Coin Photography Workshop

Great Salt Lake City Area....FREE!!! CEASE FIRE!!! Enough of the hostilities already. I say this because I already had my shot and it gets boring after much more than that. On a lighter side.... I will be hosting/conducting a small coin photograpy workshop that is open to the public and free of charge. This will take place at the Davis County Library, North branch in Clearfield, Utah. This saturday, July 26 from 4pm until 6pm. I realize not everyone has access to a digital camera, or

My apologies for two posts in the same day!

But I just cannot be silent. I, myself have a small proof Ike set in the registry. By its very nature the set is small, only 11 coins. My set is currently ranked number 7 and over these past couple of years I have worked very hard to get to that number seven spot. If Mr. PK thinks he can do better... I invite him to try. I must say that I did not need anybody to push me along. Frankly, as a big burley trucker, I would feel like "pushing" someone's face into the ground if they said "buy som

It Doesn't Get Any Better....

...Than Coins on Coins. We all love coins. Most likely one of the main reasons you are on this forum, reading this journal entry. We love these little metal rounds (most are round and metal, though I have seen coins shaped like a guitar, which is really wierd) because there are so many topics celebrated in the minting of these treasures. Cats, dogs, horses, flowers, olympics, presidents, whatever your particular interest might be. So, what is better than collecting insects on coins? How abou

Independence Day

Liberty and Justice for ALL!! We Americans or more specifically the citizens of the United States of America have more blessings than anyone on Earth. You can thank God (as I do) or Allah or your lucky stars for those blessings but no matter who you thank, we have them. We can whine (with a little cheese) about rising gas prices and the like, or falling home prices ect, but you know... we are lucky. we HAVE gas to buy, we HAVE a home to live in, we HAVE all that we could want or need. We hav

Buy the Coin, Not the Holder!

I know, it doesn't make sense on this forum, BUT.... I think you'd be better off though. Any coin, or any collectible for that matter, is only "worth" what somebody else is willing to pay for it. I might say my coin is worth 500 bucks, but if the highest bid I can get is only 300, well... I guess it is only worth 300!! I would respectfully suggest that you don't buy coins strictly on a "points assigned" basis. We all know how subjective grading can be and it is simply insane to think that

I Like Ike

This bad boy put me in number 7 for Proof Ikes. I received this Ike in todays mail. He replaces a mere Proof 69UC, as this is a Proof 69UC STAR!! I think we could use a 5-Star General today. I cannot afford the thousands of dollars for Proof 70's, so I will settle on getting these 69ucSTAR's whenever I can find them. Hope you all have a great Memorial Day and remember the reason for this season. Respectfully, Michael Cooper oh...p.s. The coin itself is in the mint OGP with the NGC

Going up in the Ike's

Soon to be number 7 in Proof Ikes My Proof Ikes have been tied for 8th place for some time. I have all 11 coins, all in Proof 69 Ultra Cameo. To go up from here starts to get a bit spendy, as I will need to replace coins in this set with PF69UC STAR or the ultra spendy Proof 70UC. Last night I was very fortunate to accquire, through Ebay, a 1974-S Silver Ike, Proof 69UC STAR...yeah!! What's better, is that I got it for considerably less than I was prepared to spend. The last one I saw o

Viva Liberte!!

Did the french title grab you? I probably mis-spelled it. Part 3 of my Liberty postings. Liberty is something most of us seem to take for granted, yet there are well over a billion (1,000,000,000) people on this ball of dust who do not have that luxury. The luxury of speaking one's mind without being incarcerated (ooo a 12 letter word...just showing off my vocabulary now), the luxury of attending a house of worship, even the luxury of having more than one child (though you gotta pay for 'em a

Another really nice silver Crown

Japan 1906 1 Yen As I mentioned in another post, I am refocusing my collection towards silver world crowns. I am trying to get them in NGC slabs when I can afford, but as most of you will attest... easier said than done. If I can get a really nice crown, raw, for a decent price I will jump. Now... I know what some of you are thinking... a sucker and his money are soon parted, but not this time. I have several people that I do business with on a regular basis, and when dealing with people

Liberty...Part Two

Many have died for this cause, and not just Americans... Back in February I posted an entry on Liberty. I mentioned that we (the United States) do not have a monopoly on the freedoms of Liberty, and I posted a picture of a very nice 1921 Mexican 2 peso coin. Many have fought and many have died for the cause of Liberty in and for their country. I truly believe that Lady Liberty honors all those who gave and especially those who gave all. Every time a coin with Liberty is spent, or held and

Look what I found!!

A key date Lincoln. Only 1.8 million struck... I was going through some coins that I believed to be mostly junk, when lo-&-behold, I found this sleeper. This is a 1909-S Lincoln cent. VF+. A little soft on the obverse. Reverse is better. A pretty nice coin. I just wonder how long I have had it and didn't know. I must have been blonde in a previous life. Not trying to dis blondes... I just know that when each of my nine kids had blonde hair, they were a bit scattered brained. HEY WAIT!!

Ebay never ceases to amaze me...

...As to what will sell and what won't. A couple of weeks ago I listed several coins housed in NGC holders. Several were MS70 or PF70, all nice coins to be sure. Most of the coins barely sold for the cost of grading, and for the most part, I guess I can expect that, especially with modern coins. This week, I have 13 coins listed, all raw. The auctions end in about an hour from now, and to my surprise, several of these coins are actually bid at the listed value. WOW!! One example is an 18

I must have stepped off the planet....

Because I certainly must have missed SOMETHING.... SRL made a post earlier today saying he was, basically, going to go to an all PCGS coin set, with one minor exception, and further went on to mention coins he is in need off for his registry set. Those coins needing to be in PCGS slabs... so what did I miss here?? Is this not the NGC registry? While I commend NGC for allowing PCGS slabbed coins into their registry, I firmly believe there should be at least SOME NGC graded coins in the sets

We do not have a monopoly on "Liberty"

Nor do we have a monopoly on "The United States" Lady Liberty is featured on the coins of several countries. The first one we naturally think of is the United States...with the Statue of Liberty being foremost in our minds. The new Presidential Dollars, which all feature this grand Lady on the reverse, is a symbol of the things we hold dear and true. But where did this grand Lady come from? France! As a gift celebrating our independence. France has had her own version of Liberty for many year

Buy Some...Sell Some... Doing the Shuffle.

But in the process, I dropped like a rock... but that's ok. To collectors of every stripe comes the time when you take stock of what you have. What you have accquired versus the direction you would like your collection to go. And not just your collection either. We all do this in every aspect of our life. Our job, relationships, social standing even our car..everything. So that is what I found myself doing this weekend. I examined all my coins. I have a large safe to keep them in, so frid

Messages Disappear....Bummer

We may not like it when a post disappears... but it is, afterall, NGC's board!! This comes from a guy who has, himself, had posts mysteriously disappear. Guess there wasn't much mystery... NGC didn't like what I said and POOF no more post! Thats the chance I take when I post a messgae.... you do the same. So... what would make a post disappear? If enough people find a post offensive and complain, the post will be sent into the twilight zone. If the post is not numismatically related, it sh

Drum Roll Please.....

The winner is..... Thank you to those who played... I have copied the winning answers from "Coin Collectors' Handbook", c.1971, page 10. Only 1 person answered both parts correctly. Congrats to Revenant. Please shoot me your snail-mail address and the (not-so) grand prize will be on the way. It was a fun way to close out 2007. Regards to all.. Michael W. Cooper

End of 2007 Trivia Contest

Win a CASH prize!! I wanted to finish off this year with a little fun, so here goes... first the rules... 1. I make the rules. Rules are subject to change at any time for any reason. 2. Winner will probably be selected at random from all correct responses. Winner could also be selected by my Ouiji Board, who knows. 3. If this does not seem fair... DONT PLAY! Before I get into the details of this contest, a CS friend of mine earlier this year posted a contest, and I just loved the rul

Shouting will do no good!!

Learn!! Educate yourself...then you can make wise coin collecting choices!! The only good shouting will do is perhaps relieve a bit of the frustration you might be feeling at the moment you realize the coin you bought was indeed cleaned or that MS63 is really an AU50. It happens alot and the sad thing is... it doesn't have to. We must all realize that when buying raw coins on the net, you are basically buying that coin sight unseen. Yes, the seller will have a picture posted but what good i

Dedicated to Bammer

A good collecting friend and a great writer... Cannot say much more than that. Bammer has mentioned his interest in Mexican coins and notes. As I was going through my currency collection, I came across this and thought of my friend. This note is crisp uncirculated, series 1915 State of Chihuahua. Ten Pesos. Reverse has two red over-prints. Bought from my favorite dealer in Salt Lake City, Ace Coins. Hope you all had a great collecting weekend. Mike

Hey... I know that guy!

At least he cleaned up before he came to my house. Jose Pavon is on quite a few coins of Mexico. Not being a student of Mexico's history, I am not sure of his roll in history. I did find a nice article about the man... quite colorful I might add. http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/history/jtuck/jtfathermorelos.html

Monarchs on Coins

4 Queens and 9 Kings would make this a killer poker hand. I guess the Kings should come first, as techically they do outrank a Queen, but ladies first. This weekend I was going through some of my coins and I was surprised to see the number of British Monarchs that have been depicted on their (The UK and the Commonwealth) coins. I am quite certain I do not have all of the differnt Monarchs or their different effigies. My collection comprises 4 Queens and 9 Kings, for a total of 13 monarchs, w

Dear Journal...I didn't know...

The ANA controls ebay coin auctions. I found this out the hard way, this week. ANA has cancelled two of my ebay auctions... and what's funny, both auctions were for the same coin!! No... I wasn't selling the same coin twice at the same time... that is unethical. I ran an auction that ANA said had a misleading title. I promptly told ANA what I thought about their organization and suggested they clean up their own house before sticking their business into mine. I revised my listing a bit, to

Doubles

Doubled Dies and Strike Doubling Dear Journal, (or anybody else) I am getting more and more into coins that exhibit doubling. It can be a doubled die, strike doubling or an RPM (repunched mintmark). While I realize that strike doubled coins do not have the same value (as defined by "worth") as true doubled dies, they are none the less fascinating. They seem to be more plentiful than one might imagine, if you have the time and patience to look. The thrill of finding one of these coins in

An HONEST Dealer...WHERE!!!

When Diogenes said "Show me an honest man", walking with his lamp... he was talking about car dealers and coin dealers! An earlier post made a reference to "some" coin dealers being on the same social level as used car dealers. There are good and bad in both, and it is up to us, the consumer, to find out which is the right dealer for us. Caveat emptor.. buyer beware!! We need to do a little research ourselves.. call the local BBB (Better Business Bureau) and see if any complaints have been re
