It's 2009 And I Have A Goal

...Full Set of Full Bell Lines Congratulations to all of the award winners!!!! I truly feel the sets and journal articles have increased so much in quality, even since I've started my membership a few years ago. I especially enjoy the journal articles, and I look forward to another year of reading all the entries. Actually, I guess my title is wrong. I really have 2 goals for 2009. First and foremost, I would like to complete my Full Bell Line Franklin set. It may be hard, as I have to have

WHAT AN HONOR!!!

I DID IT AGAIN! WELL I AM STILL IN THE NUMBER ONE RANKED POSITION IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PROOF DOLLARS. THIS IS A PERSONAL FEAT FOR ME. THE PROOF PRESIDENTS IS THE FIRST SET TO BEGIN THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR, AND ABLE TO AQUIRE TO ULTIMATE IN GRADES, PF70UC. I AM HAPPY TO HAVE RECEIVED THE AWARD FOR #1 FOR 2007 AND 2008, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO THROUGH THE REST OF THE PROGRAM. I DON'T MAKE MUCH MONEY AS I AM DISABLED AND TO BE ABLE TO GET THESE AND HAVE THEM GRADED B

Looking back on 2008 & forward into 2009...

"Still hanging, addicted as ever but somewhat humbled" Greetings fellow collectors. I have been absent from the journal arena for some time but have tried to keep up with the "goings on" by reading all the inspiring and educational posts by the rest of you. First of all, congratulations to all the registry award winners as they did not win them without earning them. I am so thankful to be in the collective collecting community of this forum. Each and every one of you has taught me so much and

Congratulations! Award Winners.

It is that time of the year, where all our collecting hopes and dreams, sweat and blood, obsessions and resultant penury, get rewarded with recognition. What an honor it is, to be recognized by NGC for one's collection or for one's entertaining and educational journals. These registry sets are a boon to coin enthusiasts and have brought a new level of excitement to this hobby. Thanks to PCGS for the innovative creation of registry sets and thanks to NGC for taking it one notch further, by be

WOW!! What an HONOR!!

I am completely humbled Greetings!! I was quite surprised and utterly shocked when I logged on to my Collectors Society page to see that I have been awarded one of 3 Best Journal Awards again this year. This is a huge honor for me, and one of my proudest moments. Also, one of the most humbling experiences as well...that all of you would put up with me for the past 2 years!! I do appreciate the honor and those of you who read my journal, it does mean a lot to me, and I hope tha

And the upgrades continue

Replacing an MS-65 1897 Morgan with an MS-67... Although I only have about 57% of the Morgan dollar set, I have been focused for the past year or so on improving the quality of each example I have. When I started collecting Morgans, I looked for good quality specimens that were affordable and bought as many as I could. Then I realized that I would go back and look at better examples of the same mintage and wish I had them. Now, I purchase far fewer coins, but of much higher quality. Now,

Thanks?

? It?s an honor. Truth be told, I was shocked for a moment when I refreshed my page and saw a new little icon sitting next to my name. I think we all hope that we might receive such recognition but I personally didn?t think I?d get it. There are so many other journal authors that write frequently with a passion and a conviction that I can only admire. It adds a certain force to their writing that?s hard to miss. I?ve been kinda lost the last couple of weeks as far as ?where do I go from here

Conflicting information from US Mint.. my fingers are now crossed...

I had a 1/4 oz gold proof on hold in stock and reserved.. I get an email which says SOLDOUT We regret to inform you that the item(s) listed below are currently sold out. A customer service representative will be happy to assist you in finding an alternative item. But if I track the order number it says SHIPPED, but no tracking information and I haven't been billed. Must be a mistake, surely? I'll check my card again soon! Wondering whether it is worth it to buy another two 1/10th oz.

My most recent purchase

A quick note Unfortunately do to down sizing at the plant I'll have to put my coin collecting on the back burner. For now I am trying my hardest to hold onto what I have. This year (2008) I built my first #1 Registry Set 1957 Toners and upgraded my IHC's and Error Collections. Also a #1 Proof Pres along with 500 others and added quite a few nice Cameos to my 65,66,and 67 SMS Sets. Overall it's been a great year. So for now I will be admiring what I have and trying not to covet what I don't.

Two New Gems

I can't seem to save money. Regarding my previous (first) journal: It's been five years since I started collecting again. You'd think that with a Ph.D. in astronomy I'd be able to count to five correctly the first time... For months I've had in mind to save money for one of the up-coming pre-Long Beach auctions. But I keep spending anyway. Yesterday I upgraded one of my late date large cents to a 67BN, and today I added a very nice MS66 seated half dime, both from the Heritage auction in

Something has got to change!!

PCGS SMS and First Day Issues most will not Crossover! The registry really should be for NGC graded coins alone. PCGS has their own registry and those coins should not be allowed in here. I have several Satin Finish Presidential dollars MS69 that I know will not crossover. If you can visibly see stains or marks with the naked eye, everyone knows that they would never be a MS69 SMS with NGC. There should be an allowance for those collectors that only want NGC in their registries. I chall

YESSS!!!

2008 was a great year for me. I have only been a paying member for a little over 2 months. I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have been asked why I do so many Sacagawea sets? Why don't you do some other types of sets? Now I can answer both questions definitively. I never knew about the competition amongst members in the Registry. I do, however, love to compete. I also like to win.....sometimes. I tried to accomplish my goal of having one of the best sets available anywhere. I h

The Sterling Series Of South Africa 1923 -1950 "Gigantic Sleeper"

Not many collectors are fully aware of how many of the coins in this series were smelted 40+ years ago! If they did know many of these coins would be priceless. Read on for the facts. Looking at the mintage figures for any denomination & year in this series it does not seem like there are any exceedingly rare items save for the obvious ones such as the 1931 silver denominations but looks can be very deceiving, none more so than in this particular instance. To understand why this is so on

New Registry Set Added Today - I am Number One

I am also the only one...for now. NGC added a new registry set category today - Morgan Dollars in GSA Soft Packs. It has been a long time coming, but the wait was worth it. I was the first collector to add a coin to the new registry set...but will certainly not be the last. There are many collectors of these coins, many with much more substantial collections than mine, and I hope that all of them add their sets to the registry. I am really looking forward to it.

Civil War Copper

Then and Now. It's a mild understatement to say that the Civil War was a rough time for the country. Grover already provided the "the Civil War was about money" post and I don't really want to get into that. Let's leave the discussion at the fact that, during the war, silver, gold, and eventually the copper-nickel cents were removed from circulation. Say what you want about cents, nickels and dimes now, but back then these coins were essential to commerce and their removal was potentially crip

It's a New Year!

And the drive to have it all.. I've finally decided to add a journal entry after 3 years. I have always loved collecting coins since I was young. 30 years ago it was loose change. I had to have one of everything and I remember it use to drive my parents nuts. A few years ago I started to collect certified coins. Soon after I became aware of this collectors site. I started to list all my coins and realized I had to have one of everything. Being 30 years later, now I drive my wife nuts. I've rea

FINALLY......MY MODERN COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLARS ARE COMPLETE !!!

A 1982-D WASHINGTON 50C, MINT STATE 69? Wooooohooooo Yes......finally found a #1 coin. I completed listing my Modern Commemorative half dollars today, and gained over 100 points. I was hoping to make it closer to 500. I am still proud of where I am with such a meager collection in comparison to some. This set now is mostly PCGS, but a few NGC slabs made it. According to population reports from PCGS, I now have 4 top coins. Lucky me! When I find a way to get a good photo of these bluish

Don't destroy me, Paul.......but

You can only tie mine.....so far I haven't been here long, but I brought the competetive mood I've always had. I wanted a good set of Sacagaweas, but I got the bug. Yes, I now have the best Sac set in the Registry....bar none! All 10 coins from NGC in PF 70 Ultra Cameo. It's unfortunate I had to make a "Signature" set to make room for them. I also have the most 10 coin sets registered also. I was very fortunate to amass these. I would welcome other collectors to share the top spot. It only t

THE VERDICT IS IN!

The jury has made it's decision. First, I'd like to thank the members who were nice enough to serve as jurors in my trial over the toning Eagle chicks. After all the evidence was presented and documented, I have decided to pass down sentence upon these wonderful slabbed coins. They are destined to serve the rest of their time in my collection. They will, however, lose their place in the Registry. I have acquired another pair to replace them, but only to maintain the pristine look of the

Upgrades and gap filling. Ever since I started getting the 2008 business strike presidential dollars I've been trying to deal with a bit of an inbalance. The 2008 coins were all MS66FD, the 2007 coins were almost all MS65FD. This was partially because in the first part of 2007 the MS66FDs were getting pretty steep prices and I didn't want to pay that much. In 2008 though the MS66FD prices came down rather sharply, even for the 2007 coins. So in addition to adding the 2008 coins I've been slowl

Firing off round #2

The second submission I've packed up the second submission. 2 invoices. 1 is just there to correct some mislabeled slabs. The 2nd is an 18 coin submission. 4 coins are from a 1982 souvenier set, a nickel, dime, quarter, and half. I don't really expect all of them to grade remarkably well but my step-father and I are looking for some stuff to put into our 1982 set. That set continues to limp along when most of the others are nearly complete or complete. The other 14 coins are a bunch of SBAs.
