I marvel

Superior Auction - JHF Roosevelt Dime Set

Results change the way the series is perceived? I watched in amazement at the prices some of these dimes brought today. More amazing may have been the dimes that didn't sell because they did not meet the reserves. Is this what the series needed; positive exposure at an under rated series that can be very challanging? In my mind, I think that my set is much more valuable today than it was yesterday. I also think future purchases may cost me more. But on the other hand, if I choose to sell the

My Decisions on my Submitted Coins

Was Easier than I thought... Greetings!! NGC Helped me decide what I was going to submit for right now, actually, as I wanted to use my coupon for the 5 submissions, and I did not really want to submit all of my coins in the tier that we use for the free submissions. So, for now I am sending my 08 W SAE, my 08 Proof SAE, 08 Bald Eagle (skinny chicken) comemm uncirc., 08 Bald Eagle comemm Proof, and a 2001 Silver Eagle MS state coin. In a while I will send the Morgans, and the pennie

A Complete STEEL ...

... cent set that is. Well, this weekend one of my hopes has been to get the last coin I needed for a complete 3 coin steel cent set from 1943. Part of my problem has been that I wanted nice looking MS67s. I didn't want MS66s and I didn't want coins that looked like they had "gunk" on them (I know, really specific aren't I?). Well, this weekend there were 2 such coins ending at auction and 1 with a Buy it Now. The buy it now was somewhat higher than I wanted to pay (though it did have a Best

Getting Coins Ready for Submission

Not sure yet just how many I am going to send... Greetings!!   The holidays and subsequent days off have done me a LOT of good as I have been able to re-new my coin fervor and concentrate on my self and the things I like to do lately. On Friday, my job was to get the pictures into my registry. Mission accomplished!! On Saturday my job was to figure out which coins to submit. Failure so far.... though I know I am going to submit my 08's (SAE's) but I don't know about the com

1st Acquisiton of the New Year!

A PCGS AU50 1832 Large Letters Capped Bust Half Dollar- Updated photo! Picked up a nice Capped Bust Half dollar that is relatively rare as PCGS has graded 111 of them and NGC has graded 21 of them. 4,797,000 minted of 1832 total and an unknown number of them are the Large Letters variety. I bought the coin on eBay for XF dollars. I was ready for the snipers but they never swooped in, so I feel I did real well on this purchase. I expect/hope that this year I will buy more vintage coins, mos

A New Year Has Started

I hope 2009 will be better than 2008 Well, 2008 was a very bad year for me and I know that it has been tuff for everyone. The poor economy has forced me to sell at least half of my collection of certified and raw coins. It was really a downer, but it had to be done. It was hard for me to let go of these coins and it turned my attitude towards coin collecting sort of sour. I was ready to trash this hobby altogether. During the holiday season, I had a long talk with myself and decided that I d

A New Direction or just a subtle turn.

Food for thought Now that I have over 25% or the early commemoratives. I'm sure that the ones I have are the ones that are more easily acquired. Now to make it more interesting for the remainder I'm going to try and obtain only those coins, in early commemoratives, that have mintages lower than 10,000. Since I came to that conclusion, last week, I've picked up one and it's a 1935 Texas with a mintage of 9,996 and a grade of MS65 but looks MS67. It truly is a remarkable looking coin. I have b

New coats that don't fit to well. - Breaking Out Part VIII

I think it's time to stop the breaking out. Well, here we go again. I broke out 4 more odd slabs and sent them in with some raw coins. I'll get to why the new coats don't fit but first the results. This coin was purchased raw by me from a Stacks auction a few, make that several, years ago and sent to ANACS for grading. It's a 1806 Ireland proof farthing with frosted design items and mirrored fields. I was thinking PF-65 cameo. ANACS sent it back as PF-63. Bummer. I had it reslabed in thier new

Beware of the USPS (A Sincere Warning)

The ultimate nightmare for a small scale seller in tough economic times. This is a genuine warning for all of you who are shipping things via the USPS. Here's the scenario: I had a rather nice gentleman offer relatively fair prices for coins I have to sell, again due to finances. He offerred me what amounts to a break even price on several coins. Total value $1,111.00. I stayed home from work, shipped via Priority Mail, with insurance and signature confirmation. I handed the package to

May 2009 Bring You Joy, Success, Prosperity, The Ultimate Coin, Happiness and Contentment

With 2008 behind us, it can hardly goe any more sideways. I feel very fortunate to continue to be a part of this community. We are a special group of folks. Many of us are chastised by those who are unfamiliar with the intricacies of coin collecting. Many people are also unaware of the beauty of the things we cherish. Whatever your pleasure is, at least you have one (as do I). That's saying a lot more than what others can. We set goals for ourselves; goals to pursue within our means, occ

I've Finally Done It ( the last page )

I didn't think that I had that much to say!! Here I am Now. Jan. 2, 2009. My 1953 PL dime has been graded, but not sent back. I did get notice that it graded well. Not the dream number, but second highest out of NGC, PCGS, and ICCS. It came back as a PL-66 Cameo. Absolutly nothing to cry about. It is now in my set ( no picture yet ). I've got a good solid lead in the top spot, but there is still work to do. Hopefully I can retain the lead as I have with my 1953-67 Canadian PL quarter set. I kn

I've Finally Done It ( 2 of 2 )

The 1953-67 Canadian PL dime set. So, to continue. Buy November now, after getting help and all, what do I do. I'm just going to be short, and what do I find on EBay, a 1967 PL-67 dime by PCGS. The excitement is back, I've got my second wind I CAN DO THIS! Now, I am 27 points on top in first place, and am I excited. But wait. If I show my hand too soon, he could top my 27 points, I'm too close. So, I wait. While I'm in my waiting mode, and it is eating me up, come on, I just want to get them a

I've Finally Done It ( 1 of 2 )

A difficult task to get to the top and have the number 1 Canadian 1953-67 PL set. Boy what an adventure. First though let me wish everyone HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! It has been quite the task this last year to complete this set. Although, it isn't technically finished untill I upgrade a few and get that last, almost impossible coin to get. I'll keep working on it. I thought that this was going to be pretty easy to make this set. The coins were out there, and reasonably priced as well. I'm kind of c
