Elusive VAM Discovery Part 3

My quest for my first Morgan dollar VAM discovery It has been a while since I last wrote. Work and holidays have kept me away from my hobby for a while. As an update, I was able to secure my first Morgan Dollar VAM in late October of this year. Amazingly enough, my first discovery was with a coin that I purchased solely to fill a void in my NGC registry. I had no other intent or thoughts about this coin when I purchased it. Going over a set of coins in early September I noticed something int

Pictures In My Registry

This is a promise kept to myself, and time well spent Greetings! Well, having taken a vacation day today as I found it foolish to return to work for one day after a holiday, and becoming slightly restless,I decided to keep a promise to myself and add photos of all my coins in my registry. This took some trial and error, and a copious amount of my time as I do still have dial up, but it was well worth the effort. Though probably not the most wonderful photos displayed on any of the

I think I've been shilled....

and I'm kinda ticked off about it. Earlier today I noticed 2 sets of some items I want for a set I'm making. They were ending 5 minutes apart from each other at around 8:30 (my time). They had a reasonable starting price ($49.95, free shipping) and no bids. There were also 2 sets available for a BIN ($69.95, free shipping) from the same seller. I decided to bid on the first set and wait. I bid $69.90 so I wouldn't pay anymore than the BIN sets. At about 45 minutes before the set ends, someon

*!*!* Happy New Year 2009 *!*!*

New Years Resolutions... I've spent a good amount of time these holidays looking at peoples sets and reading their journals. It's pretty cool to see what people are doing and what their interests are. I also like seeing the shared experiences and patterns we have. Now that 2009 is upon us, I have been reflecting on 2008 and planning what I'll do for 2009. I'll narrow my focus a bit this year and concentrate on completing the sets I have started. I may try and fill out my buffalo's. I wi

When is it OK to get a 'D'?

Reminds me of my high school foreign language grade. The last time I felt good about getting a 'D' was my freshman year in high school when I was afraid I might have failed Spanish I! In this case ,however, I am ecstatic about acquiring my first D mint mark (for Dahlonega, GA). An 1849 G$ PCGS AU-58 for my great-grandfathers set. Happy New Year!! Dan

(Another) End of the Year Retrospective

Let's hope the next is better... Greetings! Happy New Year everyone!! It seems that whenever a year comes to a close I tend to get sentimental for the past, and very enthusiastic for what the future might bring. I found myself more "out of the game" than I wanted to be this past year, with no real additions to my registry, a lapse in my membership here ( for awhile anyway) and a bad case of writers block that left me with not much new to add to my journals, though I did try to kee

Dear booksandcoins

Please enable private messaging, I cannot send you a message You should purchase a 2005 Australia proof sovereign. It has the exact same reverse as the first sov. It has a book by sov expert Andrew Crellin, a nice chunky book full of detailed information about the settlement, the setting up of the mint, the Adelaide ingots, Adelaide pounds, and the 1855 Sovereign (and other sovs) It is a must have. If you are lucky and patient you can pick up these slabbed with FIRST 1000 STRUCK, and velvel

1855-1870 Sydney (Australia) Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns

Numismatic Interest in pre-1870 Sydney (Australia) Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns My current numismatic interest is in pre-1870 Sydney Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns, I have only a few of this unique and beautiful coins minted at the Sydney mint, before British Royal Crown established Sovereign standards. Would like to know more about them, why they were minted in Sydney instead of Adelaide, or Melborne, who designed it, and who & where the die sets were made. If you have similar i

About to submit what will probably be my last submission

It's a big one, too. At least for me.... Submitting 36 coins. All proofs. I'm really hoping to get at least a few outstanding grades. I've got a 1992-S Silver Kennedy that is absolutely stunning, and a 1985-S Jefferson that I'm sure won't disappoint. It's a shame to say that I won't be submitting any more, but when it comes to Modern coins, I'm just not seeing where it's paying for me to get them graded vs. buying the grades I actually want, or can afford. However, I'd bought these with the id

whats happened to the chat boards

BUT there is no option ANYWHERE to logon. so... I tried sending a message to NGC and you get the standard hurry up and wait ap-cray... finally, you get an auto generated message saying you need to send them all the info and

The First Four Years

A Boring First Journal After 25 years, I realized I had some money to resume collecting. I decided to get some gold, which I could never previously afford. But at my first show, I fell in love again with large cents. I decided to assemble a date set from 1816 to 1857 as nice as I could afford. Before too long, I was stretching for some pretty pricey pieces (for me that means into 4 figures), and strayed with another old favorite, half dimes. After filling holes as fast as I could at the MS64

I hope everyone had a good Christmas, I know I did.

I picked up some new coins and up graded some old ones. Well, my secret auction site came thru for me again, three more MS70 Commems for about the same money as the other four I got before the holidays, plus an 1923 MS65 Peace Dollar as an upgrade for $35 less than any of the other MS65 in my set(1922,24 and 25). In my raw Lincoln cent collection I picked up a 1914d in VG up graded the 1909s and 1924d to Vf's and am now only missing 1909vdb s, 1922 no d, and 1931s. Due to the very good sales I

Twins !!!

almost did a double-take I'm pretty excited at the moment..I just won an ebay auction I had been watching for 10 days. When this coin first appeared I put in a small, cursory bid so that it would be on my Bidding list. It just ended and I won by my exact high bid..by 51 cents above the second place bidder !! It's a nice 1942-S Mercury dime..graded as an MS67, it will make a wonderful addition to my merc short set. I have to admit to being tempted to stray from my original goal. That goal was

I'm Getting Excited...

...No, not that, but my coin submission is in Quality Control. Yes, I'm getting excited. My coin submission is in Quality Control, and my National Bank note I sent at the same time is Scheduled For Grading. :-) I can't wait to see the grades, I'm hoping for my submitted 70, so could we all keep our fingers crossed for me?! I've purchased several 70's but as yet have not received any 70's yet on coins I've sent in. I'll keep you all posted on how everything turns out. The photo today is a

Addicted to AUSSIE silver dollars...

I have been buying these now for over a week. I have already amassed a large number of silver dollars in mint state, hopefully lots of 70. Introductory Journal

What is this all about anyway? This is the first of what I plan as weekly journals relating my thoughts, concerns, experiences and learning as I continue my numismatic journey in 2009. This entry is really just an expanded version of my bio. Enjoy for what it's worth! I've always had an interest in coins and collected the usual coins out of circulation for a few years when I was a youngster. They still sit in their Whitman blue folders and are probably worth exactly face value - but I don

'08 Year in Review and a Look Forward

Met some goals in 2008, failed in others. What will 2009 bring? In 2008 I set a couple of goals. Some were met others weren't. One goal was to buy all of the American Eagles coins for the year for the sets I collect. This goal was met and now that the fractionals will no longer be minted, this is no longer a goal. Another goal was to keep new sets down. I started several new sets. 2 of them being Gold Buffalo sets (which turned out to be a smart move. All of the fractionals are now selling

A Surprise in the Mail Today

I was actually expecting it...but... Greetings!! After a long day back to work today...well, long in that I had to GO to work today..the day after xmas and all...and after much use of the snow blower and shovel, and after wrestling with a bad attitude all day (my own) I was pleased to find my Collectors Society member package in the mail. This absolutely made my day as now I can get those coins in for submission that have been calling out for that for months now. But I am having some

2 Medals To Cross Over?

Hope JoiseyGirl gives me some good news. I think I'm going to have to quit buying some of these medals. I browse through auction lots, and see all kinds of medals that I think are neat. Only problem is, they're always graded by ICG. The Sac concept dollar I want to put in my Wild West Sig set, but I don't know if NGC will cross these over. Actually I want to put both of them in my sig set. I've always liked the Indian Head gold design, just haven't gotten the nerve (or the cash) to buy some hi
