RE: Dishonest Dealers...(and collectors?)

Honesty is the best policy In my experience, I have found people who collect coins to be among the most honest people I have met. It is in part, this sense of honesty and comradely that attracts me to this hobby. I to have made foolish purchases on EBay, I purchased a double eagle and a 3 dollar gold piece that turned up being counterfeit. These two coins would have meant a significant loss to me had those people I purchased them from not been honest and refunded my money. Since then,

Lincoln Pennies

The hold up I work at a bank in Texas. I heard from our main vault that because the FED feels there are too many pennies backed up at the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, we can not special order the Lincoln Log Cabin pennies. "They will be sent out when they are sent out." Wow. They specifically make these coins to commemorate Lincoln's birth and they decide not to allow them to go out..... other than the fact that you can buy them from the mint for 9 times face value! I do not order from the

Bummer on My First NGC Submittal

4 BBs out of 5 coins submitted Well, the verdict is in. The MS64RB 26-S Lincoln came back as a BB, as did one of the $2.5 Indians. The $1 gold and $1 silver Pan-Pacs also came back in BBs. The BBs were marked improperly cleaned. One $2.5 Indian came back as MS61. I will tread very carefully from now on on coins purchased off ebay and in mail bid auctions.

Mint Sold Out

going going gone...in 2 weeks The Mint is now sold out of the 2 roll 2009 lincoln set after only 2 weeks....wow...amazing...glad I ordered two boxes last week. Dishonest Dealers...(and collectors?)

What would you have done? Greetings, About a year or so ago I wrote a few times about "shady dealers" and actually went on a "tear" about them. Going a little far on subjects at times is something I am guilty of. I have, and I am sure most of you that have been in this hobby for a while have had the unpleasant experiance of being taken. Just when I think I have learned enough to stay out of the "serpents lair" wham, I get bit again. Just in the last few months I bought a coup

"Caught a Bug"

This past winter wasn't bad but I did caught a bug. That's the GOLDBUG and PLATINUMBUG! When I look at these coins, I should have made them my MAIN focus.

rank is going up

More new coins Hi, Just added my Pres PF and ASE (both 2009). With these additions I finally made it into the 500 group (592). May not stay here long but it is still nice to see it. Have to wait on my latest submissions before I will move any more. I have another big lot of Lincoln cents to go(they might be worth a lot of points) Not much else going on now, but wait I will be on the move again. Happy collecting to everyone. TPETERS (Todd)

NEW COLLECTOR'S STARTER KIT

What Would You Include? A friend recently announced that she was going to start collecting coins. She stated, "I don't know what I want to collect or how to go about it, but I'll start by going through a big change jar that we have at home." I gave her suggestions about getting coins from the bank to view, and she had heard about the "Red Book", so I told her I would give her one. Later, as I thought more about it, I decided to construct a "starter kit" for her. Here's what I included:

A collectors kit for the times........

Having read the past weeks journals, one might assemble the following items as a starter collectors kit....1 A US Mint Gold Amercian Express Card (100K limit)2 An external backup hard drive for the computer to hold all the backorder notifications from the mint.3 An Elite membership to NGC, the best grading company of all. (The new collector would get 5 free submissions in case the mint ever sent them some coins)4 Some 2 X 2's to ship any raw coins 5 A box of Kleenex for the return

An addition to my "Full Band" Mercury Dime Set...

1ST Generation PCGS "Rattlers" Greetings Everyone, I have had to slow down in Numismatics of late as that "hateful" time of year approaches for those that are in business for themselves. Yes "Tax D-Day" is coming soon and with our new President, I fear it will only get worse. Anyway enough politics. I always have a 70+ table coin show to look forward to the last weekend of May which helps to forget this time of year. As I said I have slowed my coin buying and the only coins I have

Ever buy a coin because it seemd the right thing to do?

That's how I came to buy this one! I don't even have a set to put it in. I was browsing a coin company's web site and came across this 1852-O Quarter Eagle for what I felt a decently low price. It is my 3rd New Orleans minted gold coin. It is graded VF20 and there were 140,000 of them made. It would get 502 Registry points if I had a set for it. I think any New Orleans minted gold coin will command a premium in the future, so, click, I bought it. It came in today.

Can You Believe,Not really!

Question number one! Why does it take so long to grade each coin when they know all 298 are to be given MS 70 first day of issue.Question 2 is what justifies the first day of Issue! This is why NGC is so respected they dont play the these games!

CAN YOU BELIEVE!

Coin Collector on HSN. The Coin Collecter on HSN last night and this past weekend was offering 298 MS-70 of the UHR? He said he didn't have them all because the graders were still grading them? How can he get 298 when alot of people have ordered them and are still waiting? How come the graders are still grading and how is he assured MS-70? Any way I ordered my on the first day and when I received it, took a few minutes and then it was in the mailed to NGC. Didn't get the grade I wanted but

I'm just getting started...

It takes a lot of time to find what you want. I only started taking coins seriously about two months ago but I've had a few quality finds. The real winners are still being graded. I hope to have them in-hand in a few days. One is an 1886-O that I hope will grade well. Being new to this, I hope my expectations aren't too high for this coin. If it grades anything less than an MS-63 I will be disappointed.

Scheduled for grading.. wish me luck on the Kookas

Those wanting the leftovers who have contacted me will be contacted soon, in order I haven't forgotten any of you ! First person who contacted me will be getting first pick, then I move to the second person. My Focusing Really Hurts

But maybe it's for the better in the long run. My focusing efforts really hurt tonight. In previous journal entries, I've written about the need to focus my collection, as I'm low on cash (the major reason) for probably the next couple of years. Also, I"m needing to focus on quality, as I truly love currency, but have to have them (since I"ve been in the printing industy) in top condition. With this in mind, I searched through my Morgan dollars tonight, with the plan to sell lower quality co

DON'T EVER CUSS NGC

Free security is hard to pay for. Hello all....again! My computer crashes, burns, gets stolen with my coins, decides to elope, or other, heres what makes NGC Registry so great. I joined the Registry for one main reason. SAFETY! With safety comes security. Where else can you register every graded coin you own (NGC/PCGS)? They let me do it for free......yes free! If everything was to be gone in the morning, I could go to the NGC Registry site, log in, and download every registered coi

Upgrading is the way to go!

Why is one little number so big? Hi everyone! I am finally reaching a plateau in collecting. I started with ASEs in NGC PF 69. I added the MS set in 69. I have been very fortunate to have been able to keep up to date. A few good things, and friends, have happened in the last 8 months. I have been able to add a set or two in PF 70. I have been lucky(with help) to complete my "W"eird 30 coin quarter set and start another. Now I have reached a plateau. I have some nice sets. The older

Data backup storage -- update (particularly for today, 3/24/2009)

Not trying to sell, but in case anyone is interested... As a follow up to my previous entry about safes, safe deposit boxes, insurance and data retention, I included information about if you store your data on a computer, the importance of backing up that data in some way, CD, external hard drive, or what-have-you. I mean, if you have an inventory of your coins for insurance purposes, in the event of a loss, it doesn't do much good if: 1. The computer crashes 2. The computer is stolen a

Who Says Registered Mail is Slow?

From Texas to Florida in a weekend. Wow! Whenever I talk to people about registered mail I get this speech about "it's slower than other forms of mail because it's tracked so carefully but it's much more secure." I get that, but how slow is it really? My latest submission was given over to USPS at our local post office on Friday afternoon (3/20). I checked today and apparently NGC has received it! I did a double take when I saw that. Interestingly enough, this submission was received exactly 2
