2009 Lincoln Commemorative Unc is sold out

MS70 2009 Lincoln Commemorative is looking good !!! Well, the "year of Lincoln" has certainly caught my attention. I just saw tonight on the Coin News website that the mint has sold its allocation for the uncirculated Lincoln Commemorative. Orders can still be placed on a waiting list and will only be filled in the event of cancellations of existing orders. It would follow that this coin should escalate in price on the popular auction sites and far exceed the proof. For those of y

The New Lincoln Cent and a Bonus

Found some rolls at a local bank! Don't give up looking for these coins at your local bank and save yourself quite a bit of money and frustration dealing with the good ole' US Mint. I haven't bought anything from the mint since the now worthless 1982 commemerative half dollar... Last Friday I asked for the new Lincoln Cents and found that my local Bank of America had just ordered several boxes, and they sold me $5 worth. I was lucky enough to have talked to the "coin teller" and she was ve

BEFORE I WAS A COLLECTOR....

"My Apologies, Mr. Lincoln." I recently spoke with an old college roommate. We've not seen or heard from each other for 40 years. It was a great phone call, and since then, I've found myself thinking more and more about the "good ole days". One such memory centers around the discovery of the 1972 DDO Cent. I was in the Air Force at the time, stationed at McGuire AFB, New Jersey. This was prior to my venture into numismatics. I can recall guys in the barracks rushing to the Base bank to b

Very Late Update

The Old Coppers and their colonial cousins With the shoulder injury, which is slowly (I think) getting better, it is still a pain to type like I used to do - that explains somewhat why I didn't post last week. That and there wasn't much to say last week without getting into one of the "verbal" exchanges that erupt on these journals every so often. That being said, I did receive my VG Connecticut copper, my first colonial coin - or rather early American since it was minted after the Revoluti

SAFE/PIPE/INTERCEPT SHIELD?

2 simple ways to protect your coins. Hi everyone! This will probably upset most. Bring a smile to some, and Get a few to actually do something. Method #1) Put all your coins in Intercept Shield boxes. Most people don't know what they are. Even most collectors. Leave the boxes on a bookshelf in you den or living room. No one will even be curious enough to ask. Method #2) Put all your coins in a tube, pipe, or heavy safe. Put them into a small room as a den playroom etc. Replace

Waxing Nostalgic

Weather changes do this to me... Greetings! A rainy afternoon in Salt Lake city as i write this. Something about the cooler weather we get here makes me think about the past a little more than usual...and with the past comes the collections I have had over the years and now miss dearly. I think about the comic books from the 70's my brother owned and I "borrowed". The ads for me were as great as the art or stories...the Johnson Novelty Co. "Xray Specs" and "Sea Monkey's" and the Eve

Re: Safe/Pipe Saga

Another way Hey, Another idea I had many years ago, read on: #1 Make trap door in floor. #2 Put coins in. #3 Put boards back. #4 Put soft dog bed over trap door. #5 Have German Shepherd Sleep on dog bed. #6 Dual purpose, a) Guard b) protect #7 Sleep good at night. This proceedure worked very well for me for many years until the dog died. But very effective at any rate. There's my 2 cents worth! Todd

Re: Safe or Pipe?

There is another alternative... To simply distract thieves and protect my well-worn wheat cents, I lay out my high grade FT slabbed Roosevelts. Even common theives know that they are overvalued and garner excessive registry points, ready to take a big fall at any moment. When a burglar sees these, he quickly retreats, and I don't even have to kill him!

Hoarding vs Collecting

My Kennedy Proof Collection I've come a long way from my days of hoarding. I think this is a testament to our craft.... Taking the time to search out specific pieces as opposed to buying whatever you can afford that comes on the market. I don't think that there are many aspects of our world that can say that. I have reached the 25% mark on my Kennedy Proof collection and it has been a heck of a ride. I hope to have the collection finished by the end of the year and then figure out where

Striking a nerve??

I think thou does protest too much!! I think I have been called condescending and a know-it-all. Guys, do what works for you!! I was merely commenting on what works for me. I did enjoy the one post about posting signs to protect your property. It reminds me of the joke about the farmer. So I will leave you with this: A farmer notices that someone is stealing his tomatoes every night. So the farmer post a sign saying: ?One of these tomatoes has been poisoned, eat at your own risk?.

UHR Arrived Safe from NGC + ER Pop Figures

+ Population figures for 2009 UHR ER as of 03/21/2009, See below My baby is back home. I was getting worried as the package shipped registered mail from NGC on 3/12, 8 days ago!! I had some scary thoughts indeed. Not quite sure why it took so long. No mind now, it's here. I have attached a snap of the reverse. I still need to work on my camera skills. After entering my coin in a new registry set "American Eagles 1986-Date, Mint State", I was able to see the population numbers for the

I tried to be quiet... I really did...

But this is just BEGGING me to say something... All one has to do is try to read and make sense of anything posted in a very recent journal and they will instantly know the person making the post has an inside track of who is stupid. Some smart person a while back, maybe a million years ago or something like that, once said, " A wiseman speaks because he has something to say... a FOOL speaks because he has to say SOMETHING!" OK... color me in the latter, but at least I know it and admit it

RE:Safe or Pipe???

Most people aren't that smart Well I also have a huge collection.A lot of people know I collect coin.Majority of people have no idea what a coins is worth, especially in a case.even if they crack itout, they will think is is a waste of their time.No there is a sign outside of my door "Warning all trespassers will be shot, suvivors will be shot again".In other words, you will not make it out of my house alive. You come to rob me,I will kill you.My wore out 1958 wheat penny is worth me than you are!!

My Worst Numismatic Nightmare

Suffering the consequences of mistakes made years ago. From my journal post on March 1, I described many of the lessons I learned over the years on building a quality coin collection. In that journal, I documented a desire to get my entire collection certified. Foolishly, I sent the bulk of my raw coins to NTC (Numistrust Corp). In the past year since joining Collectors Society, I discovered the joy of building registry sets. With the registry accepting only PCGS or NGC graded coins (NCS accep

RE: Just Wrong

My bad! Troy, I jumped the gun on adding this coin to my set. I?m really sorry about that!!! I guess the guy I bought it from on ebay reuses his pictures. When you released it, the coin and pictures were transfered automatically to my set. I just accepted your request for transfer so it should now be back in your set. By the way I've had this happen to me before but I didn't accept the transfer. Hope there's no hard feelings!

Safe or Pipe???

We all may be living with a false sense of security!! Children can't we all get along. Everyone does what they think is best when it comes to security. I too have a large safe bolted, two dogs, and a security system - not a big deal. I still believe all this security is a false sense of security. Ask yourself one question: If you are caught off guard in your home and some points a 357 at your head and makes a subtle request to open the safe - are you going to say NO? In this case I may wi
