2009 Lincoln Cents...

Not a huge fan but wanted the "new design" Greetings Collectors, Wanted to say first off that it is good to see "Bully" is back. Have missed his very informative and colorful journals. On the new Lincoln cent reverse design while not a big fan of the cent since the last change I have made a habit of trying to obtain any and all new issues that can be had for "face value" at my local bank. The girls always let me know the day the new quarters, dollars, nickles and such come out and I alwa

Prezzies Galore!!!

You know...I truly love these coins. Greetings! I am acquiring more and more prezzies lately as these coins are seemingly getting more circulated. I really love these coins. I think there are 2 reasons why I do love them so much. First, they tend to remind us of the past presidents that we as a modern society may have forgotten about. There is a history lesson in each coin if we all want to take time to research the era of the past presidents. The coins seem to make the faceless hi

"Submitted 5 & Got 5 "70's"

Five for Five,A First & probaly will never see again! Greetings Collectors, I submitted five gold 2008-W coins to NGC and once again, a superb job by all there. They received the coins late afternoon on March 5th and they arrived here to me in todays mail. Once again I held back on looking at the results 'til they got here and boy was I pleasantly surprized. I was able to finish out the 1/10th oz.in mint state, so now I can concentrate on getting the dates prior to 1998.

A few more Lincolns

Top Pops and not. For those of you that keep up with the Lincolns, you may have already noticed that a couple of my sets have moved up. My Memorial set has recently climbed a spot to No. 13. I'm drawing closer to my goal of a Top 10 set with a minimum of 8000 points (I'm really shooting for 10000 pts). I've added some very decent coins to the set in the last 2 weeks. Some of them have not arrived yet so no pictures for those as of this writing, but let me assure you they are mint red. Th

The evolution of Continental Currency....

The Continental Congress created a de-facto monetary standard based on Silver, rather than Gold (the Spanish 8-Reale Dollar remained as Legal Tender in the USA until 1857). Benjamin Franklin, following the war, was to describe the Continental Currency as actually nothing more than a form of taxation, used to clothe and feed the army of revolutionaries.   Due at least in part to the devastation of the Continental Currency (the source of the phrase, ?Not worth a Continental?), it was later decid

Is anyone getting the new 2009 Lincoln Cent

OR can anyone even FIND IT? WHERE IS MR. LINCOLN? I am just starting to see some of these coins appear with a few stray dealers, banks don't have rolls, U.S. Mint orders are BACKORDERED along with orders Proof and Mint State Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollars (and have been for months!). Yet I've seen some dealers selling lots of multiple certified coins. Am I the only one having trouble finding these Lincoln cents (or dollars for that matter)? Also, is it me, or are the grades and

I Way Overpaid For This Coin!!

But You Know What - I DON'T CARE!! Here we are in the middle of the worst recession in my lifetime, and I bought this coin for moon money. Why? Why not! I didn't invest it with Madoff in his ponzi scheme - I would have lost it all if I had. I didn't invest it with the crooks on Wall Street - I would have lost 50% if I had. So I am feeling pretty good, even if I did overpay for it. This coin is rare in the GSA Soft Pack, with only two graded. This one at AU58 and one at AU53. How much

Last but not least - 1838 1838 was a date I'd been wanting to upgrade for awhile. I had bought an MS64BN in Heritage's auction during the 2004 Pittsburgh ANA show. It's a nice coin overall, but a couple wisps of lighter toning, probably remnants of a fingerprint, appear on the portrait and are a little distracting. After getting the subjects of my previous five journals, I still had enough money for one more coin of similar quality. I'm happy with my 1839 N-3 Head of 38 (part of the "middle

My response to BULLY........and others

Here's my 2 cents worth. Hello all! All these coins and not enough boxes! Let's see......six new quarters for 2009. Do we really need any more? They get their own category. All 12. Then in 2010 we get more? Oh yeah........the national parks. Sacagawea.....you want some? Any vending machine in the Post Office will have them. Put in a $5 and you'll get them in change. Oh, how they tarnish so quickly. The business strikes are so bad, you'll never make a set of MS 69s. Then NGC adds t

U.S. Territorial Quarters - 2009

Part of State Quarter Series, or it's own thing? To be, or not to be, that is the question Ok, some of you have contacted me recently, and asked about me since I had not posted anything in a while. Tonight, you can see that I am on a bit of a roll. Ok, I am wired, and a bit hyper. It was just that kind of night. So, I focused a little on my coins -- trying to plan some to purchase this weekend to fill some gaps in my Registry Sets, and also thought I would share some ideas that were raci

2009 Native American Sacagawea Dollars

Are these the forgotten coin, or is it just me? I am on the lookout for these, am hunting these down, to no avail. I ordered a few rolls from the Mint- months ago -- and am STILL WAITING. Has anyone gotten these coins? Has anyone gotten them graded? What's your general opinion of the reverse re-design? SIDE NOTE: Does anyone else have problems with LONG DELAYS for U.S. Mint Orders these days, even when the order is supposedly upgraded to "Expedited Shipping?" That said, I had

My Ultra High Relief Double Eagle HeartBreak

Yes, my 2009 UHR FINALLY came in the mail this week, on Tuesday in fact -- not that two months from order time is something about which one should be impressed. First of all, is ANYONE hating the U.S. Mint on the following: 1. VERY SLOW order fulfillment? 2. Their new SEVEN DAY return policy? Now, I can sort of understand this and possibly even accept this for Gold and Platinum BULLION items, because of the significant price variations. However, for Legacy Sets? For Coin Rolls? For

Accessorizing with 1837 I really love my NGC MS65BN 1837 N-9 cent. I paid a lot for it at the time (four years ago), and I'm still glad I did. Within my collection, only my 1820 N-13 competes with its beauty. But I upgraded the date to an MS66RB in the Naftzger sale anyway. In my auction planning, I had three 1837 cents in mind out of 43 available for the date. The first of the four was a really nice N-7/8 in MS67BN. Of course, it sold for more than my preset max, and more than I had left

1899 Morgan Dollar

I thought lower mintage meant higher value. Does anyone else find it odd, that the 1899 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is the 6th lowest minted dollar in the entire Morgan series at 330,846 coins and is not valued the way some of the other rare coins are. The only Morgan dollars that were minted in lower numbers are the 1881-CC (296,000), 1885-CC (238,000), 1893-O (300,000), 1893-S (100,000) and the 1894-P (110,972). It seems to me, that this coin is way under valued and appreciated. I mean, th

What funny little birds...

Collecting the New Zealand Kiwi Bullion Series Well, a few people messaged me and accurately identified the bird pictured in my last post as a Kiwi. It's kind of a funny looking bird isn't it? A wingless, nocturnal, grub eating bird that lives in the brush. They're proof that there needs to be predators in this world. A few thousand years without a legitimate threat and nature creates something adorable but completely defenseless... which is a big part of why they're going extinct. Some had th

Pulled the Trigger

actually I "clicked the mouse" Some of my favorite journal entries are those of my fellow collectors that let me into their heads a bit. I really enjoy LowBudget's journals because I get to see how a fellow collector like him methodically hunts his "prey". An in depth education and knowledge comes first, followed by many hours studying coins on-line, at auction in hand, auction histories..varieties..it is just fun to see how others collect. However there are a myriad of "right" ways t

Spring Break is coming!

And this terrible week is getting close to being over. Well guys, I took my "Kinetics and Reactor Design" mid-term this morning... all I can say is "Yuck." Maybe everyone else failed and it won't be so bad... At this point I just have to study all day tomorrow survive my test in "Mass Transfer Operations." It's times like this when I get awfully tempted to buy a coin or two that I want just to feel better about the beating that my GPA is about to take... Friday is payday though... so you never

Amidst My Own Uncertainty I Relish My Collection

It's nice to have tangible accomplishments Greetings! I know that things will get better. But, I have my days when I feel like I am making an unfair wage, and the bills come in, and the decisions I have to make at the grocery store are not the decisions I am used to making ( can I really have MEAT this week?). Sometimes I feel like I work too hard to make even less, and I feel like I am getting nowhere fast. THEN there are the times when I make my coin collecting goals, and che

ANCIENT COIN GRADES

I GOT A STAR! I just looked at the finalized grades on four ancient coins I sent into NGC for grading. I got a MS60* on one! A star on an ancient coin was unexpected to say the least. Can't wait to see the tag on the slab. I have been seeking the very best examples I can afford, but never expected a star. I guess I am getting better at grading ancient coins. I got two XF45's and one XF40 on the others in this submission. I have what is a Fluir de Coin, at least, to send in next along wit

These Economic Times - What should a coin collector do next?

Prediction: The mortgage collapse/gold spike is ending soon The deep recession we're in was caused by a lack of oversight that enabled certain parties to make quick money by selling mortgages to average people that couldn't afford them. The financing rules were structured in such a way as to bypass known patterns that would prevent under qualified borrowers from getting a mortgage that was far outside their means. And to make it worse, these bogus securities were packaged up and passed alon
