An Early Present

My auction acquisition arrived quickly Greetings!! While being submerged in the bad economy as a family this year, there has had to be many sacrifices made and things wanted, but gone without. But, fortunately, about a week ago I was able to get a little bit of fun money and made a bid on auction for the 1990 Proof Silver Eagle that caught my eye. I won this on auction and was not expecting it until after the holidays, BUT in a rare Festivus miracle event...I got it in the mail on D

THE GIFT

Merry Christmas, Collectors! Virtually all children are born with the gift- inquisitiveness. Their "gift" can be a "curse" to nearby adults who are harangued with the constant "why, why, why". Some lose the gift, with time; some set it aside. And, some of these reacquire it later. In numismatics, I call these people "Collectors". We, collectors are blessed with the gift of looking at a coin and being able to see the beauty, rarity, oddity, history, uniqueness, and perhaps most important

Did my Ears Decieve ME???

No more W's? Greetings! I almost gave this post the title "NO MORE W!" but the double meaning about politics is something that might have offended some here. So, I was watching "CSN Coins and Collectibles" last night and the host was tauting the 06,07,and 08 W's and said "It's OFFICIAL, there will be NO MORE W's!!" Now, I have watched enough TV coin shows to realize that sometimes the truth gets a little stretched, and the hyperbole is at times a bit...thick. But I somehow have a

Silver American Eagles...Proof I started collecting these beautiful Eagles in 1999 and have been getting them ever since. I also received 3 coins from my dad...2 from the 80s and 1 from the 90s... after he passed away. I have had 14 of these graded by NGC and had some great luck with 8 of them coming back PF70UC. Not too bad considering I only purchased 1 proof SAE a year from the mint! The most impressive coin has to be the 2006 reverse proof eagle. Not just for the eagle, but for any c

Silver American Eagles...Mint State This collection I didn't start until this year and I only owned one of these eagles before 2008 and it was just by accident. It came with 2006 Anniversary Collection that I purchased because I wanted the reverse proof coin. But when I started going through my coins in the beginning of this year, I looked at the only Mint State Eagle I had and I went head over heels for it and made my first "intentional" MS purchase from the US Mint this year and never look

A great year of collecting! Modern Proof Commemoratives2008 was an awesome time for me collection! I went from a casual collector buying coins from the US Mint to being more serious about my coins...buying from different sources, educating myself about grading, joining the Collector's Society, and having coins professionally graded for the first time. This year I purchased 79 coins already slabbed and I have had 41 raw coins graded. I want to break this down into 3 seperate journal entries so I

On Winning and the Consequences

Everything seems to have 2 sides... Greetings!! I have struggled for the past 3 years in fantasy football to draft and maintain a winning team, and finally this year, with hard work and a little luck, I have succeeded in winning 1st place in my league...which has made me ecstatic. I could go on about that, but this IS a coin web site, so I make my point that the same weekend I won the football league championship, I also won a really great Proof Silver Eagle on auction for about half th

Good News !!!

heard from a missing friend Well it has been a tough year in many ways for some in our little community. Economics has been tough on many-- Several have had to pause in their collecting while others have had to sell part or all of their collections to pay for more pressing issues. Some of us have had medical issues and some have had to deal with the hardest things one could face--death of loved ones. I did get good news from 2 people, I know that a couple of the people that I send messages t

Merry Christmas "To Me" II

Happy updates to SAE PF 70 set on the way Ol' St. Nick was sure nice this year. 2 more coins toward my goal. This set is a tough one. I wonder if I'll ever complete it. 2011 seems like the soonest given what remains. Regardless, it's great to see these latest entries. There's always pride is closing some of the gaps in a set. 1999-P ASE PF70 UC 1997-P ASE PF70 UC Happy Holidays! Cheers! RBG

Merry Christmas To All

...and to all a collecting update! I can't believe it's only a few days till Christmas. It seems the last couple of months have flew by, with my work, my mom being in the nursing home & hospital and my collecting interests. I do want to wish everyone in the Society a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Even with all that has went on the last few months, I do count myself blessed; with my family, my friends here where I live and my online friends here in the Society, and all the nice peop

A Collector's Journey

Is it the hunt or the acquisition that gives the biggest thrill? Since my first journal entry, I've found myself looking at what others are writing; many acquisitions, anticipated submissions, questions, comments, and a small glimps into the minds of fellow collectors. In my bio, I reminisced of my beginning into the world of numismatics. As a child my search was limited to frequented stores and shops, and as my allowance allowed, banks for rolls of pennies, nickels, and dimes. My thrill was

Happy Holidays to All!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, S'alaam Aliekum, or if none of the above apply to you, then have a great New Year. Here's to another year gone by. To all of you, thank you for all of the wonderful journal entries that have kept me thoroughly entertained, and may this be the year that you get that coin you've always dreamt of. And if this isn't that year, may you have many more years to keep trying. Bruce

My Latest Acquisition!!

Just won this on auction tonight!! Great news!! I just won a 1990 PF 69 UC American Silver Eagle on auction tonight for 27 dollars....about half of Numismedia pricing for the coin. I am very excited to get the coin and to add this to my Proof registry. Also happy that I have won 1st place in my football fantasy league, too. It has been a great night!!!

Anxiously Awaiting.....

An auction end, and my membership package... Greetings!! I know that I am entirely back in the game due to the anxiety and thrill I once again feel about my membership here and the things to come. I found a good coin on auction that I am awaiting to see if I won. Pretty good deal if I can get it for my max bid. I'll post any news about this when the auction is over. I have also rounded up my coins I am going to send in for submission in high anticipation of my member packet to arriv

2008 NGC Registry

Thanks! Just discovered the registry this year and prior to this, coin collecting was getting stale for me. Now I have found it fun again and the competition adds a whole new wrinkle to things! I have met so many other collectors! Thanks NGC for a great thing!

ROTATED DIE ERRORS?

What amount of rotation does it take to qualify? I have a few 2006 Franklin Scientist Commems in mint state. The reverse is not square to the obverse. I would like to know how rotated it has to be to qualify as a mint error? Does anyone have a Franklin with this mint error? I have asked several local dealers and collectors, but no 100% positive answer. The set I have registered has a pretty square obverse in comparison. I attached a scan of the typical rotation. Is it considered an error?

NGC adds photo imaging to certitfication.. hurray !!!!!

Great addition ! http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=1147 This is just great.. I cannot put into words how important this is Best of all, free, fully integrated, and with server side file security everything is thought of.. to counterfeit a NGC coin now you need to a) see the one you want, in holder, with serial number b) produce an exact copy of the holder, label, hologram sticker c) also produce the coin in the same condition, right down to visible bagmarks, ton

1809 C-4 Lg/Sm 0 NGC AU55 Classic Head Half Cent

VERY RARE HALF CENT This 1809 C-4 Lg/Sm 0 Half Cent just arrived today. Ngc graded it AU-55. NGC has only graded 6 of these with the highest graded being a AU-58. The zero of the date is repunched so that it appears to be a circle within the zero. This hub flaw is sometimes referred to as a die break. Scratches are on the slab and not the coin.

Another perfect 10?

It only took 1 coin. It only takes one coin to make a complete set. I have added that coin to my Sacagawea 9. I only wish the 477 points would be added to it's score to acknowledge it's totality.

Merry Christmas Neverman

You keep posting anything that your heart tells you to........ I just wanted to tell Neverman and to everyone else that reads these journals to have a very Merry Christmas. Neverman you just made me think about someone other than myself and Im going to go out right now and do something good for someone else and not expect anything in return. This is a great time to give of ourselves and realize that we can find comfort in the hobby when ever we choose to come to these boards and read what it i

That Old Familiar Chill

And the (lack of) hope for the new year... Greetings! I have just arrived home after attending my aunts xmas party (she lives in a group home as she is deaf and mentally challenged) where the directors announced there will be some really steep cuts in the medicare funding this coming year, making an already tight budget even tighter. I looked around the room noting the many special needs people , most in worse shape than my aunt, and was troubled that they may be going without the meds
