I did go on a bit of a wild goose chase!
Anxiety, it is evil. I thought, after reading jayh749s latest post, that I could find out the grades of my coins sitting in QC by trying to add them to my sets using their invoice (certification) numbers. Alas! It wasn't to be so. Maybe our fellow numismatist has a unique situation, where all his coins are finalized except for the one that was sent for conservation. Hence he could add them to his sets even though they don't show on the online submis
In the spirit of jayh749 and Revenants musings, I have seen my submissions sitting in Quality Control for a couple of weeks in the past, but...
But I still can't help checking my submission status obsessively. My submission has been in QC for only two days, but I somehow think that it will get through faster this time. Also, jayh749 just made me realize that the invoice number could possibly add coins to your sets even while submissions sit in QC. I've gotta try it out.
...plus a grading report.
I hope Stack's doesn't mind that I used the name of their video bidding program. I'm logged into Stack's "The Golden Horn" sale. This is wonderful, as right now I can't afford to attend these sales in person. I would love to go to some of these, but finances are tight in the first place, and what little cash I have left over, I'd rather put to coins. (I guess all of us probably would!)
Anyway, I've bought a Russian order already, and am waiting right now for some ot
US Mint makes another adjustment in its PM prices!
Although the mint has increased its prices on the 1st Spouse coins, prices have been lowered on other items. For example, the last of the 1/10 oz. AGE Proof coins have been lowered from @$162.95 to @135.50. I just cancelled my previous order of a 3 coin lot and replaced it with a 4 coin lot purchase since the price of the addition (1)coin only cost about $54. Also the price of the last of the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set has been decreased fro
Not many collectors are fully aware of how many of the coins in this series were smelted 40+ years ago! If they did know many of these coins would be priceless. Read on for Part 2 of this journal.
Half Crowns(2.5 Shillings) South Africa:
The Half Crown or 2.5 Shillings were minted in three series'. The first from 1923 to 1936 (King George V), the second from 1937 to 1952 (King George V), & the third from 1953 to 1960 (Queen Elizabeth II). The total mintage for the entire series' is state
Maybe these are simple, but hopefully they'll be achievable.
I don't take that much time to journal on a general basis, but perhaps I'm leaving enjoyment on the table by not doing so...
My first goal for 2009 is to enjoy the hobby and above all else, no matter what happens to the economy, have fun with collecting! I've only been a member of Collector's Society for about 7 months and I've enjoyed every bit of it - from submissions and the nail biting tension prior to grades being posted, comp
THE MINT GETS US EVERYTIME!!
I JUST READ A JOURNAL ENTRY ABOUT THE PRICE OF THE FIRST SPOUSE COINS PRICE BEING RAISED.
I RECENTLY WROTE A LETTER TO THE U.S. MINT DIRECTOR ED MOY, TELLING HIM ABOUT HOW WHEN THE PRICE OF GOLD RISES, THEY IMMEDIATELY RAISE THE PRICE OF THE PRODUCTS THEY OFFER, BUT WHEN THE PRICE DROPS(AS IT HAS TODAY-DOWN $23.00) THEY DON'T RESPOND AS QUICKLY. I STATED TO HIM HOW I FELT THEY ARE STEALING FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS. WELL ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, THEY LOWERED THE P

First Spouse join the list of products ?
Anyone know what happened ? all first spouse coins are now not available ! ouch ! Someone has let me know, they have been repriced up about $50. Thanks ! well the prices at some dealers are really great. Have a look around if you want one.. I am getting the two 70's I need.
Upon realization of the size of my hoard, and economics...
Greetings!
Last night after much thought and upon staring at my coin hoard (again) and also upon hearing that the "W"'s will most likely not be minted this year...and when you go to the Mint website and try to look at SAE Proofs...well, there are none...yet.
Upon considering all of these factors and realizing the coin production this year is likely going to be skimpy I have decided to concentrate most of my budget on submissions
Some thoughts
It's good to know people are reading this journal, even when they disagree with something I write. Numismatics can be a very opinionated hobby - especially when there are such things as registry sets. Personally, I think that is good. Opinions, expressed in a civil tone, are the way we all learn and grow in this hobby.
This past week has been numismatically challenging for me, but it's only the beginning of what will be a very interesting year in many ways. A Capped Bust ha
There is a first time for everything.
This is the first time that I have set any yearly goals when it comes to my coin collection. I normally try to buy every coin that I thank is a good deal without taken into consideration whither it fits with that I am trying to achieve. Most if the time I am disappointed with what I purchased and end up selling it for a loss.
This year I will set some meager goals that I feel can be achieved without to much difficulty.
Goals;
1) Upgrade at least one
Upgraded a couple coins.
Happy New Year to everybody out there! I hope everybody had a good holiday season. This is my first entry for the new year and I made my first purchases of the year and my first in about 3 months.
I was updating my coin inventory last week and noticed that the modern commemorative values for most of my coins dropped a bit across the board. So I decided to do a bit looking about and see if I could upgrade a few of my coins and I found 2 goods deals. I purchased a 200
I have enjoyed the NGC Collectors Society web site since I first browsed it in mid-2008.
The journals that people have posted here have given me insight about how others go about collecting coins so that I might better develop a better strategy for myself. My coin purchases in the past were mainly limited to the two local coin shops and the semi-annual coin shows. This, of course, had the effect of restricting the range of coins available for me to purchase. I have since moved to northern V
One 2009 Goal was Completed in 2008.
As we were heading into the last few months of 2008, I started thinking about my coin collecting goals for 2009.
One 2009 goal I wanted to accomplish was to complete my Morgan Silver Dollar GSA set in Deep Mirror Proof-Like condition. I had been working on it for about four years, with just one coin left. The remaining coin was the 1880-CC Reverse of 78. There are only 10 graded in DPL, so they don't surface for sale very often. I had been looking for
... Now where was up again? ... *Boom*
I feel like I hit December and my rudder broke. I've been feeling lost for where to go next with my collection. This may sound odd coming from someone with 45 sets in his registry, many of which aren't complete. Well, not really...
17 sets are part of the "Wright Family Collection." While I'm very active in helping to build those sets, how far they go and how fast is my step-father's call, not mine. The other 28 are mine and generally fall into one of t

Greetings collectors,
I feel like a complete insufficiently_thoughtful_person as today was the first chance I got to look at all winners for 2008. At the time of my post yesterday I saw the 2008 winner icon beside revenant and neverman and mentioned them in the post. I did think for just a moment that I was leaving out the other journal winner but I being in a hurry and too lazy to stop and look and then come back to the post figured a "blanket co
should be an interesting year
I always enjoy setting my yearly goals and writing them into a journal entry. It is especially interesting to look back in November and December and see how many I have attained and how my goals may have changed or morphed.
So here they are, in no particular order of importance:
1. For 2 years I have made it a goal to finish my Walker Short Set--hopefully this year I'll find that 1941-S in MS66 with a nice strike at a time when I also have the discretionary
How many times have I clicked on "order status"?
Greetings!
I have now gone from the sheer adrenaline rush of choosing and packing my selected coins for submittal to the agonizing period of hoping and waiting for my coins to be graded.
It's a delicate time when a collector submits his coins to NGC.
Laughter fades to quick temper. The pacing begins. The spouses never really understand.
Then there are the prayers to (name your dieties) that the coins will be safe on their travels, a
The more that I grow in the hobby the more it matures me.
Over the past couple of years this subject pops up every now and then. Each time I read some articles, I sense anger, frustration, loyalty, pride, and the list of emotions goes on. I understand all of these, as I feel them more and less at times. I do, though, fall into the catigory of using PCGS to my advantage. I have a few, about 20% of my coins registered, by PCGS. They are usually the rare, top graded coins that I can't aquire in N
Open and Closed Set Types
From my last journal entry, more agree with me and a few diehard PCGS collectors do not. They do not believe they should give up there ranking now. I take great pride when I select coins to send them in for grading to NGC. I do not send in bulk like most dealers who do not care about the coins' appearance just the grade. When I purchase coins for my registry, I look for only NGC coins first after all, this is a NGC Collectors Society. How would you feel if you j
King of Eagles Congratulates all NGC Registry Award Winners !!!
I am grateful and humbled by those that are inspired to share their life and collections on this terrific site. Accomplishing a goal and being proud to share it with others is what makes the hobby of Numismatics the best hobby in the world. Thank you for the award recognition NGC and staff (Amy) for your service to all the collectors who are a part of this registry. May the New Year bring you all the numismatic joy and happiness a
Hopefully All The Hard Work Has Paid Off
Here we are, another year gone by. I had the day off today, and sat waiting for the winners to be announced. Boy, they took their time. Finally, there it was. I have to admit that I had known that I had a good chance for a couple of awards, but it hadn't been finalized yet. Now it is official. I wonder though, how in the world does a person win those awards for best world set, etc. I spent alot of time compiling info on the coins, mintages and all. May
