Naftzger, 2 of 6

One of the finest 1833 N-2 cents My continuing notes from the Goldberg's sale of the Naftzger middle date large cents... Having settled in to the bidding, and 'winning' an 1831 cent, my next target was a nice 1832 to upgrade my MS63. There were five candidates, two of which I expected to go for 5 figures (they did), preceded by three I might be able to get. For some unknown reason, I stopped bidding on the first, an MS66BN (this, and almost all of the Naftzger cents are in PCGS slabs), at a

PAYBACK from the US Mint ? !! :o

I just got presidential proof sets These coins are AWESOME !! virtually no flaws on many of the 40 coins !! I think there will be many 70 sets in there, much better than the sets I received in previous years, which will require a lot of breaking up to get 70 sets. Frost looks knitted, so strong and crisp even at 10x The FIRST box I opened.. MINT ERROR ! John Tyler has a huge orange streak across his face ! looks darker than here but you can see what I mean.. Lamination error ? or just

RE: Be careful, you may not have to sign for your UHR when it arrives

I'm Sorry to hear about that, I've had this happen before, but not with UPS. Many Times its ALWAYS fedex or some USPS. Mine arrived today like I wrote a journal about, But I didn't have this problem when He handed me mine I had to sign for it in return.... But I've found certain areas are different and many times the carrier will sign for the box and state simply that there was nobody present at the time of the delivery( Seeing that the mint doesn't Require that they cannot leave the package w

My UHR came today

The Mint is about 25 days late Just got home from work the find my Thousand Dollar + UHR coin sitting out in the cold and on my porch. I dont feel real good about this. I lock up my coins and now the mint just places these high dollar coin out for anyone to take. I Like the over the top box and OGP that come with this coin. Nothing like a $50 dollar box. I store my coins in a safe and the box is just too big to go inside

Be careful, you may not have to sign for your UHR when it arrives

The only fly in the ointment to an enjoyable day when my UHR arrived. Yesterday evening I received an email from the mint stating that my UHR is on the way. Typically, I receive my items the day after notification. As fate would have it, I worked the graveyard shift last night, assuring I would be home to sign for my delivery. Returning home, I slept on the couch to make sure I would hear the doorbell. Early this morning I heard a heavy truck approach my house and the UPS man (brown really did

"Half Dollars Rule"

Started yet another set... Greetings everyone, I forgot to mention in my latest post that I picked up an additional coin on Teletrades Monday pm auction. (I really like those guys at Teletrade.) Anyway it is a "Capped Bust Half". I actually had purchased another one a year and a half ago but it's in an Anacs holder so it can't be entered here. I really love the look of those old silver coins. The one I have had for a while is an 1820 over 19 in 10 condition. I forget the Overton (sp?) de

"Lots of Extra Points for my Walkers and Franklins"

"Blew thru 100-K & on my way to 150! Greetings Collectors, The new point totals for the two best half dollars of the 20th century (in my opinion) has given me quite a shot in my point totals and has re-newed my interest in my halves. I have picked up a couple of "Walkers" during the month of Feb. The one that really has me excited is my new 1942 MS-66 PCGS. It is a beautiful "blast white" 66 1/2 CAC. I am not much on third party graders being graded again by others but oh well, it wa

ONE MORE TO GO TO COMPLETE SET!!!!!

1829 Classic Head Half Cent Well I bought this 1829 Half Cent raw and sent it in to NGC for grading. It came back a MS62BN. I only have one more coin to complete my Classic Head Half Cent Set (1809-1835). That being an 1809 C-3 or C-6. It's taken awhile to complete but I have enjoyed the journey. I completed a business strike Indian Head Cent Set about 5 years ago and sold it. I plan on keeping this one for a long time.

Thank you namvette68!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The last word I received from the mint is that the new mailing date for my UHR was going to be 4/26/09 SO imagine my surprise when I went to the post office this morning and there the Beauty was. I examined it real closely, showed it to my wife and her remarks were "Now how much did WE pay for that?"I let it fly, packaged it up and sent it off th NGC for grading and fingers crossed for the top MS70 grade. It might even make it in time for the early rel

HINDENBURG CRASHES IN NEW YORK!

Oh the amenities! Hello everyone! It is with mixed emotions that I bring you this news. My Hindenburg has crashed. Yup..... Not one (1) member thought it was a good idea to get it graded. That really let the hot air out of my balloon. yuk yuk Another learning experience. I do have to thank everyone that contributed to it's demise, but I can use the funds to do something more worthwhile. Another Sacagawea perhaps? NGC quality control must be swamped. After all, I did send in my

New Coins in February

Here is what I added to my collection. I was able to add a few coins to my collection last month. 1993P SAE PF69UC 2002 W West Point Silver $1 Commemorative PF70UC 2006 S San Francisco Old Mint Silver $1 Commemorative PF70UC The Silver Eagle was the first proof that I added in awhile. I only need 4 more to finish that collection but I won't be able to complete those SAEs. The 1995 W is way out of my price range! I upgraded my PF69UC with the 2 commemoratives and it gives me 70's from

THE LAST LADY LIBERTY

A symbol of freedom and hardship... A great era of US coinage was concluded with the stop of production of the Mercury Dime. Since the late 1790s American sculptors and artist have adorned the faces of US coinage with the likeness of Lady Liberty. The 1945 Mercury dime and the 1947 Walking Liberty half dollar were the last pieces of circulating coinage to remind the public of the beauty of freedom. United States coinage has portrayed Liberty in many stages of life, in many types of head wea

Parallels Between Life and Coin Collecting

As there are lessons to be learned in life, there are also lessons to be learned in coin collecting! Over my years of coin collecting, I have made many mistakes. Most often, my mistakes have cost me money. The positive aspects of these mistakes are the lessons learned that have made me a better coin collector (I wish I knew what it takes to call myself a numismatist). For instance, at one time I used to buy raw gold coins from e-bay listings. Two of my purchases ended up as counterfeits. Sinc

A Nice Tax Refund This Year!

I have already started spending it too! I am a lucky person right now. I get a healthy tax refund AND my yearly bonus (for 2008) will find its way into my checking account this week. So I purchased an 1899 PCGS MS64 Barber Quarter that has been added to my 1899 Mint Set. 12,624,000 of them were minted and this one looks very white and bright. Garners 1483 points in the Registry. Photos as soon as I have the coin in-hand! Now the rest of my coin purchases from this money will be gold (unles

Release the emergency brake

I can tell that nothing has moved the last week of march, maybe the emergency brake is on. Delivered-24 coins for 15 day grade 2-09-09, march -01 still no grades. Mailed 24 more coins 2-20-09 no e-mail from acceptor that it showed up. Filled out job applications and called for work but not one person called me all week. Sent 6K-8K worth of coins to an auction house which decided to move this month so the coins are on a shelf instead of in an auction, yet they haven't set an auction date. So no

THE EYES HAVE IT!!!

Do yours feel any better today? Hi everyone! Gee it's later than I thought. I have made a concerted effort to ease the eye strain of those that choose to check out my collection from time to time. Never once did I intend to distort your vision so my coins looked good. For those of you I have subjected to the less than adequate coin images, there is great news. Naftzger, 1 of 6

The big purchase has arrived. As I lay in bed last Friday morning - sick in bed and taking off from work, a knock at the door woke me. I wasn't expecting the package from Goldberg's until after the weekend, but it occurred to me that it might be here. I rushed downstairs to the door, in pajamas, and without either variety of corrective lenses. Sure enough, it was the mail man with my six now ex-Naftzger middle date large cents. Of course I had seen them, held them, a few weeks before. But no
