I picked my set to work on this year

EPcoins helped me get started Well, I finally picked a set to work on for the year. The Canadian 1953-76 PL cents. I bought about 90% of epcoins's set. I would have liked to buy it all, but one was too low of a grade, for me. The other was way too competitive with all the ebay bidders for that coin. Anyhow, it gave me a nice boost on the set, and a second place sitting. again, That "lantern Collection" is in first place. His points seem to be quite the challenge to try to catch, let alone beat

I NEED SOME ADVICE TOO!

Is this worth it? Hello everyone. I came across this older coin and wondering if it is worth grading? It appears to be mostly silver. It is German, a 1938 2 mark coin. It appears to be in great condition, and is edge incused also. The reverse displays a swastika, which, I assume, means it was during the Nazi era. Hindenburg was known throughout the world. I liked the strike and design. It is not clean, but decent. Is it a candidate for NCS? As apart of history, I want to save it, and e

Disappointed.. no more Gilt Kookaburras !

2009 Gilt Kooka was a no show today At the Perth ANDA coin show. Perth Mint told me the series is over! I am very disappointed, but there you go KEY DATE is 2008, only 3000 minted vs 10,000 for each of the earlier dates. I was tempted to buy some more today.. But why bother:

and other news and teasers of what's to come. I find that I tend to get sidetracked rather easily. My registry is somewhat representative of this; 46 sets. I started a few projects mostly just for fun. Then I left them standing when I couldn't support every set and I moved back to one of my core projects. My Chinese Panda set has been a really acute example of this. About 10 months ago I bought the 2008 Panda and made a registry set for it. I was just starting to think about building my signat

My Updated Signature Sets!

I collect many unusual coins. I think NGC should add a loosely defined Interesting category of Whatever the user wants! NGC does! You can create your own Odd sets by creating Signature Sets. They are a lot more work than a Standard set!I do hope NGC keeps expanding there standard sets!NGC Signature sets have improved! If your old signature set complains of errors, you should:1. Print out your old signature set.2. Create a NEW signature set with a different title!3. Put each old coin into the

MY FIRST JOURNAL ENTRY

Please be gentle, it's my first time... I suppose I should introduce myself. I started out as the reluctant collector by way of my father. He died a couple of years ago and left me a number of coins. He had tried for years to get me or my brother interested in coin collecting with little luck. My brother is a minister who does not have the resources to collect, but has always been interested in coin collecting. I on the other hand had the resources but not the desire to collect. My fathe

I Saw a Great Hoard the Other Day

My supervisor brought his raw collection in... Greetings!! It has occured to me lately that I really just love to be around coins...hell, I even just love to watch coins on TV. I got into a discussion with my supervisor at work a few days ago about coins and collecting when he stated he had a lot of older coins at home. "You know, Morgans, old nickels..." he said. So, I told him I'd have to show him what a great job NGC does in preserving the coins I have, and I brought a few of my c

Re: Point Re-Evaluation

Re: Point Re-Evaluation Re-evaluation of the Walker series was way past due. Can't say much about the Franklins since I haven't followed them very closely, but I agree with Walt that the Roosevelt dimes are terribly inflated. Look at the 1947 through 1963 Mint sets; 17 total years, and 8 of the #1 sets (and many #2, #3, and #4 sets) contain NOTHING BUT Roosevelt dimes. These "#1 Mint sets" are at most 28% complete but still have the "Best in Category" awards. The point values for the best L

HO HUMMMM!

What a day for a daydream! Hello all! It's late, and it was an uneventful day. I got my old scanner/printer to scan to a disc. I finally put images for my Prezzies sets(2). My new scanner isn't here yet (UPS). I got a new PF 70, 2000 Sac, for my last 10 coin Sac set. This is the one with the"First Year Of Issue" pedigree that doesn't get a slot! The 2009 "Native American" dollar fits in though? I stole the scan from the seller. WOW! My greatest image so far. Everything at NGC is in qu

Collecting What I want, NOT NGC!

I collect for Fun & long term investment. My hope is others will agree with me many years Later when I sell my coins! Ngc ratings make very little sense to me! I am glad NGC ignores Cameos/ Pl. In a FEW cases NGC DISCOUNTS the RARER SUPERIOR PL compared to the REGULAR COIN! (Ex: See State Quarters) I collect RARE coins with FLASH! 1. My BEST example is my 1864 Bronze Indian cent pr64RB ULTRA CAMEO! Only 2 1864 Ulta Cameo Bronze Indians EXIST! NGC thinks my MORE COMMON pr64

Crack outs - my 1/2 cent worth...

Should we or shouldn't we? That is the question... I really don't have a formed opinion on the subject, but I do remember reading the story of an Ebay seller recently on a listing. The listing was for an early date, branch mint Lincoln cent in high grade RD. The seller purportedly cracked this coin out of a PCGS slab (I think a 64 or 65 RD) and sent it to NGC for grading. It was returned body bagged with questionable color...The seller then sent it back to PCGS and it was again body bagged w

Crossover or crack out a coin to send in?

You should always crack out a coin when you send it in to a new grading company.... and more. I am not a dealer, but a collector. So take my comments and experiences here with a grain of salt. They may not apply to you or in your area. While attending various coin shows in my area, I have heard many dealers talk about this practice of cracking out a coin and sending it in to another company. Once in a while some dealers would talk and not think I was listening or cared about them talking sho

American Arts Commemorative Series of Gold Medalions

I need help - Really I'm not beyond help as some people think. I have tried for some time now to dig up information on the American Arts Commemorative Series of Gold Medalions produced by the US mint between 1980 and 1984. These medalions were issued in 1 ounce and 1/2 ounce gold to honor selected well known persons in our history. As far as I know these were the only years they were sold. I have all of these except for the 2 issued in 1982 to honor Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Armstrong.

ADVICE ON CROSSING OVER?

Oh please send mine in? Hello everyone! I read the previous journal, and almost fell off my chair. Anyone that sends in a set of PF70s and they cross to PF 70s, please send a set of my Sacs to PCGS. If I were so lucky to get all 10 perfectly crossed, I could buy a UHR and keep in in my pocket. I guess I'm happy with what I have. I am lousy with advice anyway. Happy collecting.

Any advice on crossing over/cracking out?

I have a feeling some of the coins i have in PCGS slabs would end up in a higher grade NGC slab.....should i crack out or send in for cross over? First off, previously everytime i had a PCGS slabbed coin that i wanted in an NGC slab i would just send in for cross over.....i have found though that whenever i have done this they have never gone up a grade....or down a grade....they just always cross at the same grade.......do the graders at NGC see that PCGS graded a coin ms64 so they just do th
